Jeff Koons 🇺🇸 Balloon Dog • Sculpture • Art For Sale, by artstylee on Nov 18, 2009 14:43:44 GMT 1, silky knows what I'm talking about.
Just don't single me out because I'm younger and happen to care about seeing art in the flesh. (seriously I wasn't even walking faster than other gallery goers - was extremely surprised when I got stopped - second time I felt like a lepur)
banksy and hirst (during bono's charity auction) would be bummed to hear gagosians security is gripping young gallery going crowd for no good reason. maybee it's a new thing. hopefully it's something that'll never happen again.
go urban art. koons is still great. gagosian securtiy is just doing too much.
Getty museum security is the tighest I've ever experienced(cant even get your face 1-2 feet from the artworks before security tells you to back up) but even they'd excort/kick you out long before they'd put they're hands on you. The pathetic part is that the gagosian security guard thought he was making a difference. When, at the end of the day, I still got to see what I wanted to see,... he just wanted to flex what minor authority/power he had. just took it too far.

These days you cant judge people just by how they look or dress, so staff in all businesses need to treat everyone the same.
Earlier this year we went to look in the Coskan Gallery in London and got turned away being told its appointment only I mean thats ok if thats how they think its best to run a business, but they way it was done not good PR.

Jeff Koons 🇺🇸 Balloon Dog • Sculpture • Art For Sale, by nex on Nov 18, 2009 16:10:38 GMT 1, Unfortunately that is simply the art culture. Perhaps it was the way you were dressed? Gagosian hires security guards to protect HIS works (because they are all Gagosian's responsibility before they are sold). Considering that people on this forum are so touchy about preserving their own art (the combined likes of which might not equal the $20 million or so that the entire Koons show was worth), don't you think it's really not too much to expect security guards? My advice, don't go to openings to look at art. Go to openings to drink for free, do drugs, hit on beautiful women, and try to get laid. You are just there for the party and you are no better than all of those "aging fake hipsters" that you spoke of. The art will be there for everyone to enjoy for another few weeks. I'm sure there is a Saturday afternoon you could have the gallery to yourself to enjoy.

Couldnt agree with you more. Saw some pictures because i was curious to see some new work by Koon. Total let down. The Scribble is wack and looks like i can do it

Jeff Koons 🇺🇸 Balloon Dog • Sculpture • Art For Sale, by jamesreeve5 on Nov 18, 2009 17:49:26 GMT 1, James from LA you don't know what you're talking about. Perhaps it's because I've actually lifted a weight or worked out in the last year that they thought I was there to mash up paintings. Tell me not to go upstairs and wait is fine, but there is no need to physically touch me in order to stop my progression up the stairs. One time okay I can deal with that- two times is way out of line. As I said before there were "No Free Drinks" if that's what you go to shows for. How much is a bottle of liquor or a drink? you broke fool. I was driving and couldn't drink anyways. You're correct, I'm not better or worse than those "aging hipsters" it's about fair treatment no matter who you are. and the reality is that I wasnt't treated fairly. And certainly wasn't wearing anything to stand out. Don't post just to get your post numbers up - especially when you identify with/& defend the "aging hipsters" I mentioned above. a pity. go do your drugs you loser.
No free drinks? Glad I decided to skip the opening then. I'll probably catch it this weekend, though I doubt I'll have to deal with security guards.
I could understand how you would be so offended as to call me a drug using loser who doesn't know what he's talking about, but the truth is I know what I'm talking about than more you. I've worked in expensive commercial galleries, and I have given similar directions to security guards (about only letting certain people into certain places). They are there to protect the art, and they are under immense pressure. For one reason or another, he saw you as a liability and decided to not let you upstairs. Instead of asking him "WHY" you weren't allowed upstairs, you try and weasel your way in a second time, which is when the escalated confrontation began. It would be interesting to hear his side of the story.
Secondly, Gagosian is a private gallery, not a museum. They do not owe you the right to go anywhere you want in their place of business. Even at LACMA or the Getty, you can't just waltz into their archives or storage areas, it is not your right to do so.
Also, refuse to buy from him all you want... take you bucket away from the ocean that is Gagosian. This forum does not represent the future of art collecting in any way whatsoever, street art as a whole is just a tiny blip on the contemporary art scene map, and those involved with it won't be running the contemporary art scene in 10 - 20 years.
I don't post simply to get my numbers up, nor am I defending anyone (except for maybe the security guard, since he's not here to defend himself). It just seems like you are really naive about the contemporary art world, and I was simply offering an explanation for your predicament.
I myself am just an urchin in the scene, but I find that when I'm forthcoming about my low status, but enthusiastic about collecting, I get a much warmer response. I however, do not assume that I should be treated equally to other collectors, nor do I try and overstep my bounds with galleries. People with similar collecting habits to me, like Mose and Snausages, tend to behave in a similar way when dealing with large commercial galleries. And look at the luck Snausages has had in dealing with Gagosian!
Case-in-point, you went to a gallery opening, professing only to be interested in the art. If you were just going to look at art, why didn't you go and look at the pieces sometime in the 6 weeks that they'll be up for?
I just think that your one-sided story about "mistreatment at the hands of Gagosian" came off as whiny, and ignorant to the larger inner-workings of the commercial gallery system.

Jeff Koons 🇺🇸 Balloon Dog • Sculpture • Art For Sale, by artstylee on Nov 18, 2009 23:00:06 GMT 1, Facts are the facts - James from LA you're a douche. who's clearly offended by the "aging hipsters" comment. If the fact that I honed in on your drug use is offending you, sorry.
And the fact is that you said you do drugs at gallery openings. which makes you a clown. Which is also why you were speaking of your experiences as a gallery worker in the past tense -> when you said you've worked for "Expensive galleries - & delt out orders". Because really who would want to keep a drug using loser on staff.
See you're just like or are one of the a**holes I'm talking about. Everybody else can just walk up the stairs to view the continuation of the exhibition, but when I casually walk towards the stairs it's "weaseling" my way up the stairs. I get it your sh*t don't stink and everybody else is benieth you.
Also I understand it's a private establishment but the reality is that they had a huge sign which essentially tells any gallery goer to go up the stairs. Don't put a huge sign up encouraging gallery goers to go upstairs if it's really not okay to make that move. It's like if there was a Large Sign saying to all gallery goers that the bathroom is this way with an arrow pointing towards it, but once you get to the bathroom only selected people can get into the bathroom the sign was promoting. you'd be like "wtf I thought I can go to the bathroom here because the sign says so". Private gallery or not that logic doesn't make sense. They should Take the sign down and simply whisper to their pricky buddies to come upstairs if that the hush hush exclusivity they want for their upstairs area.
Fact is that there's a sign telling you to go upstairs to see the rest of the exhibition,... but I was singled out as the one not being allowed to follow the signs orders.
Get gripped up yourself and then talk. Private gallery or not it's not okay to grab first.
As I stated I waited 10-15 minutes from the first attept until(12 people came down from upstairs) the hallway/corridor/staircase was completely opened except for 2 people who got to go upstairs. I was the exception who wasn't allowed. And you don't think I asked "why"- that was the first thing I said to him- at which time wouldn't say anything to respond just say wait(maybee he was lonely and wanted company), but At that point I really didn't know if I was (or anyone normal) was allowed to go upstairs to view the work. and almost left. But I didn't come to see half of a body of work.
Francis ford copola says in regards to drug users "they just have a complete inability to tell the truth... it's not their fault though" so while you might know what your talking about to some extent, you've gotta work through a clouded mind to spit out what you believe it the truth - which is actually a bunch of BS.
Defending your drug use supporting your position with stating that you worked for a gallery at one point is a weak point.
go wipe up your tears with your closet full of ed hardy shirts you "drug using/aging fake hipster clown" - well if the shoe fits...

JSG knows what I'm talking about, I think jeff koons and all artist would agree with that statement.
street art is free for everybody(often out of the artists pocket in the name of artistic expression). gagosian gallery art is for bono, steve martin, larry gagosian and his friends.
I heard they had a monopoly but this type of thuggish security treatment kind of proves/confirm what everybody says about larry gagosian(like that email letter - that got leaked -where he sent an email/letter to his employees saying essentially you're going to get fired really soon if you do produce sales).
I like the paintings from their artists, but can't support that scene in the slightest.

Sure, grabbing may be going too far, I'd suggest telling the people at the desk how you feel about being manhandled.
Trust me, everyone there that day was a "normal" as you call it. The "non normals" or major collectors, vips, etc. have all already seen all the work at a private viewing just for them.
The fact that you are making a HUGE deal out of this, get so worked up, and write massive diatribes about elite galleries vs. the masses, and then start throwing around insults, expletives and very angry sentiment towards people who challenge your experience kind of gives us a clue to how you handled this situation with the guard and how it escalated to being something much bigger than it was.
It sounds like you were already convinced that you were going to be treated like a "normal" and when this very minor incident occurred, you overreacted because it confirmed your suspicions and you responded in what sounds like a defensive, passive aggressive way. Sounds to me like you were making up these suspicions in your head that he wasn't going to allow you upstairs because you were a "normal" but I highly doubt that. If you waited patiently and didn't get suspicious I'm sure everything would have passed without incident.
Look, I understand where you're coming from, but I'm pretty sure you're making a lot more out of this than you should. You really need to let go of these preconceptions that they treat people differently at Gagosian. Unless you went in looking like a total vandal, then I could understand. But I honestly have never ever seen anyone get singled out like you claim at Gagosian the many times I've been.

Please tell me you said the famous words "Do you know who i am"?? ;D
that would have been great. wish I could have pulled that card or wish was steve martin's son/nephew so I could have got him fired on the spot. while I have family friends that are some important peeps, I'm not special enough to pull that card just yet.
The reality is that I could have very well been somebody important's kid(dressed down to be ironic) and he would have f'ed up big time.
Just like if you're trying to turn a stripper/hoe into a housewife, that security guard is eventually bound to do something crazy, really a major liability.

The reality is that I could have very well been somebody important's kid(dressed down to be ironic) and he would have f'ed up big time. Just like if you're trying to turn a stripper/hoe into a housewife, that security guard is eventually bound to do something crazy, really a major liability.

Jeff Koons 🇺🇸 Balloon Dog • Sculpture • Art For Sale, by artstylee on Nov 19, 2009 0:09:32 GMT 1, Get gripped up yourself and then talk. Private gallery or not it's not okay to grab first. But I honestly have never ever seen anyone get singled out like you claim at Gagosian the many times I've been.
good idea, go in and get myself banned from future shows -
(that's implying that there is going to be a show special enough to bring me back into that place). The gallery should do invite only, or high end collectors only.
Just a bit confusing when it's promoted like a show you can attend if you've an average person, but in actuality "anybody" can't just go see the show without encountering problems. I Went to see art, and didn't intend on having any interaction with security, this one security guard just takes his job too seriously" I understand it's "important/expensive" art but don't promote the show to eveyone if you don't really want everyone in there. Worst gallery going experience ever provided by the gagosian gallery LA.

Snausages speaks the truth here. I think you've got anger issues artstylee. I don't exactly see how you pinned me as a drug user either. Although, I think you should take a chill pill.

Jeff Koons 🇺🇸 Balloon Dog • Sculpture • Art For Sale, by krevice on Nov 19, 2009 9:09:28 GMT 1, I went to the same show and agree with artstylee here... The same security guard at the base of the stairs grabbed me as I attempted to go upstairs not once but twice. That treatment should only be allotted to the staple LA vagrant infiltrating a show for the free booze.
