Quick artist info:
Blek le Rat began painting in 1981 on the streets of Paris, drawing inspiration from the first graffiti that he saw during a trip to New York ten years prior, and adapting the American style to the architecture and social context of the French capital. The image that he chose to reproduce through stencils was that of the rat, which, for him, symbolized both freedom and the spread of art throughout the city as an invasion.

thomasmer i totally see what you mean...
The value and success of an artists is not based purely on the technique he adopts or develops. Together with Blek there are also other precursors of this movement in the early 80s, John Fekner, Richard Hambleton... they bridged the Graffiti movement with the Fluxus movement... Ben Vautier is another artist who has various influences for example... and Banksy certainly further pushed the whole movement forward closing the loop with those pioneers... so probably this is how such inter-dependency (that you refer to in the press) between the various artists is created and can be extended to the whole movement...
I use the words of Jacopo Perfetti (an art critic) to further add some thoughts :
โ[...] In the digital era, anyone is capable printing a monochromatic graphic, cutting it out, and making a stencil with which to stain the city walls. And so many have felt justified in doing so. But being an artist doesn't mean knowing how to make a piece of work, but rather knowing how to imagine it. The artist goes beyond the means of expression. Picasso was just as much of an artist with a pencil in hand as with a lamp, a block of clay, or a bicycle.
If an artist's success were measured in technical ability, he or she wouldn't be an artist, but rather a technician. The success of an artist, however, is measured in sensitivity, in the ability to see beyond what everyone else sees. Blek le Rat is often cited as being the inventor of the applied stencil in street art. But this is superficial and reductive. The stencil is a technique. What Blek le Rat really invented is a new way of making art. A method that is today at the peak of its artistic and commercial expression. Blek le Rat's innovation lies in his thinking, in having created immediate, dirty, irreverent art which reaches everyone because everyone has the right to experience it. And then thereโs a final element that defines Blek le Rat, starting with his first stencil in 1981 to his latest works: the propagandistic bent of his art. [...]โ

Some really nice pieces there, and sizeable as well. Am sure these will look fab
But prices are indeed a tad steep to say the least
That rat stencil at the end is quite cool and comparatively quite affordable !

Dont see much from Blek these days so had expected high prices. (Wish the man who walks had of been a print).
On a side note, Nick Walker's upcoming show at "The Quinn" has equally scary prices

For completeness, all stencils are signed and framed already.
They are fixed (and cannot be removed) between two plexy layers.
I attach an image below. The stencil is basically floating within the frame and the light projects the negative shadow of the stencil on the wall.
