Stanley Donwood's 'The Hartmann Portfolio' is a boxed set of 6 linocut prints and a covering note (set in letterpress) on Fabriano paper. Stanley was commissioned by Ian Bone (the founder of Class War) to illustrate the republished 1893 novel 'Hartmann The Anarchist', and did so by utilising his 'London Views' style to depict various scenes of chaos in the Capital. The edition runs to only 23 sets and is priced at £230, due entirely to Donwood's interest in enigmatic numerological characteristics.

Just to say these are lovely in the flesh. I particularly like the bronze from the second edition. Here's a photo of my original gold:

I was unfortunate the first time round as my print was literally cracking - due to the amount of layering and the way sandbag had rolled it. Had to send it back for money back as no replacement. That has put me off buying another just in case the same thing happens.

Yeah - I think so, my mate's one was fine. The one I was sent was rolled along the shorter edge - that's why I had a problem. Yours looks great - the original gold remains the best one IMO.

Sorry to hear that winter. bitpunk is right - given the fairly small size of these prints, surely they could be sent out flat. I'm guessing yours won't be the only one damaged.

After sending pictures of all 3 damaged prints through to Slowlydownward they have told me they have no spares and, get this, they would refund me 10% if I kept the damaged ones!!

This is after I paid £30 postage. £30 to cover 3 tiny prints wedged into a toilet roll sized tube, not even 3 seperate tubes after I paid three times the postage.

For starters I can't believe an artist of his calibre is being let down by whoever is packing and sending his work out. I can't believe they don't have spares to send out, even artists proofs and I can't believe the terrible gesture of 10% off and the fact they are prepared to rip off customers who have paid for postage with cheap, sub-standard tubes.

This is the worse service I have EVER had.

I apologise for starting this thread but will update on my progress.

Sorry to hear that winter. Not impressed with Sandbag. 10% refund? What's the point in keeping them if they're damaged. I don't mind a little creasing in the borders that can be framed out, but if the damage ruins the image (which it did on the one I was sent) then what's the point in keeping them - even if they offer a 90% refund? I was told no spares too for the 1st edition.

I was going to go for these the other day ...... glad i didnt.

Very sad state of affairs offering only a 10% refund, doesnt enrich me to buy from them in future.

Should get a least a full refund including Postage outlay would be my take .......... maybe times are hard and trying to fob you off with 10% expect you to say ok.

Let us know the outcome, or it may be black mark time.

I thought they had a legal obligation to give you a full refund if they were bought off the internet, distance buying or something, somebody more in tune with internet legalities should be able to help.
