Retna’s weekend meltdowns, by Con Art Studio on Jul 18, 2018 12:29:56 GMT 1, Glad this thread is back on track with Retna being an asshole. Other calligraphers I'd put above Retna would be Jose Parla, Cryptik and Porkras Lampas. Don't forget El Seed and Bisco Smith

Quite tight El Seed pieces always have a great meaning in the text

Retna’s weekend meltdowns, by k2 on Jul 18, 2018 22:52:43 GMT 1, As far as 'abstract typography' goes, I'm a big fan of Scott Albrecht's work. The craftsmanship is fantastic, and the differing depths of the shapes work really well in the flesh.

Retna’s weekend meltdowns, by brycepen on Jul 19, 2018 4:16:57 GMT 1, Retna is one of those artists that managed to achieve fame and fortune despite the fact that all of his art is different variations of the same exact script. When it was still a novel concept, it was eye catching and refreshing. But after awhile it’s like an overplayed pop song. It feels tired and overrated. It doesnt help that the money and fame seem to have made him overly cocky about his creative abilities. He’s not even trying to evolve.
He clearly has a creative mind, but what is creative genius without discipline and growth?

Retna’s weekend meltdowns, by Dojo the Dog on Jul 19, 2018 15:27:21 GMT 1, Kind of surprised people still think he puts out good art. Kind if repetitive no? See other artists get much more grief for what people deem as repetitive. Bipolar disorder aside, I think his work stays fresh for some reason. He uses different color schemes and alternate ways of presenting his personal language that he created. I was always drawn to Egyptian hieroglyphics when I was younger so maybe thats why it resonates with me. There's a clean elegance to the calligraphy that's usually there. Even though I have no idea what it says, that ambiguity works especially since he barely makes sense when he's writing in English. When you compare his work to Cripta Djan, you can see how generally each RETNA work feels different, while Cripta Djans looks identical to each other and messy. P.S. Max is an intelligent, handsome man. Yes have to agree with some of what you are saying there his recent works do look very similar. His earlier insta post's showed a different style or more detailed types of work which i was hoping to see at the exhibit. I do really like the works on display but was expecting more variety in the pieces like the ones he has done for other exhibits in the past. Maybe that's still to come. Look forward to seeing what direction he goes in. SaveSave

Buy yes agreed, lots of good people working in the field. IMHO Parla is the only one who maybe comes close to Retna's talent, but I see him as more abstract then strait calligraphy.
