What do we all do for a living?, by Hairbland on Aug 19, 2021 14:15:47 GMT 1, The last week of April, 2010, Monday, my wife asked for a divorce. At the end of the week I was laid off from Tommy Boy Records. I met with a divorce attorney, who said “Great! Whatever you do, don’t get a job!”
My now-ex, for some reason set me up for an art show at a small but very visible space in June 2010, having been in the music biz I knew how to jumpstart press, got a bunch and sold some paintings.
I worked in the music biz 90s-00s, with indies introducing bands like Galaxie 500, Teenage Fanclub and more, even got to work a Mark E. Smith Fall record without being punched. Worked at Atlantic on stuff like Everything But The Girl, Pavement, Liz Phair then The Enclave where we signed Belle & Sebastian to their North America deal. I became a consultant, sometimes hired, until 2010. Being a consultant was good training for figuring out how to get by. You always get paid late, and sometimes not at all! I did great with Airbnb for 4 years until the pandemic, and I work with Karl Wallinger, reissuing his catalog on vinyl this year and next, we’ve been mates for over 16 years now.
I got more heavily into painting over the last 10 years, since my divorce attorney suggested not working. Last month I sold two paintings.

What do we all do for a living?, by That Print Guy on Aug 19, 2021 14:45:02 GMT 1, I used to write code all day. But for the last 7 years I've been reselling full? time. 2020 was my best year yet by like 100%. Have definitely been taking it easy this year and changing lots of diapers. My inventory has ballooned but that only means I have plenty of work for the future. Can't imagine ever working for someone else again.

I work in finance and can't easily do trading on the side. Need permission for every trade. I want to do something non IT/trading. ok with setting up a website for a business but dont want to work for myself doing it. Im well paid in my full time job hence the need for a side hustle. i cant take the gamble and jump ship, i need the income matched right away. If I get made redundant, which theres a good chance of,i can try something new then.

I paint/draw/exhibit on the side which brings in about a third of my yearly income.

What do we all do for a living?, by JockoLad on Feb 5, 2022 13:59:29 GMT 1, Primary school teacher. Best job in the world.
Not so long ago entered a national art competition with my P4 class. Hardest class I’ve ever taught by a long shot - par example, one kid once drew a cock and balls on the classroom roof and the same kid shouted out and called me a ‘shagger’ whilst a student was in the class. Happy days.
Out of 18,000 entrants we won.
Had our art work hang in the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art for several months and then it toured the country.
Will try to post a photo of it when I can.
As I said earlier, best job in the world.

What do we all do for a living?, by JockoLad on Feb 5, 2022 14:09:38 GMT 1, Winning entry.
Can’t remember the exact dimension but was around 1m by 1.5m.
We based it upon Shetland’s Up Helly Aa with the children using a variety of techniques to create the Vikings, houses, flames etc. was a labour of love but paid off. Whole class got to visit the gallery and were provided a free art class and lots of art equipment also.

What do we all do for a living?, by JockoLad on Feb 5, 2022 14:52:39 GMT 1, We got a write up in Shetland Times but I can’t find a link. Aside from that I was quite saddened by how overlooked it was. My school is in an are of quite extreme poverty and I felt that made our win that little bit special.
Here’s a link to the 2019 competition. If you watch the video the kid with the red hair who suggests people just entered and give it a shot was one of mine - when I watched her interviewed I knew they would use her in the video as she really captured the essence of the competition.

We were the winners in the group category.
I love the fact the kids have all had work displayed in a National Gallery. How many artists can say that!

Sadly not but would love to see what become of the kids - would be quite something being credited for someone’s entry into the world of art.
True story - the kid who drew the cock and balls on the roof of the class got really into a lesson about Salvador Dali and surrealism. Whilst visiting the gallery of Modern Art the incredibly well healed guide led us into a room, pointed to a painting and asked who the children thought might have painted it. The aforementioned child put up his hand and in his strong Kilmarnock accent stated ‘Dali’. ‘Very good,’ she responded, quite taken aback. ‘Do you know style of painting?’… ‘Aye, surrealism.’ Never been so proud. He still raves about Dali to this day and goes out of his way to pretend he’s got a Dali moustache any opportunity he gets.
