I was thrilled to have actually grabbed one of the Run DMC prints yesterday before they sold out in a nano-second.

So cool that it is signed by Rev Run and Darrell McDaniel (DMC) as I have always kicked myself for not getting them to autograph something for me when we did an event a dozen years or so ago.

Now it seems as though Shepard is teasing a print based on a similar Beastie Boys image he's using for apparel. Would be awesome side-by-side in matching frames.

Have no chance on the shop but got one (RED) from flippers on ebay .... (big fan of RUN DMC )

I missed the Beastie Boy release by Shep as well. Although, I was fortunate to have caught the Beastie’s and Talib Kweli in San Fran back in 2004 I think it was. Good times. Still can’t believe we lossed MCA several years ago. Such a legend.

If you haven't seen it yet, the Beastie Boys documentary on AppleTV+ is really good. Just watched it over the weekend.

Bert Green Fine Art and Aardvark Letterpress are pleased to announce the release of a limited edition print by Shepard Fairey, “Welcome Visitors.” This is a four-color letterpress print, printed by the master printers at Aardvark Letterpress in Los Angeles. It is the second print in the Aardvark Letterpress 50th Anniversary Prints Series.


I’ve been working with Aardvark Letterpress based in the MacArthur Park area of L.A. for many years, and they have always done great work. Aardvark has even done special projects with me, live printing at my Damaged art show and at an arts charity event in Miami. Letterpress is a very special traditional and beautiful printing process that is slowly fading, as other forms of printing and digital tech replace it. The charm of letterpress is that the raised relief plate is inked and then stamped into the paper leaving both the ink on the paper and a physical impression in the paper. The additional dimension and texture from letterpress give the technique a sublime elegance.

I’ve known Cary Ocon and crew from Aardvark for a while. Still, until Cary asked me if I’d be willing to do a limited print to commemorate Aardvark’s 50th anniversary, I didn’t know much about the print shop’s history. It turns out that Cary’s dad emigrated from Mexico and met his American mom, starting the letterpress business shortly after. Aardvark has been the family business with three Ocon generations working there. Cary loved the idea of “Welcome Visitors” as an image which related to the family history and aspirations for the American dream.

Like all businesses, Aardvark has been hit hard by Covid, so the “Welcome Visitors” letterpress is more than just a print marking an an important anniversary, but also a fundraiser to preserve an L.A. institution who are purveyors of a very special art form and craft. In fact I'm a bit disappointed by the reuse of the image for the third time and also the price/edition which seems a bit too pricey imho (which, by the way, might take the flippers away....), but it's honestly one of its best images and this letterpress version looks really good...

I agree, as I said the image is one of his best (although I'd prefer them not to be reused, not even for large formats) and the technique is much more complex and expensive than a screenprint (here a video).

That said, comparing to the typical price/print size/edition size by Fairey I still consider this a bit too pricey....and that's confirmed by the number of prints for sale on ebay, just a few...it was definitely not for flippers, most of them went to the collectors and I think this might be one of his most sought after prints in the future (but I'm not very good at this usually ).
