Jean-Michel Basquiat 🇺🇸 Brooklyn, New York • Graffiti Art , by kfroms on Feb 3, 2014 15:13:33 GMT 1, Mr Fart, If you know any serious auction house that is willing to sell an original Basquiat drawing without an Estate certificate, please let me know. All the art i've sold have the respective COA or LOA. It is NOT my fault if the Basquiat Estate stopped authenticating Basquiat art. I contacted Mrs.Nosei who told me herself that there is no way to get any COA from them. And noone else will do it , and if they do , it's like it doesn't count. So i am offering this beautiful drawing with coa, because simply the Basquiat Estate stopped that. Instead of just complaining and complaining post after post, maybe you could be smarter to maybe take a look and grab a bargain. Many artworks without provenance, without coa, sell for bargains while they would sell for thousands or millions with the proper paperwork. So no, i am not looking for fools, for stupi people. I am looking for art collectors who appreciate art and that would be interested in a wise investment. If you do not wish to purchase such items, feel free to wait for the next Sotheby's auction, and pay 1-4m$ for a nice mixed media drawing. But stop dissing a new member so much for no reason. Your behavior doesn't mirror one of a serious art collector. My kindest regards I am a bit thick so please help me:
how is something a "wise" investment if there is no chance for a COA? To me that sounds like a rather stupid investment ( and that has nothing to do with the price )

So i am offering this beautiful drawing with coa, because simply the Basquiat Estate stopped that. Forget the COA. A work that was produced during the Reagan administration should have a very clear and verifiable provenance. This is doubly true for an artist who was very famous throughout the majority of his career. Everyone who owned this would have known it was something special. The fact that it's not already in a museum or in the hands of a major collector makes it immediately suspect. Why didn't previous owners have it authenticated (before 2012)? Why didn't previous owners have provenance? Why do you believe that it's real, besides the word of the seller?
Unlike the COA, not having a provenance IS YOUR FAULT. A piece of modern art purchased without it will be, as a default, considered a forgery, and with good reason. Taking someone's word that a piece is real just doesn't fly. I'd put the fair value of your drawing at around $100.

lovedrive21 - If you truly feel that is not the case, then my advice to you would be to go see Jeffrey Deitch or Tony Shafrazi and cut to the chase.
If they won't touch it you probably have a real issue.

This is the crucial question, that I don't think has been answered. Let's not assume it has no provenance at all, until that's what the seller says. I know it has no coa, and why. Does it have any provenance at all?

It had no COA either, but looked legit to me so the six figure fee was a bargain..... Hold on, it's on the BBC news now..... . . . . Bugger!

On top of that, the range of prices for Basquiat drawing is huge. Price range from low $10ks to mid 6 figures all depending on size and quality. (and I've seen & been offered really ugly ones with full prov & COA)
Top auctions houses wouldn't disregard a work just because there is no cert or even perfect prov (especially if they know there is no active committee anymore). They would definately do their due dilligence unless it is really shady. They wouldn't pass on a large possible settlement that easily

If your serious you will know what it's worth and what your willing to spend Simples I agree- you're dead right to get the plebs to toe the line. How dare they clog up your inbox asking the price of the item you're selling. It's a great idea to keep the price a secret- I wish Tescos would do the same- imagine the excitement when you're standing at the checkout watching the price creep up, knowing you only had 20 quid in your pocket. Exhilarating.

But using the same logic, if you know what it's worth then you should just name your price...

Good luck with the sale Dr Jimmy is a good chap to deal with. (Even if he does get a bit of stick on the forum)

Jean-Michel Basquiat 🇺🇸 Brooklyn, New York • Graffiti Art , by bullysonzx10r on Apr 26, 2014 2:34:45 GMT 1, If it's the version of 85, the last I've seen sold was for $25K (US) from a Gallery. Several are available here in the states for $35K, again, at galleries. There is a private sale through Phillips of this piece on the 28th with an estimate of $25K-$35K.
Do note that if this is the same as what I'm referring to, it was pressed in 2001, and has never been touched by Basquiat, unlike some litho's that have hand finishing.
Regardless, this is an AMAZING piece, on of my favorite pieces ever, and if I had the $25K in hand, I'd be making a serious cash offer.

Jean-Michel Basquiat 🇺🇸 Brooklyn, New York • Graffiti Art , by dreadnatty on May 6, 2014 18:34:07 GMT 1, Rare Basquiat Drawings Being Shown at Upper East Side Gallery www.dnainfo.com/new-york/20140501/upper-east-side/rare-basquiat-drawings-being-shown-at-upper-east-side-gallery/
UPPER EAST SIDE — A new exhibit featuring artist Jean-Michel Basquiat will present some of the artist’s lesser-known works.
Acquavella Galleries on East 79th Street will host an exhibit of Basquiat’s drawings, including some of his earliest works. The exhibit runs from May 1 to June 13 and includes 22 drawings and two paintings, all from the collection of Herbert and Lenore Schorr.
The Schorrs were some of Basquiat’s earliest supporters. They began collecting his pieces in 1981, before the artist’s first solo New York exhibition. In addition to acquiring several paintings that are now recognized as some of Basquiat’s most important works, the Schorrs also sought out the artist’s drawings, something that set them apart from many early collectors according to the exhibit’s curator.
“The Schorrs astutely understood that working on paper was equally central to his practice as painting on canvas,” exhibit curator Fred Hoffman said in a statement. “Their collection demonstrates both the focus and ambition that the artist invested in the medium of drawing.”
Drawing was an essential part of Basquiat’s output. From 1980 to 1988, during his prime years, Basquiat created almost 1,000 drawings, according to the gallery. Like his paintings, many of his drawings challenge flawed power structures and fundamental failings in society such as racism and poverty.
Basquiat's career started in obscurity, then rose to meteoric heights before his death.
“We had so much confidence in him from the beginning and couldn’t understand why other people couldn’t see it,” Lenore Schorr said in a statment. “A wonderful exhibition that he did at Fun Gallery in 1983 didn’t receive a single review and we were the only ones to buy a painting.”
By the mid-80s Basquiat’s career had taken off and he was showing his painting at international galleries and museums. His career was cut short when he died in 1988 of a heroin overdose. He was 27 at the time.
In 2005, the Brooklyn Museum presented a retrospective of Basquiat’s work, which was co-curated by Hoffman.
The Acquavella exhibit marks the first time that works from the Schorrs collection will be on display. Many of the pieces have never before been seen by the public.

Same here I knew a little about his work and read he was roughing it in New York, a good insight into the whole scene in New York and that he was from a middle class family and so well read. His 'mates' taking work and auctioning it. Good honest interviews from him also.
It run through the heroin abuse obviously but he must have been constantly doing lots of amphetimines to produce that amount of work with all the partying he did.
