Tabby - Concrete Backgrounds – Custom orders, by NYart on Nov 28, 2017 1:02:18 GMT 1, It would be a bit unfortunate if he did start releasing through a gallery. While his work sells itself, he’s a great guy to deal with and makes me want to buy his work even more haha. Would be a shame to lose that. Only time I wasn’t able to land a piece of his I had my eye on was when they were sold through a gallery.

Remember that if this is the artist's only income stream, it will be the gallery that will move your big ticket items and concentrate on the marketing.
It is all about economics and sustainability. For print releases, these happen only a couple of times a year, to make them desirable. As an artist beginning their career, if you start ramping them up production, there will be an oversupply.
Only once you are established with a solid secondary market, will this work.
What Tabby makes after costs aren't enough to buy a house and live comfortably. So you have to keep that in mind.

Maybe I’m not as educated on the relationship between artist and gallery but I feel that many shouldn’t need gallery backing unless dealing with the enquiries, shipping, and sales becomes too much. Someone brought up GP in this post so using them for an example, several of their recent releases came from artists with less of a following on social media. In that regard it would seem Tabby doesn’t ‘need’ their marketing. Could they use their mailing lists to solicit higher sales prices and introduce his work to new customers? Probably but I guess ultimately it comes down to if it’s worth it to the artist? I think that his prices and total output of work is comparable to many comparable artists, if he doesn’t need or want the help of a gallery no reason to give them a cut.

Not going to spend too much time with this. It is just a calculated guess based on the last release and assuming he doesn't have any other income streams.
His last drop generated Eur 11950 before taking to account costs.
Those are the numbers. Apply this to your personal situation and ask yourself if this is enough.

All this depends on scale of the artist's ambition.

All this depends on scale of the artist's ambition. I like and respect the fact that some artist do it on their own and some do some of it on their own in addition to using galleries as well. Take Seen for instance he does it all, shows in galleries and does lot on his own and is quite successful. Additionally, Penny has done his own releases and through galleries as well. I don't think it has to be one or the other after all, and please correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Tabby have some releases through UTBNYC a few years back. I think that whatever works best for the artist at whatever time is what's best. After all, it's all up to them.

The Normandy one? That was a winner for sure. Think that was an original oil painting though? Not sure how/if he’d be able to reproduce it..

Yeah that was the one,it was oil and when I enquired about it I was told there were plans to do a small edition in the oils. Not sure if they ever came about or if TABBY is still sitting on the idea?

Yes that is an oil painting, with enough time Ill come across a good way of doing multiples. Johnnys right that I mentioned an edition in oil, turns out I cant sit still long enough to make enough so its one of many project that run in the background, possibly for years.

Tabby - Concrete Backgrounds – Custom orders, by TABBY on Nov 28, 2017 15:04:56 GMT 1, Love these but just wondering what will happen in the long term for concrete on a wood panel. Thoughts on a postcard? Lets see, personally Id love to see them crack since that would make them look even more genuine, but all tests over a few months show they stay the same. Ill mix together a different batch in the future that crack on purpose.

Ive enjoyed doing sales direct since I get to be in contact with those collecting and it lets me keep the prices lower. Nothing against galleries, they have their role and especially to save time Ill be connecting some new friendships in the future.
Also a heads up, if you wanted to get your hands on one of the concretes they are almost gone.

I know we were only able to order one but I would have probably picked up another tho out of respect for your process I just got the one. My question is when will I be able to order another one if I choose to do so?

Lets see, personally Id love to see them crack since that would make them look even more genuine, but all tests over a few months show they stay the same. Ill mix together a different batch in the future that crack on purpose. All this depends on scale of the artist's ambition. Its go big or go home, right? Good is never great enough.

Which one do you have your eyes on as a 2nd addition?

Respect for thinking about the collector.
You know your situation better than anyone else. If you feel comfortable that you are optimising your opportunities by handling your affairs by yourself, then continue.
I am just considering trajectory and plans over the next few years, and when you have less time, become stretched with projects, and do a couple of group and solo exhibitions, the quality of the support is just as important.
