Banksy Raffle • Dismaland Refugee Boat, by 25127096 on Dec 2, 2018 20:38:14 GMT 1, yeah thats a fair point maybe I went over the top a little, I wasn’t trying to take away from other artists generosity. It just seems like banksys sole purpose is highlighting major issues not selling artwork or prints unless for a cause. Everything I’ve seen for sale by banksy for the past few years hasn’t been to load his pockets up.

Banksy Raffle • Dismaland Refugee Boat, by JW on Dec 2, 2018 20:39:55 GMT 1, It's not a question of whether he actually made it with his own hands or not. It's a question of whether it is a work of art or not. I think the answer is 'no'. It's just a piece of memorabilia from Dismaland.
memorabilia /ˌmɛm(ə)rəˈbɪlɪə/ noun objects kept or collected because of their associations with memorable people or events.
The boats were not available for the general public to keep, nor collect at the time of the show. It was an art installation. Now part of that installation is being made available via a charity auction.
This really is the most pissy, negative forum I have ever seen. How has another admirable gesture turned into yet another thread full of pointless bickering?

Predominantly because of one person trolling. I predicted it in the fourth post of the thread. You are right, it’s a great shame. Any attention is diverted from the quality of the artwork; the kind gesture; and the good cause being supported.

To be honest, and has been said a million times, it is just as much the fault of the people engaging in the vacuous and futile exchange

Morphing the definition. So Michael Jackson's red jacket or glove isn't memrobilia? Or the Ruby slippers from wizard of Oz?

Banksy Raffle • Dismaland Refugee Boat, by eyectopus on Dec 2, 2018 22:19:28 GMT 1, Whether this is a prop, memorabilia, or an "artwork" it is going to look excellent when displayed.
Artwork can be a prop and/or memorabilia in some cases. I see as this an artwork that was part of a larger art installation, but it still holds even without the rest of the installation. It was interactive art that is very memorable and makes a strong point and the boat is the item that people remember.
If compared with the Hirst Beachball installation, I see the Ball and Knives as props if shown individually and not artworks. I can't say the same for the boat. I do see the cliffs at the back of the exhibit as a prop, but still very important in the overall piece.
Regarding props, They are physically part of something and the time and place so to me they can be as important as artwork. There is something special about an item that people saw, interacted with and remembered years afterwards.

How has another admirable gesture turned into yet another thread full of pointless bickering? I think you're still missing the point. It's not about "admirable gestures", it's about whether it is 'art' or 'memorabilia'. Your definition of the word 'memorabilia' seems to corroborate what I have been saying, i.e. that this boat thing is a piece of memorabilia not an artwork. In fact, I think Banksy himself would agree with me. AFAIK this is not signed by Banksy, neither has it been called a piece of art by Banksy.

Are they not considered art?
He calls the Cinderella piece "art" in this interview. Why is this different to the Boat piece?
"I’m at a point with art where I only really care if the piece is more than the sum of its parts. I’m lucky because what I make either succeeds or fails. Some people undoubtedly would tell you that’s why it’s crap art, but that’s the way it is. I feel sorry for Abstract Expressionists—how do they know when to go home?
All I need is to make my point and get something more out of it than what I put in. If something extra has happened between the idea and realizing it, that’s a win. This week I surrounded my Cinderella’s carriage with a ring of paparazzi, and the flash bulbs made the shadows leap around the room, and the pumpkin looked like it was lit by flickering candles, so I’m good. I never saw that coming.
My satisfaction level is independent of your opinion. If I feel a piece has worked, there’s nothing you can say that will take that away. And the flip side is, if I know it’s failed, there’s nothing you can say that would make it OK."
www.juxtapoz.com/news/october-2015-banksy-s-dismaland-exclusive-interview/
And more: "The art market certainly doesn’t encourage creativity. Like most markets it rewards being able to reliably deliver recognisable product on a regular basis. Which isn’t necessarily a recipe for exciting art. I heard someone on the radio, it might even have been Richard Ashcroft, say: “It’s not art unless it has the potential to be a disaster.” Which is why I’ve spent months making distorted fibreglass fairground sculptures to install in a dirty lido miles from anywhere."

I just don't understand the need for the same few people to piss and moan every time banksy does something. It's going to raise a fortune for charity, who really cares if he didn't cast/paint/sculpt it himself ?

Anyone questioning this, even because they are lonely trolls needs to have a look at themselves. I don't think anyone has questioned the ethics of this piece or that it is going to raise lots of money for charity. But perhaps I've missed a post or two along the way. Who mentioned ethics ? I just don't understand the need for the same few people to piss and moan every time banksy does something. It's going to raise a fortune for charity, who really cares if he didn't cast/paint/sculpt it himself ?

I am simply saying that people who think this is a genuine piece of Banksy art are misguided. Even Banksy himself doesn't refer to it as a piece of Banksy art. But yes, it's great that it's raising so much money for charity, I agree.
