Banksy, Walled Off Hotel, GIFT SHOP, by laurentbaboo on Mar 8, 2017 15:05:59 GMT 1, He can't please all the people all the time. Fortunately I think you are in the minority here thinking this and dismalland are not good. I rather suspect he doesn't put these things on for your (or anyone else's) approval. True true. Sadly I don't think he cares about me. Haha I'm not saying they aren't good. I just don't think they are his best and I think his other things are more successful.
Like what? His residency in New York was a brilliant concept, no doubt, as was Dismaland on a different level, and this new project sounds and looks amazing to me. It's funny how when an artist sticks with the same concept and style all the time, and it get criticized, when one comes up with a different concept all the time, it get criticized!

I just don't think they are his best and I think his other things are more successful. Depends on what you mean by successful. I would say the coverage this has already had on the media is already made it a success. Just by getting 'normal' folk to pay attention or discussing it would be what he has set out to do. I think if in a years time, they shut the doors on the hotel due to lack of trade, he would have still succeeded in my eyes.
That's true. My point is the works in Gaza did exactly the same thing yet probably cost considerably less.

To you or me and anyone else that follows Banksy, maybe, but there are still a lot of people out there that would have never even seen these pieces. Doing something so unique and obscure such as this hotel grabs the attention of a whole new bunch of people.

Banksy, Walled Off Hotel, GIFT SHOP, by phat planet on Mar 8, 2017 15:38:14 GMT 1, Banksy is a successful artist and, as any other successful artist, he becomes less accessible to us and more accessible to the affluent. Back in the day perhaps he believed getting affordable art to the masses was important but then he realised it actually served no one but those owning and reselling his prints. "As a kid I always dreamed of growing up to be a character in Robin Hood. I never realised I'd end up playing one of the gold coins." - Banksy People forget just how much he has done that was affordable and attainable and that many individuals have done very well out of it but that does nothing to help the causes that he cares about. Gold Coin v Robin Hood. Dismaland, Walled Off and the many many other things he does behind the scenes are addressing exactly that. He's still the gold coin to many (as this thread proves) but he has actually addressed that balance. Going forwards he has taken more control of his market, he sells prints to the rich and affluent because they will pay the market rate and instead of the profits buying Joe Bloggs a new Kitchen for his swanky 5 bed Banksy now takes that money and is able to better control how it is distributed - maybe even for a new kitchen, only this time will be to feed the needy and homeless.
Let's start seeing some of these secret "rich and affluent" prints!!!

Banksy, Walled Off Hotel, GIFT SHOP, by laurentbaboo on Mar 8, 2017 15:46:12 GMT 1, What he did in Gaza then brought attention to the region, from the press and also from many who would possibly not paid attention to what's going on in the area. If you take into consideration the amount of income that generated Dismaland for Weston Super Mare and its businesses, it makes sense to return to Palestine with a project that could benefit the local industry and economy. The futur might prove me wrong, we can't deny that mr B tried to contribute.

I have no idea why someone is even criticising his efforts to give to the locals and leave them with saleable artworks. Sorry but if you are a glass half empty person then that is not my problem. Cant really sit by and watch this criticism as one of the people that has been directly affected by his huge generosity, he's an absolute diamond, if you haven't met, worked with and been the recipient of that then sorry but yes it really does exist, it aint no fairy tale, I wont have a word said against the man, he is the real deal and that is all i'm saying on the matter. Cant please all the people all the time.

He could be the greatest human ever but that doesn't mean every piece of art he creates is great or successful.
Is he an artist creating art? Philanthropist giving to the needy? Is he both? Does that mean he's equally great at both?

Why is trying to do something to help with his own money up for any criticism? I don't remember him holding a fundraiser for this project

It's not a criticism of him helping people. That's where fans are getting it wrong.
Banksy is an artist. Critiquing the art of banksy is fair game.

Answer's pretty obvious. Much like in the days of recording the top 40 off radio 1 vs going out and buying the Mr Blobby single and actually owning something officially recognised as from and approved by Noel Edmonds.

Honestly people would loose there minds.
Saying the originals are 'realer' and should be worth more. And signed ones now demand a billion fold more.
It would be incredible and it would also expose so many banksy supports are really just greed supporters.

I think you have a very cynical view of Banksy. I think you have a very cynical view of his fans. Of course lots of those fans would be upset if their Banksy prints lost their value. That's just common sense. But that may not be why many fans bought Banksy prints. It certainly doesn't mean that Banksy supporters are "just greed supporters " as you put it. That's false logic. There are, of course, exceptions. Further, you should avoid tarring everyone with the same brush (or assuming that you know other people's intentions/ethics/motivations).

I think you are mis interpreting. No where did I say every banksy fan and I actually said 'not everyone'
But something like that would cause pandemonium among banksy print holders. And sadly a lot of banksy print holders did buy there banksy prints for status just like people want to buy Picasso, Warhol, Dali...

Im not sure I get the intent behind this statement. 'Art' is not an exclusive club for trust fund babies as you say.. in fact 99% of art is very accessible an within most collectors means. Banksy was one of these artists once as well with many collectors having had the opportunity to buy prints when originally released. Why would you want to hurt someone else's financial position that they may have gained over time as the monetary value of these prints has risen. So you can personally benefit?

Banksy, Walled Off Hotel, GIFT SHOP, by mojo on Mar 9, 2017 18:13:07 GMT 1, Hopefully they will sell aerosol cans as it is near impossible to get them through customs .... I had all mine confiscated on the way to Santa's Ghetto 2007.
Anyone going have a great time and spend spend spend ..... not necessarily just in the Wall*Mart shop but everywhere, fill your bags with anything useful on the way out, I took paint, pens & paper for the kids. I left most of my clothes, trainers, make up and wash bag with some of the locals I met that lived in the camps. I met so many interesting, humble, gentle and considerate people...despite all the warnings about it being such a dangerous place before I went. I would consider myself pretty well traveled and Palestine is most definitely one of the most memorable trips I have ever made,....I also had one of the best Mexican meals I have ever eaten in Palestine!

Banksy was one of these artists once as well with many collectors having had the opportunity to buy prints when originally released. Why would you want to hurt someone else's financial position that they may have gained over time as the monetary value of these prints has risen. So you can personally benefit?
Does no one understand banksys morons print anymore?!?!?
Worried about the rich art collector who buys work for prestige. Isn't making fun of them what got banksy popular? Now his prints define this.
Oh the irony is so rich.
I hope he releases all his prints unsigned and embossed! Art shouldn't be an exclusive club for the trust fund babies. Im not sure I get the intent behind this statement. Banksy, Walled Off Hotel, GIFT SHOP, by vulva on Mar 9, 2017 19:33:48 GMT 1, I like falafel, very much. I also like to refine ugly things into the most mesmerizing colours. So what's the catch here? Does one get out of there alive?

Banksy, Walled Off Hotel, GIFT SHOP, by vulva on Mar 9, 2017 19:46:22 GMT 1, I hope he releases all his prints unsigned and embossed! Art shouldn't be an exclusive club for the trust fund babies. Honestly people would loose there minds. Saying the originals are 'realer' and should be worth more. And signed ones now demand a billion fold more. It would be incredible and it would also expose so many banksy supports are really just greed supporters.
Lets talk about you, what's in it for you, how do you contribute to the scene?
