Jasper Johns πΊπΈ Painter β’ Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism , by Deleted on Jun 23, 2017 12:25:27 GMT 1, I never heard anyone talking about Jasper Johns on this forum until these cheap posters came up. Except for the original poster of the thread, motivation? MONEY! Far from cheap posters.
There again, better a cheap poster, than a cheap poser.

Jasper Johns πΊπΈ Painter β’ Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism , by nah on Jun 23, 2017 12:26:09 GMT 1, Everything aside, $150-$250 for lithographs of this age and quality from such an esteemed publisher seems like a fair price to me. Exhibition posters sell for more than that. A shame '0-9' sold out so fast, strongest one for me.

It's an urban art board. Ralph Steadman isn't urban art either, but when an interesting opportunity pops up from a great artist I hope that people will continue to post them.

Jasper Johns πΊπΈ Painter β’ Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism , by d.r. perseus on Jun 23, 2017 14:56:42 GMT 1, This thread seemed to accelerate with the posting of the "nice" frame up that happened to sell for 1k plus at auction. Oh wait a 150$ print that sells for how much!?! JJ is a great artist but these fail to capture, for me, any of the magic I can go see from originals in Los Angeles museums. 0-9 or numbers is close though. However I don't believe these were snapped up by Johns fans. Hell even OP asked about his history when so many of JJ originals are down the street from him and accessible. Pure speculation by the majority is my bet. Please do not insult my intelligence. Am I expected to be a expert on every major artist?. I'll never be. And that's the point. I was reading up on johns when I came across these prints. I thought they were pretty cool. Clear explanation, excellent provenance. Thought Id be a contributing member of this community and make a short post. Your right, I don't know much about johns, but I do live two blocks from the lacma, and I'd love a guided tour if your offering? Thank you everyone else for all for the kind words! Please post your frame ups!!
All well and good and any time. I would say in fair play, also don't insult mine intelligence and conveniently ignore or pretend you posted that auction frame up as a "good example" of what they look like framed and you don't see dollar signs. That would be disingenuous. That frame up was ugly and the only thing that link had to offer was the potential for a quick buck. Hell maybe it does! You're a very good speculator and mover of art!! Anyway,. I think it's rad you found these and shared with the community. It's 100x more than I've ever contributed. If lightening strikes twice and you find some similar Rauschenberg prints feel free to share.

Jasper Johns πΊπΈ Painter β’ Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism , by bruin on Jun 23, 2017 15:18:35 GMT 1, If you are interested in Rauschenberg prints and can get to NYC, MOMA has an interesting limited edition set of his Dante's Inferno prints that don't appear to be on sale online. I don't even care for Rauschenberg and his combines that much, but I loved these prints.
Back to Johns - can't wait to get my prints! And thanks to the OP.

I'll meet you in the middle, and admit that posting that auction was probably in poor form. However, I thought the frame job was awesome and will be doing mine the same. Also, I genuinely wasn't trying to hype. I have no stake in ulae, just wanted to share what they looked like framed (next time I will simply post the photo).
If your game, id love to hit the lacma and swap stories. The best part of this hobby for me is learning about the art history aspect. Like I said, I still don't "get" or really even understand JJ (even after reading some very well articulated posts in this thread), but maybe it's just a matter of taste. All I know is I love my country, despite its flaws, and those flag images are really representative of my personal feelings on patriotism. Hell, maybe I'm starting to understand his work after all!

Jasper Johns πΊπΈ Painter β’ Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism , by Drymounted on Jun 23, 2017 20:31:25 GMT 1, Well..These arrived fast. As others have stated, the quality is INCREDIBLE. The paper flattened right out once untubed. Like many others, I am considering going back for more. I can't believe that these have hung around as long as they have, but I hope they stick around a bit longer so that I can pickup the others that I left behind!

Jasper Johns πΊπΈ Painter β’ Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism , by Drymounted on Jun 24, 2017 0:38:15 GMT 1, Who is Uale shipping through in the US? Did they need to be signed for? Thx, happy weekend folks. EC Shipped Fedex and have to sign for it. At least in my case. Same with me as well. The tube was definitely packaged different than most that I have received. Only capped on one end, the prints wrapped in kraft, then an outer layer of bubble. Then the bubble attached to the taped end. They also didn't leave a gap between the print and the tube wall. Any denting of the tube could be disastrous.
I have to admit...I was nervous opening the tube, but all was safe and sound!

Jasper Johns πΊπΈ Painter β’ Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism , by Gentle Mental on Jun 24, 2017 6:21:39 GMT 1,
what's the difference between these and unsigned prints?
is it just the missing "numbering"?
they're over 40 years old...so they are limited (for this run anyway)
people pay way more for an unsigned, re-sized, giclee (!) ritcher....
i'm curious what's holding the flippers back...

very cool to own something from the time period, printed with the same process and 'authorized' etc. - market value aside it has a lot of the appeal of an original print for me personally

I reckon you got the 3 strongest prints there. 0-9 is def top of the list and I'm now feeling a bit gutted for not buying one before they sold out

Jasper Johns πΊπΈ Painter β’ Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism , by Deleted on Jun 24, 2017 14:06:20 GMT 1, Also quite a few "urban artists" are just professional mural artists that paint on legal walls and also graphic designers who design and make prints. These are represented and sold by galleries usually.
Plus a lot of urban artists who make a living from it and sell prints take inspiration and ideas from pop art and other art movements and from artists such as Rothko, Indiana, Picasso, Dali, from advertising and corporate branding too, etc etc etc.
There are categories on here for Hirst and Emin as well. Peter Blake is well discussed on here. Fairey made some illegal paste ups years and years ago and his churning out of formulaic graphic designed prints nowadays is as far removed from graffiti and urban art as one can get. I know he still does big wall but in reality it's just billboards advertising the Fairey brand.
I cannot see how one can appreciate urban art and buy the prints without also appreciating the artists who made art decades ago in many cases who inspire todays urban artists.

I really appreciate that my interst in coming to the forum has also opened up new areas of discovery for me. like music, appreciation of any art form would imply that you appreciate what the artist has to say, that would also include, in my humble opinion how he ended up there, so naturally any past influences would also be of interest. I had no real knowledge of Jasper johns until I read the OP but I have now started looking. What could be better. I have also purchased 2 prints that I like, something else that I would not have even thought of. I can see nothing negative about the OP post and its' fallout. Thanks again to Howard Johnson

Last night I noticed that these were printed on the original type of paper that was used to print the originals so not all of them are the same. I found myself looking up the different types of paper and how and where they were made. Just fascinating the thought process that went into these prints, well at least I enjoy it but I'm kind of weird that way.

Except for the original poster of the thread, motivation? MONEY! There's probably not been a show or print release, or his work printed on cushions or a skateboard... plus he's not Urban Art. But yes, this forum is a lot about art as investment as well as enjoying it. Jasper Johns inspired work from Shepard Fairey

These are very nice prints with a lot of art history and I for one am very glad I jumped in on them. These are the first three but I went back and got the whole set which will hopefully be delivered next week. I love the contrast between False Start 1&2 but I think 'Painting with Two Balls' is exceptional as well. This pic doesn't really do them justice. Thanks for posting the videos Ploppi and Probored as it really is interesting in learning more about different printing processes.
