Art in flight!, by Dan Kitchener on Apr 9, 2016 12:16:47 GMT 1, In recent years I have been fortunate to travel an awful lot and one thing has always bothered me, the boring, bland, grey or black luggage that people use, every time i collect my luggage I think, i am going to paint mine for my next trip! So as I am off to SOuthern Spain for a commission next week, i thought i'd paint my case, and now have started the ball rolling, so i am painting several pieces for customers, hand luggage and main luggage with different cities on! NYC, Tokyo and London pictured here!

If I was you I would send photos of these off to a few.

Careful Dan, some might suggest you are influencing selling out

Art in flight!, by russkov on Apr 9, 2016 13:43:38 GMT 1, I think it is agreat idea, just 2 moments: how will it last in the transport life? nothing is as sad as a art piece that gets damaged, 100% that the luggage will. Second momemt: I can guarantee that your item will get "lost" someday, as soon as the airport staff handling luggage will find out that this may have a directly visible value...

Art in flight!, by Dan Kitchener on Apr 9, 2016 14:00:33 GMT 1, Thanks for the response!
Well with regards to 'selling out' i am an artist, and i paint on things, end of story really! I don't operate under some illusion of 'being secretive or street' etc etc, i do what i do.....street walls, canvas, digital or now suitcases, all the same to me, a surface to slap paint onto!
These are painted for me when i travel abroad on commissions, of which i have several major ones worldwide approaching, so thought it would be good to slap some paint on my luggage and take to new adventures, don't care about longevity and in fact look forward to the well travelled, beaten, battered and used appearance it will have at the end of the year...then again, they have a decent coat of hard varnish over them!

Art in flight!, by Daniel Silk on Apr 9, 2016 14:22:36 GMT 1, You made the original comment, so what do you mean by selling out!? Cornishcrayon mentioned "selling out".
I only use the word "Selling Out" in the way or being popular I think if these were produced in large numbers then I think they would sell out, and well deserved! Dan's an amazing Artist and would be great to see his designs being wheeled around on cases all over the world.
I think others use the word "Selling Out" in a way of judging people as if everything they do must be for free or with some kind of political or social message, like a protest. I dont think its fair really to judge anyone like that.

Art in flight!, by Dan Kitchener on Apr 9, 2016 14:32:51 GMT 1, thanks for the reply Dan
I wouldn't be keen on the mass produced luggage, as tbh these were just for me, and each is hand painted and this aspect is the attraction to me. It's something out of the ordinary, not just a printed piece of plastic!
If artist do work more commercially, It's not 'selling out', as that feels like slightly school boy terminology ( no offence aimed at original person who made the comment ), we live in the real world, and have to earn a living. I just don't feel at them moment it's a direction I'd want my work to move towards.

Art in flight!, by stillborncrisps on Apr 11, 2016 0:58:53 GMT 1, Seeing a piece get battered and scuffed as it travels round the world will actually add to it. Brings it all to life.
No different to street pieces getting tagged, weathered, and then eventually painted out altogether. They were born and then they lived and then they died.

Art in flight!, by Dan Kitchener on Apr 15, 2016 17:56:25 GMT 1, Just got back from painting a commission in Dos Torres / southern spain, and both pieces of luggage are nice and fresh still, even with me using my smaller one at the wall / building site!
