Penny - "Bowie" - Newest Release, by davievegas on Sept 27, 2017 23:35:47 GMT 1, Looks like penny is stealing other artists style and calling it his own now? I know of an artist here in Las Vegas that has been doing this exact multifaced portrait style for awhile now. Starting to get a nice buzz. This reminds me of the Jagger piece that snipt made. Just a different medium. Such a laugh. Seems people steal in art like they do in music. We saw how far that got Alec Monopoly. No career anymore once he was called out.

Penny - "Bowie" - Newest Release, by davievegas on Sept 27, 2017 23:46:06 GMT 1, Exact composition of Snipts Jagger piece. Penny could of at least used a multi faced portrait that was a different composition. Guess he was too lazy or figured no one would notice the blatant style jack? His execution is even sloppy. Poor fade...harsh lines bleeding into other lines. Smh

Is it not perfectly perceivable that Penny has decided upon the image for this piece without ever seeing that piece by snipt?

You could say that if his new style was not almost spot on to another artists. Its also not far off to think penny saw a buzzing US artist and figured most Uk collectors would say the same thing. This new style is in question here. Not the image.

Is it possible? Maybe. Is is probable? No.

Penny - "Bowie" - Newest Release, by snipt on Sept 28, 2017 1:47:11 GMT 1, Hey guys! I just wanted to pop in here, as Davie Vegas gave me a heads up about this post. He has been a collector of mine for a while now, being as we are both from Las Vegas and he has been exposed to my art more than most around here. As I am sure most of you guys are saying "SNIPT? Who the hell is that guy?". Well..I don't blame you. I am US based, haven't made it out to the UK, and I haven't had the gallery exposure that most artists have.
Anyway, after looking at this image, it was a bit of a shock to see a very similar composition to one of my multifaced pieces (which was posted above). It's a style that I have been working with since early 2016, and it has really lended itself to my style of collage, photo manipulation and dรฉcollage.
As you can tell if you've seen my work, my style for most of my career has been pop culture mashups. In themselves, it's a genre that has become over-saturated, un-welcomed within the fine art market and cliche. I have been working hard to push out of that box unless it's for a street piece, for lower priced art fairs on smaller canvases, or commissioned murals. Like most artists in the street art/contemporary art scene, I've had some of my art ripped before (100% stolen) and I've found inspiration from other artists (modern artists, contemporary artists). However, I always do my best to avoid coming too close to another artist's signature style.
That being said...I am a HUGE fan of Penny. In fact, I rarely post images of my personal collection or work from other artists, but I did dedicate a post to Penny back in Feb: Love for Penny!
I know that Penny didn't intend to lift from my style. Like Coach noted, it's possible that Penny may have swiped past it a while back on Instagram and it just entered his subconscious. With the information overload of today, sometimes it's hard to know if you've come up with your own inspiration, or it's being recalled from something previously viewed.
To wrap this up unless anyone adds further discussion: It makes your heart sink a little when you are one of the "small fish" like myself in a big pond, and you come across something from an artist that you've always looked up to that closely resembles a piece that you've previously created. Penny is an innovator, and his technical skills are second to none. I wish I had half of his talent, but for now I get by on my ideas and trying to cement a signature style that is easily recognizable. For an artist in my position, the biggest fear is gaining traction with my career, and eventually hearing "Hey...Look at this work. Looks like Snipt is trying to be like Penny".
Thanks for giving what I wrote a read if you made it this far. I hope that you have a chance to check out my work one day! Also to those that picked this piece up, congrats. Obviously, I love how it came out given the composition and subject matter. Cheers!

Penny - "Bowie" - Newest Release, by Acidburn on Sept 28, 2017 12:43:26 GMT 1, Hi guys,
Just wanted to make a quicknote about the above.
Davie while I respect you looking out for other artists and Snipt hope everything works out for you but it took me 2 minutes to look back on Penny's IG from the beginning of the year when he posted the Bowie art in January which was 6 months before you posted your art on IG. I'm just going off Instagram and the post above but I couldn't find any style like that before then. And I promise, I've seen Penny's Bowie even before he posted it on IG in January.
Bowie was in the works for a long time it was just that with a show and our print release it took longer.
Again, its great that everyone is looking out for each other but sometimes things are just a coincidence.

Penny - "Bowie" - Newest Release, by purpleandred on Sept 28, 2017 13:15:33 GMT 1, I'm sorry but I just don't feel either artist can lay a claim of originality for a three sided combined portrait. The "overlap" between these pieces is incidental and hardly definitive.

I figured this would come up, but I didn't feel it was worth pointing out, as I didn't want to appear too defensive. The first thing I did before responding to this was to see when his piece was created vs. my Jagger piece. Mine was first created in August of 2016. I had't laid down the fine art version of the piece until last month, however.
The first posting on my Jagger composition
I do post quite a bit more than Penny, so finding that in my messy stream wouldn't have been as easy, if you in fact had a look around.
Cheers and keep up the great work with UTBNYC!

The first thing I did before responding to this was to see when his piece was created vs. my Jagger piece. Mine was first created in August of 2016. I had't laid down the fine art version of the piece until last month, however. The first posting on my Jagger compositionI do post quite a bit more than Penny, so finding that in my messy stream wouldn't have been as easy, if you in fact had a look around. Cheers and keep up the great work with UTBNYC!

Penny - "Bowie" - Newest Release, by snipt on Sept 28, 2017 19:07:15 GMT 1, Hey guys! In fact, I rarely post images of my personal collection or work from other artists, but I did dedicate a post to Penny back in Feb: Love for Penny!I know that Penny didn't intend to lift from my style. Cheers! What a great post of yours which clears up things from the only point of view that matters... yours ! So many haters here who are so quick to jump on conclusions ;-( Made me want to see more of your art as you clearly are much smarter than so many people here those days... Apart from Instagram, where is best place to see more of what you've created ? Thanks for the kind words! The Instagram feed for me is always the most up to date means to follow my work. It has a pretty comprehensive stream of my street work, murals, installations, art fairs and gallery shows. I do have a web store setup, which I will be updating in the next few weeks with some fresh originals.
My store can be visited here: SNIPT Shop
Aside from that, I have some works available at Cluster Walls and Redefine Gallery. I'll be exhibiting in Wynwood for Art Basel this year if you'll be in that area. I'd love to link up with anyone who makes it there!
Also, I appreciate the heads up from davievegas as he's always been there with my career as we are both Las Vegas based. He's a good dude, has a lot of passion and says what's on his mind! Like you said though, while I see a very obvious connection, it may have went down how I previously responded. Penny has always seemed like a great person, so I doubt there was malicious intent. It did feel like a gut punch though when I first saw it!

Penny - "Bowie" - Newest Release, by sparky999 on Oct 1, 2017 16:06:37 GMT 1, Well this thread is absolute trash. Yeah - Penny one of the most innovative stencil artists working today is trying to rip off some US artist nobody in the UK has ever heard of - give me a break.

Most innovative stencil artists on the planet??!?
Haha, seriously not trying to be a dick here, but "innovative" is not the first word that comes to mind.
Another piece about Bowie. So innovative. Creative genius, right?
