Heres the lowdown from me -

Couldnt give a shit about Diana - As for the craftwork i think the actual piece itself is shite but it has got quite an emotional response from quite a few. As art isn't always about 'pretty' pictures I think the piece has done it's job. Because of the emotional response of the 'viewer'. The emotional response from myself was I felt the piece was trying to be controversial for the sake of controversy.

Nothing personal PE its just not my thing.

I have made 12 screenprinted canvasses that are each about 1.5m wide of an image I saw in the newspaper about 2 months ago that hit me HARD...the mangled wreckage is terrifying and the thought of there being humans inside that wreckage is horrific... I wanted to find a way of processing that and looking into it, and I thought very hard about why I couldnt stop looking at it... and then I decided to do something about it...

By mass manufacturing an image and repeating images again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again we are desensetised to the HORROR of the image... We see images of violence on TV and in newspapers every single day and over time we just stop caring about it, because its our way of dealing with things... If we see a picture of a dead civilian lying in some foreign street we think its awful, but after a while its just ANOTHER image of a dead person... 9/11 was shocking when it happened and it still is, but over time it becomes a part of the past and our memories of that day fade a little , like a photograph fades ... There are images of Princess Diana in the paper everyday now and we can watch documentaries with footage of the terrible crash, but I think the more we are bombarded by those images we just end up filtering them out...

I just stretched one of the canvasses today and I had to sit down and really look at the image for a long time... Its a shocking image of a once powerful expensive car that has been pulverised, and its shocking because we know that peoples lives ended in that vehicle... I want people to look at it up close and really think about what it means...

I am glad that people hate this image and hate me for doing it and I respect their opinions but I am determined to be challenging and take risks and not to take the safest path .

Nice post PE. I agree with you. This piece doesn't really provoke much of a reaction in me, maybe because we have seen the crasehd car so many times. It certainly doesn't anger me greatly but, as a piece of art, it doesn't do much for me either.

PE - your images do not challenge or take risks, as you say yourself we have seen this image again and again and again...yawn.

I dont hate you for doing this image, its your right, I just dont think it rises above the realms of A Level art.

You have posted a Warhol on your reply as if this somehow justfies / gives credibility to your work. It doesnt , it merely gives more to Warhols.

If someone wanted to be challenging, why would they constantly post up their images on this site in order to seek approval from forum members. Thats hardly the actions of someone who takes risks.....

I can't say i like PE's earlier work enough to buy it (except for maybe bunny fingers) but i think this one draws on a very controversial subject at a time which is back in the public eye for what i think are all the wrong reasons

I dont think for a minute PE compares himself with Warhol and what a lot of you seem to have missed is that this is purely an influence just as many artists have influences eg Insects Dead Cows being a very obvious one. The whole concept of multiple prints mass produced for the appreciation of all is a very Warhol concept and influences many artists which you all love and buy (if they dont manage to sell out in 30 seconds that is ).


Lady Diana Car Crash appears to draw on images like Green Car Crash and ideas presented in Jackie. Both Jackie and Diana were icons of their time, beautiful, glamerous and stylish and while Warhol's image would have meant a great deal to those of the time PE's though much less famous relates to people today who are much more familiar with Diana. I think it's a clever abstract piece which brings to mind many images and events of the time without the image of Diana actually being present in the work.

I'ts just an opinion of course..

AS a talking point for art it has done it's job, provoked a strong reaction form you guys and got you talking.

Bad taste possibly, good art to view, I would say no. With her children still alive too, fear for the world, and this print is just as sensational and in bad taste as to what the so-called newspapers publish. I don;t want the world full of robots, but good grief, have a heart yourself

Notice all the haters have got negged, that is crap, and I don't care if you neg me, says more about you than me.

All I know is if someone took a picture of my dead mother, or how she died, and called it art, I would smash the little sh*tes head in, take a picture and do my own "colourways" ,mainly in red.

well said mate, its crap. just like PE's Sergeant Pepper piece, coincidently released around the anniversary of said album.

All it did was ruin a piece of art by a good artist - Peter Blake. Now hes trying tell us he takes his influences from Warhol.

Bizarrely enough a mysterious benefactor has offered me a bigger space in the same area for free, so in a month or so after my show in Beijing my plan is to upgrade and add a few more artists to the mix and get SERIOUS. I sold 2 of the big neon bunnies in the last 2 days and I am planning to do probably about 10 more of those ones sandwiched between 2 way mirrors so that you get an 'INFINITE BUNNY' that seems to repeat and fade off into the distance. Its going to RULE.

I'm planning shows in Beijing , Antwerp , Sao Paulo , St Petersburg and New York hopefully but the only downer is I cant stop thinking about everything that needs to be done and I have insomnia.
