Maybe I'm just getting old but prices (of most thing talked about in here) are insane(and that includes STIK,Invader and dare I say Banksy). Then again, what do I know?

Jerkface 🇺🇸 New York Artist • New Release • Art For Sale, by pr.yu on Sept 18, 2017 3:29:42 GMT 1, The price might be on the high side, but one of the common complaints on this board is of flippers turning a quick profit. Here's an artist who's selling his work at about the price his stuff is getting on the secondary market. This way, more money ends up in the artist's pocket, which is fine by me. If these were there for $150, I bet they'd sell out immediately, go up on eBay for $500 and sell for $350.

To be fair I quite liked the normal edition but I didn't like it enough to pay that much, but I do think a fan would as it's not that much in comparison to a lot of stuff, from less established artists, sell for on release. The variants are worse IMO and are on the too high side of reasonable.

What's the problem with giclee? Most of the Herakut prints are Giclees and look stunning in the flesh. Would you say that Giclee prints are low quality per se? (honest question)

In effect it's an inkjet print. Quality can be good. Take some of the Laz varnished ones for example. But they don't have the same human touch as a hand pulled screen print, which takes a skilled printer to get right, in conjunction with the artist. That's my understanding.

These images consist of flat colours with clean transitions and no gradients. There is no excuse not to screenprint them, other than laziness.
Beyond that, the artist is a hack and this is terrible.

I wouldn't necessarily put it that way, but I do struggle to find this work aesthetically pleasing. It looks a little like the wrapping paper one might use to wrap a child's birthday present. Lots of basic repeated images in bright colours. Each to their own I suppose. I am very happy to listen to a constructive discussion as to the merits of this work.

(honest question) Personal preference but Can't get it out of my head that it's a poster and can't justify $350 for a poster. Appreciate that a lot of work can go in to creating the image prior to printing but I appreciate the work that goes in to a screenprint. I also own a jerk face screen print and like his work but not this one.

phischa I think @hammerz sums up my feelings exactly, I find myself less likely to pay bigger numbers on items that were spat out of an Indigo Press no matter how nice it is. The manual nature of a screen print could be the limiting factor in a small release but when you can just "send 500" to the press it's an easily repeatable thing. The artifice of the screen is never involved. The color swap is just a photoshop palette swap not ink swaps on screens. That doesn't mean I won't buy Giclees just that if I was on the fence that could sway me.

Lots of basic repeated images in bright colours. Each to their own I suppose. I am very happy to listen to a constructive discussion as to the merits of this work. I am not a buyer at this price considering all the elements of image, size and production manner. But to try to answer some of your question... I think his work is clearly rooted in nostalgia, and then manipulated into repetitive and perhaps subversive imagery. Only he can speak to what all that means, perhaps how we ourselves manipulate our own childhood memories as we grow older? I am not sure.
I might be alone in feeling this way, but I draw some parallels between Jerkface and Invader. Invader is an artist whose imagery is also rich in nostalgia, and who also can be subject to similar critiques like: "Why is the price of his work so much for what is often a mosaic copy of the Space Invaders game character I played as a kid?" Or "why does a rehash of the CareBears cost $350?"
Like Invader, I think the best of Jerkface's work is in the streets too. Jerkface is clearly earlier in his career, and I'm not trying to equate him to Invader's impact on the street art movement - where Invader is one of the pioneers. But Jerkface's work on walls is impressive. And if you've ever seen him working, you realize quite quickly how skilled of an artist he really is. He's incredibly fast, steady and detailed.

Agree wholeheartedly -- Mickey, Calvin and Hobbes, TMNT, Simpsons all very nostalgic and similar to the old arcade video game themes from Invader. It's not like most of Invader's work moves me to think in the way that Banksy or Pejac do.

What im not into though is the pricing of prints, i cant afford to buy most of these prints nowadays they all see too expensive.

I was having the same thought about prices myself. Even a few years ago I don't remember seeing so many prints being released for over/around £1k, or even so many at £500+.
I have a lot of respect for Graffiti Print, Souled Out Studios and the efforts they put in to keep their prints affordable without compromising on quality.
Gonna have to make more effort to find more up and coming artists that I like and buy when they are affordable.
