Banksy, Walled Off Hotel, GIFT SHOP, by Coach on Mar 8, 2017 0:49:41 GMT 1, Definitely, I know I would if I was him. Have a quick look to see what monies my prints are fetching. Morons the lot of em Sorry to be utterly depressing but this place for the main is the antithesis of what he's trying to achieve
The introduction of the myriad of price check threads probably didn't help.

Banksy, Walled Off Hotel, GIFT SHOP, by Sturban Has Saggy Tits on Mar 8, 2017 0:51:00 GMT 1, I don't know why people seem put off by the bunk beds. I love bunk beds. Plus it's lovely to sleep with others around you. You feel all warm and secure. Safe in the knowledge that you'll all be able to fight off an attacker together or you at least won't die alone. I'd be all for the bunk beds. Plus, I'd feel like a bit of a tool sleeping in a "luxury" bed.
All sounds good until you get a snorer next to you or worse still a bed wetter above you

I'm going to invent a Banksy print calculator app to sort all that. Enter the print name, enter today's date and boom! No need for Bob and Bob anymore.

Banksy, Walled Off Hotel, GIFT SHOP, by Deleted on Mar 8, 2017 1:09:10 GMT 1, Not spoutings**t at all. I'm sure sales to wealthy buyers fund this and funded dismalland. And us average chaps get to enjoy the fruits. Ok with me. Still think more of a balance could be struck. Something a long the lines a Josh Keyes tiny showcase approach that gives everyday people the chance to own a top artist's work at an affordable price. Just because Banksy's Banksy he seems to get an easy ride on here for pricing himself out of reach of all but the 1%ers that so much of his work is against. I thought the whole point of going all the way to Palestine, Bethlehem was to visit the hotel, stay a few nights and be part of it and come away with the experience and knowledge that it's not about shopping.

Usually it does the opposite.

Banksy, Walled Off Hotel, GIFT SHOP, by Rouen Cathedral on Mar 8, 2017 1:38:27 GMT 1, Imagine if he didn't do the innovative "shows/events". Imagine if he just rested on his laurels and put out a couple of high-priced prints each year or every time valentine's day came around. Imagine how dull that would be. Too limited. Too expensive. Too similar. Not an image I like. Mine arrived creased and I'm crying, etc, etc. It'd be tedious. His projects might not be for everyone, but he's bloody having a go.
This is probably true.
But why secret high dollar prints to the elite and these shows/events?
Why not hit the streets?
The NY residencey was brilliant for that.
This and dismaland is not close. Give me 1 million dollar on sales from prints to the rich and I'll put something on too!

What do you mean?
The girl with balloons on the wall outside was to the local community. A hotel for rich collectors to stream to and to sleep next to an original is not for the local community in my eyes.

It means the money made from it is theirs, the originals in the hotel are theirs, the people employed are from the community, it means this is all about helping a group of people.

Give me 1 million dollar on sales from prints to the rich and I'll put something on too! I would imagine that it's far easier, with fewer tears, to sell expensive prints to a small group of affluent art anoraks, than it is to sell more affordable prints to a wider group of people. He's done that already. It appears (at times) to have been a bit of an arse ache. I think it's just easier, instead of some secret attempt to keep his street image intact. People talk. And no art fan will want to buy an expensive print/original, then never show it off. So, You're never going to keep your "secret" prints secret. I'm sure he knows that.
Think of him as milking rich cows.
Think of Banky's paint-covered hands slowly going up and down on a rich cow's teats.
Think about that.
Are you thinking about it?
Anyway, plus, he can release things any way he sees fit. Not everything is for everyone.
Why not hit the streets? I would say he's done that. Plenty of times.
I think it's wonderful that you would put on an art event, with the proceeds from selling prints to the wealthy. I fully encourage you to do that. I cannot encourage you enough. I wish more artists were like you and Banksy. Many artists make a comfortable living from art, yet they don't do these kind of things.
You're allowed to make a living from art. You're allowed to own a Mercedes. You're allowed to give all of your earnings to the poor, while you wear rags and live like a saint in a cave. If you can do any combination of that, while doing more good than harm, then that's brilliant.
Banksy doesn't need to be a saint. He doesn't need to be a spray-can wielding street urchin. If he is, I don't really care. I just care that he does more good than harm. That he creates more good than harm.

Amen to that. He has certainly used his position to help tons of causes, youth centres, schools, the boxing club etc. As for 'hitting the streets', all of these huge budget projects ARE hitting the streets, getting the message across and drawing attention to struggles and the insane inequality in the world, isn't that the plan? He could go apeshit and paint everywhere and get himself busted and screw it all up but what would be the point when you can really make a difference and do things with a ton more swag than slapping up a stencil. He's possibly not moved on entirely form street based interventions and witty commenting, placement etc, lets not write it off just yet because there's only so much people can do while heavily involved in the bigger picture with greater goals. He has given away a huge amount of art and money, good man.

Plenty of nails hit on the head there doc

Banksy, Walled Off Hotel, GIFT SHOP, by Rouen Cathedral on Mar 8, 2017 13:04:42 GMT 1, I would imagine that it's far easier, with fewer tears, to sell expensive prints to a small group of affluent art anoraks, than it is to sell more affordable prints to a wider group of people. He's done that already. It appears (at times) to have been a bit of an arse ache. I think it's just easier, instead of some secret attempt to keep his street image intact. People talk.
I disagree that this is hitting the streets.
This is no more sucessful than his works in Gaza. To me it's less.
"Paint everywhere and get him self busted and screw it all up" - isn't that what made banksy banksy?
Im not a fan of these large scale works. Too big, too rich, too impersonal.

Banksy, Walled Off Hotel, GIFT SHOP, by Rouen Cathedral on Mar 8, 2017 13:07:54 GMT 1, What do you mean? The girl with balloons on the wall outside was to the local community. A hotel for rich collectors to stream to and to sleep next to an original is not for the local community in my eyes. It means the money made from it is theirs, the originals in the hotel are theirs, the people employed are from the community, it means this is all about helping a group of people.
Is it? Are they?
So when people stop going he's just going to leave the originals?
Yes he's employing the community- boosting some tourism and interest. Hats off to that. But is it really even going to equate to the price it cost to put this on?

And we have no idea how much this cost (in paint and materials) to create. Or how much the following publicity, awareness and tourism will be worth to the area and its people. We're all just speculating. We have to take him at his word. Or not, it's up to you.
In many ways, it's better than just giving them a cheque though. I mean, they could flog this horse for years. Long after donation money dried up, this could still be generating an income.
Give a man a fish, and all that.
Edit: Sorry, I'm vegan, forget the fish thing.

They will see how the Palestinians have to live, they'll put some money into the local economy, take some pictures (not OFF the walls), then come back and share their thoughts on their time there.
With his previous works in Gaza, people were more likely to just view from afar.
Don't worry though, I'm sure he'll continue to create more personal and modest street works in the future.

He can't please all the people all the time. Fortunately I think you are in the minority here thinking this and dismalland are not good. I rather suspect he doesn't put these things on for your (or anyone else's) approval.

I get this. And I think in theory it's all great. I understand why he did it and what he's attempting to do with it. I just question whether it will be as successful as the theory of it.
To me the personal and modest street works are what makes him great. Add a larger thing here and there and it's a great balance. But these colossal pieces (dismaland/hotel) are reminiscent of a rich conglomerate that to me actually makes it less sincere than the other things (NYC and gaza)

True true. Sadly I don't think he cares about me. Haha
I'm not saying they aren't good. I just don't think they are his best and I think his other things are more successful.

Depends on what you mean by successful. I would say the coverage this has already had on the media is already made it a success. Just by getting 'normal' folk to pay attention or discussing it would be what he has set out to do. I think if in a years time, they shut the doors on the hotel due to lack of trade, he would have still succeeded in my eyes.

Banksy, Walled Off Hotel, GIFT SHOP, by 11 on Mar 8, 2017 14:54:28 GMT 1, Banksy is a successful artist and, as any other successful artist, he becomes less accessible to us and more accessible to the affluent. Back in the day perhaps he believed getting affordable art to the masses was important but then he realised it actually served no one but those owning and reselling his prints.
"As a kid I always dreamed of growing up to be a character in Robin Hood. I never realised I'd end up playing one of the gold coins." - Banksy
People forget just how much he has done that was affordable and attainable and that many individuals have done very well out of it but that does nothing to help the causes that he cares about.
Gold Coin v Robin Hood.
Dismaland, Walled Off and the many many other things he does behind the scenes are addressing exactly that. He's still the gold coin to many (as this thread proves) but he has actually addressed that balance. Going forwards he has taken more control of his market, he sells prints to the rich and affluent because they will pay the market rate and instead of the profits buying Joe Bloggs a new Kitchen for his swanky 5 bed Banksy now takes that money and is able to better control how it is distributed - maybe even for a new kitchen, only this time will be to feed the needy and homeless.
