Local Elections 2019, by Deleted on May 1, 2019 11:12:20 GMT 1, I just hope people use their vote appropriately. It is NOT about wanting to kick the Tories out of office. Neither is it about voting UKIP because you want to leave the EU. Local elections are a very different beast to general elections.

I completely agree, however that’s not how a lot of people view how politics work these days. It’s a shame as a lot of very committed local counsellors will be impacted by the wider mess raging at Westminster.

There are 343 councils in England.
They provide a wide range of services, depending on their shape and size.
These include housing, road maintenance, parking, rubbish collection, libraries, regulation of local business, leisure and cultural facilities, parks and public places, school funding and admissions, environmental health, planning, local transport and social services.
The largest local authorities are also responsible for adult social care and children's services.
Councillors are elected to sit on these councils and represent people in a specific geographical area for a fixed term of four years.

Local Elections 2019, by Deleted on May 2, 2019 12:30:01 GMT 1, It will be interesting to see the results. Will the Tories lose loads of seats over Brexit? Will Labour lose loads of seats over Brexit?

I am disenfranchised due to what I consider to be Tory run council financial incompetence. I am not at all happy about not having the opportunity to vote. No elections in Northampton as the skint council can’t afford to run them. Never heard of that happening before.

“Elections were due at all of the other councils, but because of the county council's crisis Communities Secretary James Brokenshire said polls "would involve significant costs that would be hard to justify" and they have been cancelled.”

Indeed. I only found it as I went searching for it, when wondering why I hadn’t received a polling card!

Local Elections 2019, by Deleted on May 3, 2019 12:05:54 GMT 1, The Tories suffered really badly, as expected, but surprisingly, Labour also did badly. The LibDems were the overall winners in this election which I was pleased about. It just goes to show that most people don't like extreme politics, on the left or the right.

It's the parties/politicians that say what they really think that are doing well out of Brexit, one way or the other.

They are trying too hard to please Labour Brexiters and Labour Remainers at the same time. The most interesting thing about the results is not that the Tories lost out big time but that Labour did not pick up all those Tory losses. In fact, they didn't pick up any of them!

Local Elections 2019, by rebate on May 3, 2019 13:31:58 GMT 1, Less than half the results are in so far. The sceptic in me thinks the "safer" tory gains may have been counted fast. But that dubious theory aside, there is a lot that could happen before teatime rolls round.
Tory losses at 550 now, thats a hard loss for sure, and going to get much worse and maybe top the 1000 they were predicting for the sake of later damage limitation. Not what id like to see for labour so far, but i dont think thats going to remain the case as they seem to be gaining a few now. Lib dems have picked up a lot of seats but what seems like very few councils.
Still all to play for in the second half, but its fair to say the tory fans are probably leaving the stands (complimentary corporate hospitality suites) and heading for the train.

Local Elections 2019, by Deleted on May 3, 2019 15:21:49 GMT 1, The Tories have now lost over 800 councillors. Labour have lost 85 91. In normal political times, a 800 Tory loss would equate to about 700 Labour gains. You can understand the Tory losses due to the Brexit fiasco. But what's Labour's excuse for not picking up the Tory losses?
