FS: Early Charming Baker "The Unfathomable Distance...", by seliger07 on May 27, 2015 22:41:20 GMT 1, For sale is one of four images from Baker's first US show in Los Angeles (Pour Me Some Smoke, a group exhibition at Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art (LA), November 2008). I offered the complete set of 4 prints a while back with no success. I broke up the set and eventually sold 3 of the 4. This is the last print I have from the set.
ASKING: $2,250 USD (~1,465 GBP - dependent on FX rate). Price includes shipping. Print will be delivered via a packing tube. Prefer to sell domestically, but would consider an international sale.
Title: "The Unfathomable Distance of Proximity" Giclee on Entrada/Moab 100% Cotton Rag 320g Condition: Excellent Size: 42” x 35” Unframed and stored flat Edition: 1 of 16 Print is signed, numbered (1/16), and embossed with a poodle logo and "Charming Baker Nice Print"
Provenance: One owner. Print was purchased directly from Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art. A certificate of provenance from the gallery is available.
Videos • Preview of the Pour Me Some Smoke LA show can be found on YouTube (search "Charming Baker Carmichael"). The video features the original oil on linen piece for “The Unfathomable Distance of Proximity” in the show.
Notes In the film titled As a Gorilla (featured on Charming Baker’s website), his son comments on the tiger depicted in “Unusual and Electric”. The tiger is a prominent character in some of Baker’s other works including "The Unfathomable Distance of Proximity" and “Love Paves the Way to Decay”. In “The Unfathomable Distance of Proximity”, the viewer cannot help but imagine the song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” playing in the background. But Baker stops short of being a happy-ending-Disney-film by depicting an older gentleman who crawls cautiously around an animal that could potentially maul him to death. Or could it…..as a tiger cub? It is this combination of uncertainty and uncomfortableness that makes Baker’s works so engaging without giving you the obvious answer.
Thanks for looking. Feel free to PM me.

FS: Early Charming Baker "The Unfathomable Distance...", by iamzero on May 28, 2015 13:24:33 GMT 1, I love this set of images but remember not being that impressed with them up close. Quite a flat image that doesn't match the Jealous prints in depth.

I thought they were made in a hurry. I read somewhere that the prints for the LA show were not going to arrive in time from the UK. So Charming had these 4 printed in LA to have something for the show. (Used the printers that printed DFace UnAmerican G, and Shep's' large formats. Can't remember the name of the printers.) Have the ones that were printed in the UK seen the light of day?

FS: Early Charming Baker "The Unfathomable Distance...", by seliger07 on May 28, 2015 14:13:26 GMT 1, Otto: Thanks for the perspective. These 4 prints were definitely created in California. I purchased the prints in 2010 after seeing the Stupid Has a New Hero show in New York. Tim Fennell provided the pricing sheet. For the 4 prints from the LA show the pricing sheet states "Printed by Carmichael Gallery". The other prints (e.g., Half Pint NYC) for sale on the pricing sheet state "Printed by Jealous." The LA show featuring these 4 images was November 2008. I'm not sure if Baker even had a relationship with Jealous at that time. And so, the California printer may have been Baker's choice at the time and not necessarily as quick fix. I could be wrong.
iamzero: These are giclee prints. And so, you're right. The depth and layering that you may find on a print made through silkscreening is not apparent. However, the colors are sharp.

FS: Early Charming Baker "The Unfathomable Distance...", by skynet on May 28, 2015 17:29:27 GMT 1, These prints are beautiful up close and classic Baker. Of the set, it comes down to the image of the one you like best. As with most Baker works, they are rather quite large.

FS: Early Charming Baker "The Unfathomable Distance...", by seliger07 on May 28, 2015 17:49:29 GMT 1, skynet: Completely agree. Classic Baker. Baker has always made beautifully arranged compositions - space, perspective, details. Lately, his prints seem to be only that - beautiful images. I have always been a fan of the earlier pieces which are beautiful AND in many cases cause a "WTF?" response. They're a bit more provocative. I know you're a fan of this set especially "The Universal Principle Accepts No Responsibility".

FS: Early Charming Baker "The Unfathomable Distance...", by iamzero on May 28, 2015 23:19:17 GMT 1, I prefer the uneasy feel of the early prints. For some reason I think the U.S. Prints were done by modern multiples?

FS: Early Charming Baker "The Unfathomable Distance...", by seliger07 on Jun 9, 2015 17:32:37 GMT 1, Included in the sale are three screenprints made by Jealous for the Stupid Has a New Hero show. The prints are similar to the ones in the YouTube video titled "Charming Baker Show Stupid Has a New Hero in New York" at 2:18 which direct visitors to various parts of the show.
Unlike the ones featured in the video, these are colored. Print 1: pink, green, silver. Print 2: blue, pink, silver. Print 3: black, gray, silver. Each print is embossed with the Jealous stamp and in very good condition (not mint as they were used in the show). The screen prints are sharp/vibrant and on thick paper. Thanks.

Same. However, $1,477 was a great price. I had to stop around $1100ish.
seliger, Good luck with your sale!
