I guess they simply deleted any address that wasn't a real name, or at least looked like proper words...  not just letters and numbers, and all very similar looking.

Wonder how they determine an address entered by a BOT to that of what entered by a human? Bet plenty of people will of been deleted in error!

5,000,000 is pretty epic though, must of taken Shep ages to go through that lot with a pen picking out dodgy ones

It's a lot easier to do a draw of 20 or 30 people and check those…..

Filtering 5M emails (even with IP and time stamp of submissions) would take 10-20 mins of coding and a few minutes of running time (divided by the number of cores if parallelised).
Given the ratio, the probability of picking one non bot email in a draw is about 2.4%, so tons of draws needed to get to 45 good ones. Also, this is an algorithm more messy to parallelise.
Baseline: the pre-filtering is easily more efficient computation wise.
