Banksy Raffle • Dismaland Refugee Boat, by wappinghigh on Dec 3, 2018 23:04:55 GMT 1, So what would yall do if you win the boat? While I was doing some weight calculations, the art police already expressed her concern to put up the boat in the living room... Keep it. Cheerish it. Protect it - for all humanity.

Banksy Raffle • Dismaland Refugee Boat, by Rouen Cathedral on Dec 3, 2018 23:38:29 GMT 1, When viewing this as 'art' the fact that it's raising money for a charity has to be removed. Unless you want to argue that banksy is now creating art by giving to charity and if thats the case then Bella Gladmans 'ludicrous pompousness' idea rings true again. Once again I don't see anyone criticising the fact that banksy is raising money for something he thinks is important. You are then left with the boat. At dismaland it was an art installation with direct involvement from a visitor and connected to the theme of the entire place. Remove it changes entirely. How often do we on the forum moan and complain when someone rips a street piece from the street saying the work is ruined. Now in this case and what is probably banksys purpose is that it does not matter because he's raises money. And that's fine. The critique isn't the raffle, the charity or the artist. It's the response by 'fans' and the greed and the spin to call this a banksy sculpture and an original work of art. Everyone who entered would have entered anyway even if the money was going to banksys pocket. On reflection this is the true genius of the 'work' (concept) and artist. An artist showing the true colors of the art world, the collectors greed and exposing many of his own collectors and fans without them realizing it. The concept is genius. The charity giving is noble and generous. The boat is just that... A boat that was once part of a great art installation...
Man. Everyone says I'm always and only negative of banksy and here I go praising him and I only get two likes!?!?!
😆😆😆

Banksy Raffle • Dismaland Refugee Boat, by Deleted on Dec 4, 2018 11:28:35 GMT 1, Wonder how much this weighs, probably more than a bag of plaster yet floats?...... just saying boats are made to float I just Googled this: An object will float if the gravitational (downward) force is less than the buoyancy (upward) force. So, in other words, an object will float if it weighs less than the amount of water it displaces. This explains why a rock will sink while a huge boat will float. The rock is heavy, but it displaces only a little water. Hang on a minute. Are you saying a cubic meter of water weighs more than a cubic metre of iron and steel? Surely not.

Banksy Raffle • Dismaland Refugee Boat, by h.dupa on Dec 4, 2018 11:43:27 GMT 1, Easy flip.
I think it's fair to say that the weight is somewhere between 3 and 15 kilo's. That's 12000 grams to choose from. 12000x2=24K for something that is worth quite a bit more.
Who's in?

Banksy Raffle • Dismaland Refugee Boat, by irl1 on Dec 4, 2018 14:53:26 GMT 1, Do we know the full list of materials, details, sizes? Your guess should be to the nearest gram (for example a guess of about 5 kilos could be 4800g). You can even specify milligrams if you're feeling confident. Closest guess wins the boat (the wooden plinth is not included in the weight guessing).
Competition closes 8pm GMT December 22nd 2018. At which time the boat will be weighed by specialist students from Kings College London. The winner will be notified by email. In the event of more than one correct guess the winner will be drawn by lot.
Guesses not limited per person. All money donated goes directly to supporting refugees and displaced people. The organisers reserve the right to small print etc.
Need a clue? The boat is constructed from a shop bought fibre glass hull customised with quick-cast resin figures which are foam filled and hand spray painted. Although the prize includes battery pack, that is not currently in the boat.
Boat dimensions: 90cm x 38cm x 42cm.

Fibreglass is pretty light which is why they use it on boats. And the figures are "foam filled" so they are going to be pretty light too.

Banksy Raffle • Dismaland Refugee Boat, by Fast Eddie on Dec 4, 2018 17:22:45 GMT 1, I will tell you exactly how to do this.
Calculate the volume in cm^3 of the submerged part of the boat when it is still. It is almost a rectangular prism so LxWxH of the *part under water* gets you close.
You can check the youtube videos for a sense of where the waterline is.
If you want to be precise multiply this by ~0.85-0.88 to take into account the curvature of the hull. Once you get the volume multiply it by ~1.01 for the water specific weight.
[You do not need to build the boat in a shed and crap like that.]
Subtract the weight of the batteries. Eureka.
Also Banksy remembers you to support your high school teachers and increases for secondary school education funding.

Banksy Raffle • Dismaland Refugee Boat, by doyle on Dec 4, 2018 18:22:56 GMT 1, I'd defo recommend people to come down & view this piece, its stunning and the detail shows all the hopes and fears you can imagine in those circumstances.
My next shift there is sat & Sun afternoon,if anyone is coming down & purchase items for emergency, shelter & future care. Some of the £ from sleeping bags goes to London homeless grassroots including Streets Kitchen who I volunteer with & some of you kindly donated £ for sleeping bags earlier this year for the emergency squat, thank you again.

Banksy Raffle • Dismaland Refugee Boat, by galaxy01 on Dec 5, 2018 11:45:58 GMT 1, If you look for similar sized fibreglass RC boats online, the hulls come in around the 2k mark. Then add the foam filled resin people - which may be a similar weight again as the resin is heavier than the hull but less of it. I would say circa the 4.5kg mark
But as someone said, it will be between 3kg and 15kg - I would probably stop at 10kg. leaving 7000 guesses, plenty of time to place 7000 £2 orders and get it for just £14k!
But also consider there will be about 300,000 entries if not more, so expect at least 40 people to get it right (obviously it could be 1 but statistics say about 42), then its a 1/40 chance after spending £14,000 that you will get it - making the cost accounting for the low chance about £560,000. Pass.
I put in 4 random guesses and got 1 email too btw as others said

Banksy Raffle • Dismaland Refugee Boat, by rockbeer on Dec 5, 2018 13:05:31 GMT 1, I'm with the physics prof: these estimates of 5-15kg seem wildly low to me.
A rough calculation shows the volume of water displaced by the hull is somewhere in the order of 90 x 42 x 23cm.
That's 86,940 cubic centimeters of water, which at 1g per cc is a weight of 86 kilos.
Allowing for the profile of the hull, the boat must surely weigh something in the range of 50kg, not 5.
Or am I missing something?

The boat is 48cm in height including the people. You reckon half of the boat is underwater? Those poor migrants would be sinking. Only about 6cm is under the water.
