I am excited to have been asked to curate Chiswick Auctions first urban art sale on the 27th Mar 2018. I've seen many sales and have thought the lack of quality and poor selection of work left room for improvement. Having consigned to the larger houses myself. I found the way they estimated work left the seller at risk of poor results and selling at a price he'd rather keep the work. Also giving only 1 shipping option for work with highly inflated prices left buyers feeling unvalued and turned other potential buyers away.  

I intend to deliver a quality selection of work by working with consigners to estimate work correctly, protecting them and setting the correct price expectation for buyers who are unsure on value. We already have a strong selection of work from Banksy(10+),Harland Miller,Pejac,Invader,Shepard Fairey,Faile and STIK amongst others.

Further consignments are welcomed and should be directed to [e-mail] The consignment deadline is 22nd Feb. Sellers fees are negotiable dependant on the quality and number of consignments I will do the best I can to help Forum members get the best terms possible.  

Some details for potential consigners to be aware of:

Number of Sales per year across all Depts 170+
Number of departments 20+
Client/consigners funds held in segregated accounts.
Locations 2 Chiswick and South Kensington. 
This sale will be listed on Artsy,The Saleroom and Invaluable combined audience of over 2m collectors 
Consigners paid 30 days after the auction.
Work can be collected in person/in house shipping/your own courier.

For transparency I have consigned work to the sale myself. Hopefully this shows I have faith in both my ability to deliver an interesting selection of work and Chiswick's ability to deliver strong results. I'm very aware of the numerous people who have had bad experiences with Paddle8 and other houses so will do my best to answer any and all queries. I have only sold once at auction and it was with paddle8 and i never got paid (as detailed in another thread). I do not know much about ‘chiswick auctions’ so will take a look.

Will there be hidden reserve prices?

Reserve prices cannot be above the low estimate so use that as a guide. Some may be a little lower than the lower estimate and some won’t have a reserve as the sellers are happy to take what they get.

We have a strong selection of work. Our intention is to have an open viewing period at their South Kensington branch 2-3 weeks before then a VIP event on the actual night of the auction. Consigners will be invited to be present, that night will be invitation only. Any further questions pls ask

no offence but estimates are all over the place and the catalogue includes some dubious "gifts" and non certified Banksy works which for me makes the auction lose credibility.

Got to agree there are some really nice things in there, but the decision to take non certifiable works is a really confusing one to me.

Banksy ephemera items are widely sold across the market. We will not be accepting street pieces. All lots come with provenance and buyers can satisfy themselves as to the strength of it and bid accordingly.

I have worked with consigners to bring reserves/estimates that are a guide for people who are unaware of values so they don’t have to pay 3x 4x a top estimate to buy work. Ultimately if the sellers expectations are not met the work will not sell and be returned.

Whatever the pass rate I will be confident that I’ve looked after 100% of the consigners which will enable me to bring a strong selection of work going forward.

Condition reports on all lots are available from Chiswick. I appreciate you cannot please everyone but I’ve done my best to produce something I think is interesting.

Personally, I don't think you are doing yourself or your clients any favours by not attracting the buyers.  I was interested in going along to have a bid or two but have lost interest now.

There is a lot to be said for having low estimates.  For example:

This piece cleared 3x the top estimate!

Just my view of course, and I do hope that the sale is very successful despite my own reservations.

As someone who has consigned to bigger houses the risk has often felt too great with unrealistically low estimates and little protection. For every person that walks away from a lot based on a high estimate there are others who are unwilling to pay multiple times unrealistically low estimates.

I appreciate a buyers point of view estimates are high I’m not going to be able to pick up a bargain. If the lot doesn’t sell you’re welcome to approach the auction house after. It’s also worth noting that there are numerous lots where the reserve is under the low estimate so I’d encourage anyone interested to register and bid what they’re happy to pay.

The sale will go live on Artsy on Tuesday so any bids placed there will be viewable publicly as with The saleroom and Invaluable.

Yes all have been individually photographed by Chiswick
There are no stock photos and the resolution should be high enough to get a good idea on condition in addition to the condition reports.

If you’re interested in something in particular feel free to msg me and I’ll inspect it personally and give you my honest opinion.
