Stanley Donwood | The Contagion of New TroyLinoprint on Somerset Satin 300gsm paper with deckled edges 50 cm x 70 cm Edition of 100 signed and numbered by the artist Stanley Donwood is no stranger to the art of relief printmaking, having utilised the process to great effect when creating the artwork for the cover of Eraser, the solo album from Radiohead's Thom Yorke, as well as his earlier series of classic London Views, and has returned to the lino cut method to create the original artwork for a brand new edition, The Contagion of New Troy, printed and published by Lazarides Editions.
Relief printmaking is the oldest form of the many print processes used today, and is embedded with a rich and diverse history dating as far back as 4000 B.C. Over time, the method developed and spread throughout the world from China to Japan, and eventually to Europe, where it's now divided into three main areas: woodcut, wood engraving, and linoleum cut. In all instances, the image is created by the artist cutting away or carving marks out of the material's surface. When inked with a hard roller, only the top surface of the block picks up ink while the marks which have been removed stay white. A print impression is then taken by placing paper on top of the inked block and using a press to apply pressure.

I like it, don't love it for £250 Considering the work involved i,e. the hours and hours of creating the actual linocut, the inking process and printing each of the individual prints, all of which are pretty unique. Then are individually signed and numbered I think makes this well worth £250.00. Would love to buy that piece of linocut on its own. |
