Advise

Tell your friend to take it to a restorer, get it taken out the frame. Have the condition looked over. If it's been framed since then it's a good chance that non conservation materials were used. If black mounts were used then this has prob dis coloured the paper. Not many people realise this, but no matter what grade a black mount is over time it will discolour paper. I've learnt the hard way and I'm sure there are many people unaware.

Lastly I'd take the print to be reframed at John jones. Expensive yes but when your dealing with a print like this, it's worth every penny.

Choice of frame....as everything I frame now. All white - white Matt frame, white filler, raised and floated with white backing, 1.5" border.

Taking Balboa's point - I'm going to wait to see a) photos of the print and b) whether he is interested in selling before I post any more. Thanks to everyone who has passed on advise.

The reason I wanted to check that I had the correct pest control site is because the online form asks for a lot of info that basically if it got in the wrong hands would line you up perfectly for burglars. It doesn't look like it would be a difficult site to copy.

I would say though that "trolling of the highest order" is a bit harsh, have you seen the 13 page LIITA thread!

Yeah, come on, this is the real world, stop going by very recent sale prices. Let's just assume the prices are up loads.

Last auction results (especially at Forum Auction) were poor because the print status were very poor.
My intent is not to up-load prices (they will go up by them-self!), just report information available to everybody here and thruough reputable galleries.

Thanks DiveJedi. I lost track of Banksy's once the cheapest unsigned went out of my price range.

I've also never sold any art via a gallery. My partner has sold her own work via galleries and they have taken anywhere from 20%-50%. I couldn't believe someone would be paying 50% commission on a £80k Banksy print but I wouldn't know for sure.

Unfortunately things didn't work out. Although we had already agreed a cash price and a bank transfer by phone, the buyer who turned up (from a gallery, as we were already aware) told us part way through the deal this afternoon that his management were now only prepared to take on consignment. So we've said no, and after lots of phone calls between him and the gallery, and attempts to persuade us otherwise for combinations of cash and consignment (for both this GWB and two Rats I was also discussing with them) he has left empty handed. Most unimpressed.

I feel sorry for you this sale is dragging on, I thought this would be snapped up (even with the edge UV damage).

In 10 years time when even fewer are on the market the condition wont overly affect the price as much, people will just want a Banksy (I say this as the owner of a not perfect Banksy but I would say im right), its not as if a flood of Banksy will suddenly appear in 10years time).

Sales are becoming sparser and sparser of all Prints, the signed bring a premium but once they become less and less the unsigned will be commanding even higher prices.

If this GWB was mine, and I didnt need to sell I would hold onto it for a little while longer. But if its got to go dont bail at a low ball figure (id love to know what the galleries offered).

who is the gallery ? would be good to name and shame so other forum members dont waste their time with them........

The supposed advantage of dealing with a gallery is that compared to some regular folk who might mess you around or go silent after making offers etc, is that you get a professional, straight-forward and quick deal.

The accepted downside is that you might get a bit less than from a private buyer as the gallery needs to make their cut.

Galleries should be very careful about holding onto that reputation - it is their USP. If a gallery agrees a deal then tries to change it when collecting, they actually do damage to the reputation of not only their gallery, but galleries in general, once people start thinking they are as likely to get messed about by a gallery as anyone else.

Spirit totally agreed ... but in this day and age there are people 'Playing' at been Galleries and this will / may have a negative affect on the decent ones out there. One bad egg shouldnt tarnish the reputation of many good long established ones.

Also agreed it would be nice to know who the gallery was and if it was indeed an established name, which I doubt it was. But I could be wrong!

Just a quick observation, whenever anything like this goes wrong, the first thing numerous people always ask is to name and shame the galleries / people who have wronged someone.. bloodletting so to speak

I appreciate why this is done, but must this always be the first thing that anyone wants..

Maybe there is a good reason / two sides to the story... and being honest, if said gallery offered up a Banksy piece that someone on a mission not to deal with said gallery wanted, would this situation really mean they wouldnt snap it up if the piece was as they wanted and at a price they wanted.. just to cut off their nose / take a stance against the gallery because they have backed out of a cash deal and asked someone to put a piece on commission

Im not judging right or wrong, but just putting a level of balance on a sale for a piece that is ' highly sought after' and yet still not selling after 6 weeks.

I also appreciate in light of recent potential possible fraud by a 5 starred forumite there is a need to all look out for each other but if the seller wanted to put the details up, im thinking he would have by now had that been his choice.

I think the most disappointing thing for me was that although we had had multiple conversations by phone and in writing about the fact that this was to be a bank transfer at the time of sale, the only paperwork he had brought referred to consignment, so actually it appears the plan was never to pay cash. We were even asked to speak to the boss on the phone who then proceeded to tell us how very important they were. I found the employee who came in person very pleasant and polite and would like to believe the apology he gave saying he had not expected his boss to change their mind mid deal, but who's to know? Anyway, other than feeling grumpy and having a wasted afternoon I'm no worse off than I was this morning and am still in possession of my GWB, Love Rat and Gangsta Rat. They're already back on the wall and I'm drinking gin. Cheers.

just to answer the two points I've quoted above:
1)the lack of sale so far is primarily down to me personally as I've had a major roof leak, ceiling collapse and associated clean up and repair work to deal with over the past 5 weeks (still ongoing), so haven't been as proactive as I has planned following up messages and offers in my spare time. I think I've now replied to everyone who contacted me, but if not I apologise as I was swamped. I received numerous offers including some above the price I agreed on for today's deal, but chose to go with this gallery as they are established with a good reputation, and I had agreed an immediate bank transfer ahead of the meeting today.
2) I'm not planning to publicly "name and shame" as I prefer to keep a more private profile and neither do I wish to enter into any public slanging match with the gallery. I am however happy to reply by PM to anyone who is considering a gallery deal and may wish to know the name. I think that's fair? 
Happy to listen to advice as always from those who know more than me.
