Not a fan of this one, so it's an easy pass as well. As a few people just said, this one doesn't have the same feel and details of his last two print releases. Also this is apparently a giclee and not a screenprint...sigh

Its because of the flipping too, his stuff flips quick initially but like Obey too many hit the bay. Don't know why artists keep doing these pop up stores, most of those dudes inline are just flipping.

At $400 for the giclee, it will take a while. If it was one of of his hand embellished it would go quickly.  Some of those have flipped for a lot which indicates his following is large enough to warrant some higher prices but there does seem to be a lot of flippers of his work vs audience willing to pay for the giclees.  

He's also putting out a new vinyl soon so a new print might be coming with that too.  Looney Toons themed as well.

Yea the original price from the gallery was $240 for the HE of Nuclear Family. If I remember right, I paid the same for the HE of his Dragonball Z print. Now the REGULAR version of these prints go for $500 or so. His market is definitely growing and his popularity is gaining a lot of traction over in HK/China. Gondek, Jerkface, and KAWS really hit it big with the Asian markets since their work revolves around artistic renditions of internationally known pop culture characters. Would not be surprised to see prices continue to rise in the way Jerkface has jumped.

This artist personally doesn't do anything for me. I don't think his work will ever grow to the likes of KAWS. KAWS originals/prints and even the companions are displayable in blue chip homes down to an average apartment. I don't think something of this medium will ever make it to blue chip status or even be widely collected. Just my opinion though, not for me.

It may be due to his lack of "Street" or "Urban" art. Participating in group shows with Street Artists has put him in this realm, but he's really a digital artist who transitioned to painting (a statement he makes himself in an interview.)

I'm not making any critiques on his work, as we all should realize that art is Subjective, but I'm just making the case for why he may not have his own dedicated Forum "Thread".

For those that don’t know you, what’s the Matt Gondek origin story?

I’ve always wanted to be an artist. My art career started about 10 years ago when I began getting hired to do shirt illustrations for bands. I did that for about seven years as a freelancer.. Did well for myself but hated sitting on the computer all day. Never going outside.

How did you begin to make the transition from fine art to street art and murals?

I began painting about three years ago on a whim. Never really did it before. I started out solely doing canvas work with maybe One or Two murals done with Brush Paint. This is back when I lived in Pittsburgh..

When I moved to California, I realized it was much too nice out to sit inside painting all the time, so I started ramping up my mural work and began teaching myself how to use aerosol.

My first murals were all brush paint.. then a combination of brush and can.. recently they’ve been all spraypaint.

This guy has done a lot of murals in the last few years, so he definitely falls under the "street" art definition. Just look up "Matt Gondek Mural" on google images and you'll see he's done many.

I didn't state that he would be a megastar or a blue chip artist like KAWS. I definitely agree with you that he likely won't. But it's pretty clear he will have a solid following and could easily push prices like jerkface, especially internationally, due to his appealing pop art and style amongst an ever increasingly affluent Asian market.

I think people here love themselves too much. There's a HUGE group of young art fans that will never develop, nor want to develop a high dollar taste in art, and just want to enjoy their walls

I know atleast 20 guys that buy and love every Gondek release. Not Because it's going to be worth thousands in the future, because they genuinely love having it around

Art is evolving. It's not all stuffy museum pieces anymore. Fun pieces can hold value as well guys. Hate to break it to u
