Harland Miller Show, by Cardiff on Apr 19, 2016 19:58:47 GMT 1, I love a couple of the pieces in the preview (esp High On Hope & Bull Seeks China Shop)...comment and question for the folks that have HM works hanging on their walls...
I really like the aesthetic of his larger format works and have thought about adding one of his prints (there are a few slogans/messages that resonate with me). My concern is that I might grow tired of the singular message quickly. I'd be interested in people's thoughts on how their pieces have grown on them over time. Do you like it more/less?

Harland Miller Show, by Howard Johnson on Apr 19, 2016 22:06:23 GMT 1, I'd also love to hear some insights from fans on his work. Personally, I don't get the contemporary artists that mainly deal in text, i.e. Harland Miller, Christopher Wool, and Richard Prince's Joke pieces. What is the appeal here beyond a clever slogan?

When you see a HM in the flesh it becomes less about the text and more about the layers of paint and texture, for me anyway. Regards the slogan I think that's quite subjective. If you connect with what it says then it can really make you want it. If you don't then obviously less so. But seriously the depth in the paintwork is impressive.

I find the text he chooses remain openly subjective and the meaning seems to evolve as I do. There is a lot of intention behind the text he chooses beyond being a clever slogan I feel. There are some great vids online of him talking about one of his works as well.

Personally, I don't get the contemporary artists that mainly deal in text, i.e. Harland Miller, Christopher Wool, and Richard Prince's Joke pieces. What is the appeal here beyond a clever slogan? I have 2 (death and where its fucking at) and they are amongst my all time favourite pieces
Appeal for me is -The texts are absolutely hilarious, and profound. Like drinking a pint and shooting the shit with Plato. I mean seriously "count on me...", "no business like no business etc..." - The choice of battered penguin books appeal to every schoolboy, no matter what you studied. The book that has taken a beating from being pored over too many times trying to extract the quintessential elements captured by the title really resonates - they look great. really reckon' beautiful
I do not have any OGs. Wish I did but am not spending that kind of money on art, but having seen many, the work that goes into them is exactly like the sweat and tears of a scholar reading his books for his thesis...
All of this is subjective, but really if you catch a show and see his OGs I would love to know what you thought

Harland Miller Show, by trapnel1 on Apr 19, 2016 23:54:17 GMT 1, I'd also love to hear some insights from fans on his work. Personally, I don't get the contemporary artists that mainly deal in text, i.e. Harland Miller, Christopher Wool, and Richard Prince's Joke pieces. What is the appeal here beyond a clever slogan? I'm a big fan of text-based art. Not all of it, of course, just as nobody likes all visual art. All of us think differently. Some think more visually (including most art lovers, I would imagine) or mathematically, while others are more linguistic. I have always loved books and reading, and that underpins my fondness for text based art.
I have a Robert Montgomery piece and two HMs on the walls (a large International Lonely Guy and a smaller High on Hope OG). In each case the words have or had a particular resonance for me at a phase in my life. Just as the taste and smell of the Madeleine triggered for Proust the involuntary memory trail of Remembrance of Things, or the sound of Norwegian Wood on the landing of the aircraft leads to the story in Murakami's novel of the same name, so the sight of HMs text invariably brings memories and associations to mind of which I never tire.
Added to which, they are visually attractive!

I think art and slogans as a painting can work great. If not over done. I guess some artists get recognised for this type of word art and if it sells, decide to keep doing it.

Harland Miller Show, by Retired Mafia on Apr 20, 2016 3:50:41 GMT 1, I love my Harland Miller.
I just find his works (words) witty, self-deprecating and at times heavily loaded with sarcasm, misery and romance.
And the details on the print is simply incredible - totally not what I expected and nothing like what I've had or seen before.
So yeah, I bought this as a 'gift' to the missus - I just love the sentiment (if I get it correctly) and a nice little reminder of life and relationships.

The ambiguity of the text in each piece is also what I love about them.

Don't you just love those money grabbing high end art galleries? Fortunately I don't like Harland Miller so it doesn't really affect me, but from a purely objective perspective, and given what Blain Southern have done for former YBA Mat Collishaw's now flatlined career, I wouldn't automatically see these as a rock solid investment.
