Magnum Square Print Sale Password?, by gd79 on Oct 29, 2018 9:42:35 GMT 1, The Todd Hido is perfect. This sale works best when the images are strong representations of the artist's style
I am disappointed by the Nan Goldin. I was hoping for something more iconic.
I can see 3-4 I will buy, with the Hido first on the list.

Magnum Square Print Sale Password?, by gd79 on Oct 29, 2018 10:13:59 GMT 1, Is it worth buying these with their framing options?
Their framing options are consistent, which helps when you put a few together (which you kind of need to do as they are small). It's also good to receive things ready to display or they may sit in the queue.
However, it adds to shipping costs. Outside of the US it can also layer on additional customs charges (this stung me once). I am able to get them framed locally for less even before these extra charges.
Also, I dislike that their framing options block off the signature on the back, which comes together with a little description. A local framer can do a cut out. There was something about the way they were mounted I didn't like as well. I can't remember what, will have a look.
I will buy unframed for sure.

It is tempting to get it pre-framed as it can then go straight on the wall but hidden / covered signature didn't really sit with me!
Thanks for your advice - i'll go for unframed on the Hido

I bought a Martin Parr last year. My framer left the back completely visible by using and acid free mount front and back and then using Perspex instead of the usual back board. Works well I think.

Love that frame with the seethrough backing. May I ask you how much you paid for that?

I think it was about £40-£50. I asked the framer to keep the top and bottom edges of the print larger than the side ones, to give it a poloroid feel, as that’s how the photograph was. This also meant that, as the photo is quite thin, I was able to instruct him to use photo corners and no tape whatsoever.

It looks much better than the frames that Magnum is selling, and it's even cheaper :-)

Magnum Square Print Sale Password?, by jp on Oct 29, 2018 17:37:09 GMT 1, Anyone care to share what they went for? There are a lot of good prints in this sale (better than the last few sales I would say).
I limited myself to 2 in the pre-sale and picked up the Steve McCurry and the Trent Parke. I believe I have both of these images already in monographs from these artists, but it's nice to have something to display.
I will go back for sure for the David Hurn Beatles pic, as it's an iconic pic and an auction house staple. I'm surprised he put this one in actually. Also, the Jonas Bendiksen pic is great, reminds me of a Rembrandt painting with the light.
Others that I like, but will probably not buy, include the David Seymour Picasso pic, and the René Burri pic, which is probably one of his top 5 best known images.
Again, a great selection of prints.

Magnum Square Print Sale Password?, by gd79 on Oct 30, 2018 9:55:21 GMT 1, I'll probably wait until the death to decide for good.
Right now, I would go with
Todd Hido Antoine D'Agata Wayne Miller (Mrs GD79 choice)
Gruyaert, Capa (an image that needs to be seen), Opie, Davidson, bischof are close to edging into the frame. I also think the sobekwa would work really well given the depth of colour when these things are printed.
On the framing issue, magnum crops the mount to the image. I don't like this, and framed mine in the 'polaroid' style a la coach. As the image sizes differ for every print I think this works much better when you have a few.
