Bitcoin, by Sliding on the Walls on Sept 18, 2017 15:12:30 GMT 1, I thought I'd start a thread about Bitcoin and other crypto currencies, seeing as the past couple of weeks have been pretty interesting.
First of all, China's central bank banned ICOs which had an effect on Bitcoin. There were rumors China would try and ban crypto currencies all together. This caused it to drop to a 90 day low.
Last week JP Morgan's Jamie Dimon went on record saying that it is a fraud, a pyramid scheme, worse than tulip bulbs and will blow up.
There are rumors that JP Morgan have since invested a lot into bitcoin, implying the statements were released in the hope of lowering its value in order to buy in at a low price.
Today, Bitcoin has surged to over $4,000 but it is still off the $4,522 all time high.
What are people's thoughts?
Do you have any stories, any crypto currencies you think might follow in Bitcoin's footsteps? Perhaps this thread could be the place to share information.
I know there is another thread called 'If you had $10,000 to spend' which kind of turned into a thread about bitcoin etc... but I didn't want to keep hi-jacking that thread and I apologize if there is already a crypto thread which I have overlooked.

Bitcoin, by kharupt on Sept 18, 2017 15:26:08 GMT 1, I feel like all of this bad press is to lower btc's price. When low enough those institutions buys in bulk like JP Morgan. A bit like the anti hype in this forum.
Bitcoin's all time high is actually $4,928. I'd keep an eye out for litecoin and ethereum. I have NEM and OMG. They look to be solid altcoins.

Bitcoin, by RoboJ on Sept 18, 2017 21:31:22 GMT 1, Crypto has taken a hammering which is odd because the whole point of it being decentralised was so decision such as the one China just made are supposed to have no effect. This just shows that those with Bitcoin are largely made up of mainstream investors now rather than those who believe in the fundamentals of Bitcoin. I have a small amount of ethereum. If you think the price of a banksy jumps quick, try crypto! Although it plummets just as fast too haha

Bitcoin went over $5,000.
Jamie Dimon should be locked up.

If you think the price of a banksy jumps quick, try crypto! Although it plummets just as fast too haha Yes so very odd that the price dropped, it's almost as if market makers used news to drive price down after millions of uninformed investors FOMO bought BTC. In a market with fixed supply, rapid increases in demand drive price exponentially higher. This momentum can not be maintained indefinitely and so as demand wains price falls. The time to buy BTC for this cycle was over a year ago, the risk reward right now is appalling over medium timeframes. 99% of BTC trades have happened under $1300 if you are investing money now then you are at best trying to catch the tail end of a bull run and you will get REKT.
That's a lovely chart. I enjoyed your peice on the Bitcoin cycle. Are you suggesting Bitcoin is not in its infancy in terms of global adoption?
Why would anybody be trying to catch the tail end of a bull run? Unless they were selling. And at best!?

It would be interesting to see if the hype that you quite rightly mention is as large as you may think. I was talking to a casino manager last week and I asked if they had considered accepting Bitcoin as a form of payment, he didn't know what I was talking about.
We may find that the wave which you mention is merely a ripple right now.

Why would anybody be trying to catch the tail end of a bull run? Unless they were selling. And at best!? No that's actually exactly what I'm suggesting. People's expectations are way ahead of reality at the moment. People are buying bitcoin with no real understanding of what they are buying, why they are buying it, or with any time frame context to the investment. They are buying it because they heard their friends made money. They are buying hype. Bitcoin (with a capital B) is a protocol, it's a technology. A really f**kingbeautiful technology at that. Tech adoption comes in waves. We are in a wave right now, this wave may keep going higher or it may crash back down without making a new high over $5k. My point is you buy at the bottom of the wave not near or at the top of it - that's where you sell.
No sh#t sherlock regarding your "waves". I wish "people" knew that you are supposed to buy when it's low and not when it's high. But people are so stupid aren't they? Buying something and not knowing why. Luckily, you're smarter than people. Phew.

Bitcoin, by seanburke on Sept 19, 2017 13:02:13 GMT 1, I've become a bit disillusioned with crypto recently, you can make a lot of money trading but it's very draining keeping an eye on news/feeds/alerts etc.
I held ether since early may this year but actually made more money from a few days trading litecoin this month.
The disillusion bit is that they are all so aligned with Bitcoin - if it moves, so do the rest of them no matter what their good news is.

Bitcoin, by bigp on Sept 19, 2017 13:08:56 GMT 1, I'm a relative newcomer to the crypto scene (4 months) but I'm seriously hooked. The future of smart contracts, small transaction fees and digital currency is the future. Never has there been a better opportunity to take the power away from the greedy bankers and put it firmly back into the peoples hands. But it's still a gamble, investment wise.Bitcoin is the king at the moment but who knows what will happen in the future as there are many coins/tokens making progress. There are over 800 different tokens/coins so choosing the right one is key (investment wise) as 99% of these will fail,in my opinion.

If you don't like it, just stop clicking on the link to this thread and replying. There is quite clearly a wider interest in this and you are in the minority.
It is quite normal to have off-topic sections on a forum, no need to get worked up over it.

Bitcoin, by chevyav53 on Sept 19, 2017 15:00:08 GMT 1, Why all the hate on the thread, as someone mentioned it was created in the Tech Forum. sparky999 I see the definition to stupid yet you have had to delete your own comments about this being an art forum if I recall seeing. Maybe you were too slow to read that this was in the Tech Forum thread or lacking intelligence or reason to think someone in an art forum may not know anything about cryptocurrencies. You yourself were quick to tout your amazing skills in this matter then retracted them as quickly.
By the way I am not that person, just a small fish. Only way I've invested in it before was buying stock in companies with vested interest in blockchain. However, recently jumped in as had a few Gs to burn, tried something new.
After a few months of reading decided on Ethereum as it is being backed by the big boys (JP Morgan, MSFT etc..) who don't like Bitcoin messing with their market and has a focus to the project. Then Litecoin for the hell of it.

You probably won't see this as you said you blocked me earlier but well done for persisting.
Give it a rest now though, eh?
Back on topic, a recent Cambridge University study into Crypto currency has shown that contrary to what some people have already touched on earlier in this thread, it really is a virgin market.
There are only 1,876 people working full-time in the cryptocurrency industry. Of those, the most find work in Asia-Pacific with 720. Behind that is North America with 676 employees.
One person showed a chart earlier showing the rate of growth for Bitcoin. It reminded me of another chart, the amount of debt the U.S. Government has accrued.

Bitcoin, by maxamaxa2 on Sept 19, 2017 20:59:02 GMT 1, I would say that they must make it more user friendly to take the next step. It really is made by programmers without any understanding of society. Its way too complicated to use to attract the masses and to make it more commonly used. Will be interesting to see what happens when it becomes as easy to use as paypal.

Bitcoin, by dappy on Sept 19, 2017 21:46:42 GMT 1, ... Never has there been a better opportunity to take the power away from the greedy bankers and put it firmly back into the peoples hands. There are over 800 different tokens/coins so choosing the right one is key (investment wise) as 99% of these will fail,in my opinion.
... the bankers are now running the show ... see above ... the money men will trade anything where they see they can make a profit ... that is what they will do ...
... other than a few independent companies saying that will accept bitcoin or the like as a trade in goods or services to gain publicity, the price per unit is solely based on trading ... and who is doing that? (rhetorical question)
... tulips ...
ps sparky999 were you for or against the crypto currency? you can PM direct
