José Afonso was a Portuguese singer/poet/activist and one of the strongest voices against the right-wing dictatorship that ended in 1974.

Vhils STREET ART, by gbr1 on Mar 31, 2019 18:36:43 GMT 1, Vhils has done an amazing piece on the frontage of what was the old Gold pub at the top of Portobello road. Its being refurbished and due to open this year. One of the owners is Ed Sheeran as its one of his old drinking haunts. Kensington and Chelsea council want the piece removed which is a total crime as its really stunning when you stand and look at it. Its a real crime that councils will only recognise works by banksy as worthy of protection,all other pieces being classed as unsuitable ir vandalism. Go and see this whilst its still there,shame a petition to keep it can't be raised.

The piece hasn't been done and won't be. They were planning on doing it as part of the refurbishment of the building but when they presented the project at a council meeting people voted against it. The image you see in the article is a mock-up of the mural, it's not an actual picture. |

It's seem quite one-dimensional right now with explosives and carvings out of the wall. I get that he's unique because of the medium he composes on but I wonder how much more he can grow from that?

In my opinion an artist needs an identity and vhils chosen medium has enormous potential.
