Rationalising dishonest behaviour is a pretty simple exercise. The self-serving justifications won't always be convincing, but there are certainly plenty to choose from. All that's required is a bit of imagination. Raskolnikov himself came up with arguably credible reasons for murdering and stealing from Alyona Ivanovna.
However, the mental gymnastics become trickier in some situations. This is the case if we've previously made ethics-based comments which leave us exposed to accusations of applying double standards when it suits us, i.e. whenever it's in our selfish interest. Being amoral is more comfortable than being a hypocrite โ because the latter places us in an unpleasant state of cognitive dissonance.
_________
So the following question is especially for members and moderators who've criticised the removal and sale of street pieces in the past, and who are remaining silent in this 'In search of' thread:
Consider the activity openly taking place here. What we have is trade in stolen goods being facilitated by the Urban Art Association.
Now, in what way is this scenario any more defensible than posts by chancing thieves advertising the sale of stolen street art?

Because it was Dismaland and there were no rules. I won loads of bling but when they decided not to give it to me I just took it when their back was turned! And then gave it away to some girl on the dance floor ha

BANKSY "Dismaland" in Weston-super-Mare, by met on Feb 10, 2018 5:22:36 GMT 1, [...] [...] So the following question is especially for members and moderators who've criticised the removal and sale of street pieces in the past, and who are remaining silent in this 'In search of' thread: Consider the activity openly taking place here. What we have is trade in stolen goods being facilitated by the Urb an Art Ass ociation. Now, in what way is this scenario any more defensible than posts by chancing thieves advertising the sale of stolen str eet art? Because it was Dismaland and there were no rules. I won loads of bling but when they decided not to give it to me I just took it when their back was turned! And then gave it away to some girl on the dance floor ha
That position can indeed be argued, although from my perspective it raises two difficulties:
1. A "no rules" stance is only credible when there's some consensus between the relevant parties.
Dismaland could for example have announced it had an "anything goes" policy. That each visitor could do exactly as they pleased. Like vandalising the installations, assaulting the staff, or stealing the artwork and parts of the attractions.
But this wasn't the case โ at least not with respect to the ducks, which were in constant use and required for the Hook-A-Duck game. That hand-painted sign offers express confirmation. It pretty much says, "Please do not be a selfish prat by stealing from us. Because it fucks things up for other visitors who wish to participate."
[The fact there was an actual need to display the sign is rather tragic in itself. It brings to mind notices on buses or the tube which state the bleeding obvious โ where people have to be told to give up their seats for elderly or pregnant passengers.]
2. Yes, we could in theory try to defend a "no rules" stance in relation to what was clearly private property at Dismaland. It would help legitimise the selling on this forum of random items (including the ducks) nicked from the organisers of that remarkable exhibition.
However, if we do embrace such a position, then it can also be used (and perhaps more convincingly) regarding street art pieces. To illustrate, if I were ripping down works in East London and selling them here, I'd be throwing your argument straight back at you: "The streets have no rules. And even if they did, there'd be fewer rules in public streets than at a ticketed event like Dismaland."
So my original question remains: In what way is advertising to buy stolen private property any more defensible than posts by chancing thieves advertising the sale of stolen street art?

You are over thinking. Your two points contradict each other.
And The no steal sign was a piece of art. Not an actually sign.

BANKSY "Dismaland" in Weston-super-Mare, by settingson on Mar 11, 2018 20:46:28 GMT 1, I seem to remember this guy was selling just after Dismaland took place, I bought 2 from him at the time and they seemed ok to me. Was a strange one as he never sells anything else remotely similar to these or any other art related items. My thoughts at the time was that he had somehow acquired a box of them and he has sold them steadily since. Couldn't tell you if mine were actually fake or not as didn't have a comparison but he was definitely selling around the time of Dismaland which seemed a little early for copies to be popping up. My little tale doesn't really confirm anything unfortunately but thought it may be of interest

BANKSY "Dismaland" in Weston-super-Mare, by sleazus1slord on Mar 11, 2018 21:40:50 GMT 1, There's a lot of Darren Cullen stuff too. The pocket money payday loans for kids set has a tshirt, poster, and play money. A join the military fold out poster, stickers, postcards, buttons, etc.
Jimmy Cauty's model village pamphlet guide, he also did a run of riot shields for dland. Could also buy miniatures from the model village for a short while, those look pretty cool in the glass dome display cases.
There were sprayed canvases with the dland logo available the first weekend, they've been knocked off 1000 ways from sunday.
I got a few banksy stamped american depress cards that were claimed to have been found at dismaland the second week it was open.
There's a signed numbered run(150) of the james joyce 'Here for a good time, not a long time' image that adorns the program cover.
Sellers on thabay with stamped bills, canvases they bought outside the park from a homeless looking guy for 40 quid, or anything with a coa is completely bunk. The only provenance for anything bought in the store is a receipt, not unlike the hotel.

You're a really 'cool guy' thanks for blessing me with this thoughtless murmur.
I've been painting trains more days than you have posts on this forum.

Train painting aside, he is correct about the canvas and cards. I was there for the vip night and 100% no logo canvass were in the shop. There was a influx of 'dropped' stuff left around the venue that was left by other artists, possibly the same ones that were painting banksy type works outside and sending the images to the wsm gazette.. or what ever the local paper is called.

You're a really 'cool guy' thanks for blessing me with this thoughtless murmur. I've been painting trains more days than you have posts on this forum. Who the fuck paints trains in 2018

BANKSY "Dismaland" in Weston-super-Mare, by overend on Mar 12, 2018 12:08:32 GMT 1, Thanks for the list Romulus. Couple of things spring to mind but apologies if I missed them on your list.
Banksy - Cinderella coach photo with guest or a few blanks
Tip the Anvil - Seem to recall there was a Shrigley badge as well as a band?
Paul Insect/Bast - Did they do the stuffed bears that were in the shop?
