Napalm back from framers - disappointment, by joecool91 on Aug 2, 2015 15:48:19 GMT 1, Just as some background I have been saving to own a banksy since I started this hobby - I don't make a huge amount of money but finally saved up enough for an unsigned taking into account the own art scheme and I went for Napalm through own art.
Considered going for mister frameman cause of all the good reviews but was nervous about sending it down south seen as I live in Scotland so I went to my usual framer here in Glasgow that is also guild commended framer. I waited a week and went to pick it up yesterday and everything looked good but when I got home, unwrapped and inspected further I noticed a dirty mark on the print (see pic 2 below) which was not there before framing. Although it can't be seen from a meter away I'm so annoyed that something I've saved up for and waited for for so long is now not mint and now every time I look at it my eyes move to the mark rather than the print.
rant over.

Napalm back from framers - disappointment, by dotdot on Aug 2, 2015 16:36:45 GMT 1, jc not ideal.
if the mark was not there before work commenced then you need images to prove it.
assuming you have that - take hi res images and have a restorer advise on price to resolve ( <100 uk) then advise orig framer (of cost and ask them to pay it..) - have them make the call.
if they are unwilling to take the hit - advise them of proceeding at small claims against them - along with reputational damage - they'll fork.
mistakes and damage do happen - framers generally do not wish to 'say no' they'll be keen on keeping your business which you of course will advise them - you're otherwise happy with... (right?)
btw - refrain from having framer resolve issue - they make not be able to - in the way that.. a restorer CAN.
I've said this before - framers generally are not restorers - in some cases the two do not get along .. one creating work for the other.
let us know how you get on ... cheers

Napalm back from framers - disappointment, by Happy Go Lucky Chap on Aug 2, 2015 16:49:41 GMT 1, I have used a white eraser in the past to remove little smudge marks....that said, my heart would be in my mouth attempting this on a Banksy

Napalm back from framers - disappointment, by Deleted on Aug 2, 2015 16:54:03 GMT 1, In addition to what dotdot says, I assume that you'll have photos supplied to you by the previous owner which will indicate that the print was clean when you took it in?
I would suggest taking it back in, along with evidence of its previous state and ask them for a solution, at their expense. I would however reject any offer that involves them working on it as I can see a bottle of tippex coming out.
The other thing I would consider is how the print was attached to the mount, especially if they've been so blasรฉ about how it's been returned to you. Inotherwords, are you confident they've used acid-free tape?

Napalm back from framers - disappointment, by joecool91 on Aug 2, 2015 17:17:10 GMT 1, Firstly, thanks for the suggestions guys - if I was discussing this with anyone else apart from Banksy lovers I'm sure their response would be that I'm over reacting about a mark that's not even on the main print image.
I know that the mark happened during framing as I inspected the print myself when it came in from hang-up gallery and then had a clear view of it again when we opened it up in the frame shop to be measured. Sadly I don't have any proof yet as I didn't take any pictures before having it framed up so the plan is to ask hang-up if they possible had any images of it to sent to buyers before I purchased. If not then I assume I'm screwed

good luck..

Napalm back from framers - disappointment, by Black Apple Art on Aug 2, 2015 20:30:05 GMT 1, Sorry to hear that Is it definitely on the print and not the glass? Agree with Aza that in your picture it looks to be a smudge on the inside of the glass and shadows being cast on the print but either way can be fixed. Only difference is if it truly is a mark on the print make sure to go to a reputable restoration house like www.johnjones.co.uk/ to fix it. While superficial dirt and marks on prints may look simple to remove there can be irreversible damage to the print if not done properly. If truly the fault of the framer of course they will push to fix themselves even if not qualified so make sure to take charge of the process and do what YOU deem to be the proper course of action. Feel free to PM any further developments or questions always happy to help.

Thanks mate - Double checked and it's definitely a dirt mark on the print - although faint it looks like the colour of rust so possibly came off some of their equipment maybe a measuring tape while they were measuring it or something?
I've messaged Hang-Up to see if they have a picture of the print before they sold it to me so fingers crossed. If I manage to get one I'll get the ball rolling and I think the consensus is to not let them get involved in the restoration which I agree with.
It annoys me the fact that they never mentioned it to me and tried to get away with it though. I'll def give you a shout if I can get to the stage of restoration!
