Banksy, The Alternativity @ Walled Off Hotel, by nex on Dec 5, 2017 23:42:43 GMT 1, I’m shocked no one is talking about these new works. Quite weird honestly.
I’ll rewrite this for you
‘Hi all
Thanks for starting this thread, previous discussion on these pieces started in the sale ends / walled off threads but being mainly threads discussing the ‘value of things’ quickly got lost.
So yes, let’s discuss. I’ll start, the Cherubs piece is one of the best he’s done in a while, playful, serious, pointed at that wall, at religion tearing down barriers (?) .... and all the while placed high up on a f**kingbig patrolled wall!
Merry Christmas x’

Banksy, The Alternativity @ Walled Off Hotel, by Rouen Cathedral on Dec 5, 2017 23:50:46 GMT 1, You know the ones that go around remincient of the good old early days on the forum. OG = Original. Rightio. In what way are they self proclaimed?
Edit:
‘Hi coach
Good question and what you’ve pointed out (after some much needed self reflection) is that I tend to make statements to gain attention and draw ppl into needless arguments which do not end.
I’ve decided moving forward that I will furnish my statements with evidence or at the very least reasoned thought for my statement. I’m here to learn and to push others to question too. Perhaps if I act more positively I can affect change? One can but try.
Now returning to your point, next time an example shows up I’ll state this view.
Merry Christmas x’

Banksy, The Alternativity @ Walled Off Hotel, by Cocteau 101 on Dec 6, 2017 11:19:57 GMT 1, The cherubs piece is an excellent piece imo. Reminds me a little of the Gates of heaven piece. Meaningful, gentle and on point. all the more with the likely announcements from the US this week. Banksy has always done the kids work brilliantly, they are always inbued with a melancholic sentimentality but a strong underlying message and not delivered in a preaching overbearing manner.

Banksy, The Alternativity @ Walled Off Hotel, by Deleted on Dec 6, 2017 13:27:35 GMT 1, Howdy folks, I was out at the Walled Off for The Alternativity. Here's my little travelogue.
I arrived on Saturday to find Danny Boyle, Jaimie D Cruz (Director of B-Movie, The Antics Roadshow, co-producer on Exit Through the Gift Shop) and a very large multi camera film unit at the hotel. They have been filming at the hotel and around Palestine for the past couple of months. So I think the final documentary will be wider focused than just The Alternativity, more likely it will encompass Banksy's decade long relationship with Palestine.
Their was a run through and dress rehearsal of The Alternativity on Saturday afternoon in the car park adjacent to the Walled Off. In the evening there was some excitement as a new piece by Banksy was revealed high up on the seperation wall, opposite The Alternativity stage. It had actually been up there since late November, but had been carefully concealed with cardboard painted to match the concrete of the separation wall, and a large tattered banner. The film crew were there to capture the removal of the banner and cardboard to reveal the new piece. Amusingly earlier in the week, one of the sheets of cardboard came unstuck, revealing the head and shoulders of one of the cherubs. Hotel staff were quickly on the scene with a ladder to cover-up the piece once it was pointed out to them, and they asked those who had seen it and photographed it to not let anyone know about the pieces existence until after the Saturday night reveal.
Sunday morning I was told about a new Banksy piece that had been put up on the door of the Milk Grotto shrine close to the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. My taxi driver Ala'a drove me around to the milk grotto, and we were the first to capture images of the new "Peace on Earth" street piece. I then went off with Ala'a to visit a couple of the original street pieces Banksy put up around Bethlehem back in 2007. We then left Bethlehem to tour some of the nearby sights, the spectacular St George's Monastery at Wadi Qelt, Jericho (both the lowest place on earth and the longest continually inhabited city on earth), the Jordan River (where Jesus was baptised), the Dead Sea and finally back to Bethlehem to see Manger Square and the newly switched on lights. (I highly recommend using Ala'a as a taxi / tour guide if you are visiting the Walled Off, he's a lovely guy, very well informed and a trusted partner of The Walled Off).
www.instagram.com/alaa_taxi_driver_bethlehem/
Back at the Walled Off car park final preparations were being made for The Alternativity as the sun began to set. Crowds began to gather, and everyone who entered the car park was given an A5 4 page Alternativity program created by Banksy, which aped both Israeli ID cards and Christmas cards, depending which way round you held it. A little after the advertised start time of 5pm The Alternativity was under way with an audience made up of a mix of local families with their children, residents and friends of the hotel, NGOs, journalists, and others who happened to be in the right place, at the right time.
The Alternativity cast was made up entirely of children, apart from two adult compares. The majority of the show was preformed in arabic, (not my strong suit) with smatterings of english narration and singing. So, I didn't entirely know what was going on. But, a few highlights that come to mind are the choir singing the name of Leila Khaled (an icon in Palestine, member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and the first female plane hijacker) to the tune of jingle bells:
Leila Khaled, Leila Khaled, Leilaaaaaa Khaleeeeeed. Leila Khaled, Leila Khaled, Leilaaaaaa Khaleeeeeed. Etc.
Next memorable moment was the arrival of Joseph and him being roughed up and interrogated by the IDF at a military checkpoint that had been set up at the back of the car park, purposely stalling the show, which was both funny and poignant.
Then there were (apparently) some very funny monologues from some of the children as those in the audience who understood arabic were having a good chuckle.
Next highlight and for me the best part of the show was a group of female Palestinian teenagers, who rapped defiantly in both arabic and english about their situation under occupation in Palestine.
It would not be Christmas without bad music and snow, so next up fake foam snow was sprayed up into the sky above the audience and fluttered down covering us all in foamy faux snow flakes accompanied by the Crazy Frog version of Jingle Bells...
The token bad guy was King Herod, (boo, boo!) who weaved his way through the crowd wearing a large grotesque theatrical mask.
And the finale... the appearance of Santa Clause himself... or, wait a minute... was it Banksy Clause himself giving out free gifts to the children, no not Sale Ends APs, but kinder surprises.
And then it was over... don't forget to grab some of the free food and drinks on offer at the back of the car park and Exit Through the Gift. And wonder to yourself if that massive slab of concrete that was covered over with plywood that the donkey was staring at all night has a new Banksy piece on it, that's going to be revealed at a later date...
From conversations I had afterwards, I think some of the hotel residents were little confused / disappointed with the show. It was exactly as it had been billed, an off-kilter children's nativity play. But I think some folks were expecting Elton John to burst onto stage, or for Banksy to give a speech from the hotel roof. I really enjoyed the chaos and confusion of it all. Yes, some of the radio mics cut out, and there was static feedback over the speakers, but we were essentially extras on a film set, it said as much in the program. So the show wasn't really for us, it was for the film, and I'm sure it will look and sound great on screen, once it's all been tightly edited (it was a 5+ camera set up, so they had plenty of coverage), the subtitles are included and the sound design is added in and the audio glitches are fixed in post.
Monday... Danny Boyle flew back to the UK on my flight, but the film crew stayed behind to continue filming, they were organising a drone shoot as I left the hotel... as I said to Jaimie, "I won't ask exactly what you're doing, but I'm really excited to see the results". Coming very soon to a TV screen near you.
What an epic trip. If you haven't been out to the hotel, go, and if you have, go back.

Banksy, The Alternativity @ Walled Off Hotel, by tobomoore on Dec 12, 2017 17:20:28 GMT 1, From Den of Geek - www.denofgeek.com/uk/tv/53977/the-alternativity-danny-boyle-and-banksy-team-up-for-new-film
"A new hour-long documentary will arrive this week on BBC Two that promises to put a curious spin on your typical nativity performance.
The Alternativity will see Trainspotting and Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle travel to Bethlehem to put on a perfomance of the birth of Jesus Christ in the carpark of Banksy's The Walled Off Hotel, which the legendary graffiti artist opened in March of this year. It's a fairly dangerous part of the world, under Israeli occupation and overlooked by a huge security wall. Checkpoints control roads in and out of the area. Banksy's hotel is located just down the road from Manger Square, which many believe is the place where Jesus was actually born.
After Banksy asked Boyle to come and help him put on the nativity play, it seems the director had quite the mammoth task on his hands.
Here's some further info from the Beeb:
Accepting this unorthodox request from a man he has never met, Danny admits the closest he has ever been to the Middle East is a fortnight in Majorca. Thrown in at the deep end, he travels to the occupied Palestinian territories to create a spectacular show from scratch.
Shot over six weeks, this enthralling documentary follows the action as Danny overcomes the many restrictions to assemble a cast and crew, meeting local children, theatrical performers and a great many donkeys along the way.
How will Danny tell the story of the most famous journey ever made - in a land where movement is severely restricted? Will he find a donkey? And, as if the challenge wasn’t big enough already, can he fulfil Banksy’s request to make it snow?
This sounds like it might just be a bit good. We've added it to our Christmas watchlist.
The Alternativity will air on Sunday 17th December at 9pm on BBC Two."

Banksy, The Alternativity @ Walled Off Hotel, by Gunny on Dec 13, 2017 23:14:57 GMT 1, Howdy folks, I was out at the Walled Off for The Alternativity. (I highly recommend using Ala'a as a taxi / tour guide if you are visiting the Walled Off, he's a lovely guy, very well informed and a trusted partner of The Walled Off). www.instagram.com/alaa_taxi_driver_bethlehem/Back at the Walled Off car park final preparations were being made for The Alternativity as the sun began to set. But, a few highlights that come to mind are the choir singing the name of Leila Khaled (an icon in Palestine, member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and the first female plane hijacker) to the tune of jingle bells: Leila Khaled, Leila Khaled, Leilaaaaaa Khaleeeeeed. If you haven't been out to the hotel, go, and if you have, go back. nice write up - thanks
