Hello everyone,

I have recently decided I'd better get my collection insured, but I have no idea what anything is worth. I was wondering whether any of you out there could help me by giving me an idea if anything I have is worth insuring and how much for. I know it's a big ask, but I don't know how else to find out, none of it ever comes up on ebay. Big thanks in advance for any help you guys can give. Here is a list of what I have on the walls:

Banksy- Bomb Middle england (one of the 600 unsigned ones)
Pulp Fiction (600 unsigned)
A signed Porno card from the first ever Santa's Ghetto upstairs in the Dragon Bar

Adam Neate - one of the Clown skate decks and a big original piece on plasterboard from the second Finders Keepers parties, about 1.5m by .3m, twin towers being hit and loads of other wierdness

Hello,

I've a picture that I would like to insure but am unsure of their replacement value. For Banksy prints it's a case of looking on eBay for the average price, however, for an original piece I've no idea where to start.

The picture is Nick Walker's Headless Astronaut Number 7 on card. I think it should be inured for more than £2k (which is why I need to settle on an insurance amount) but may be wrong.

Can anyone offer any advice on this matter?

you could ask an auction house for a valuation, though they would charge for a written valuation

....with Hiscox insurance you do not need to name items as they cover most things as part of the policy - they are not cheap however I have found them he best to deal with as far as claims and the added incentives included in there policys.

Hi G,

This may depend on what type of policy you have. A standard home insurance policy will have a low single item limit over which you will need to specify the item and provide a proof of value.

A specialist art insurance policy will be much more flexible. At the 2 -5k level a specialist policy will probably allow you to decide what value to insure it at. If a claim occurs it's up to you to prove to insurers the value of the loss, but as I said, if you have "proper" specialist cover they will probably have a very good understanding of the the market and should meet your own market valuation.

I have got Halifax home insurance, which is pretty cheap i have to say. I have a question to ask you all.

You don't need to specify hi risk items that fall under the £1,500 mark. I have recently acquired some pieces of art work that goes above this bracket. How do I go about getting a valuation on these pieces (preferably for free) to show proof if the worse would happen and they got damaged, stolen etc.

On another note, what is the process for insurance companies go through if something got damage, would you have to show proof of purchase? pics of the condition of the works and how do you show them that it is worth x amount in todays/yesterdays market.

Any info or help you could give would be great.

I'm currently thinking of taking up an insurance for my art collection. Mostly because of insuring during transportation. I've been sweating a bit recently from some transaction.

Anyway, I asked for a quote in France to few brokers but the prices they quote me were a joke.

I got quoted 2200 euros per year for all risk except & transportation insurance on a declared total value of 110 000 euros and a transportation limit of 60 000 euros.

A friend of mine in the US told me that he was paying 2600 euros for a coverage of $1 million on site & $250K during transportation which makes me think that the quote I got is a bit off.

If anyone has some contacts about that, let me know as I would probably would be interested!

murdock : mostly interested in the transportation feature that you can get only through getting a proper art insurance policy. I'm quite positive that you can only get such contract with a minimum declared value of 80 000 euros.

When I inquired about this exact type of questions, they said have a list with all the details and some pics identifiying the pieces 100% and in case of damage/loss they will reimburse you "for the value that you needed to buy the piece right now". The value will be determined by an appraiser, but having a know of the market and recent figures, will certainly help in the appraisal (e.g. you bought a CYW at source, but have ebay results showing that it is a bit more valuable now).

That being said, if you have pieces in your collection that go up in value, you might wantto have an eye on the amount that is covered in your policy.

On the other hand, just because you bought sth at an outrageous price probabaly doesn't mean that you will get that money back if the art "accidentally burns up" or sth

If you're in the UK iloveartinsurance / AXA seems to be the best option, or certainly was for me. The only down side is that it covers just art and so you need a separate policy to cover other home contents. You basically choose a category re. the value of your collection (£0-£50k, £50k-£100k etc) and then click buy. They advise you to keep a full list of your collection but do not ask you to specify what you own, which I found quite surprising. In the event of a loss, I believe you will however need to provide proof of ownership (COA, payment receipt).

My next best quote was a lot more than what I paid...

Basically it works like this. There are 2 different kind of insurance contracts :
- contracts with a declared value
- contracts with an agreed value

If you have an extensive collection with really expensive pieces, you should go for an agreed value. If I'm not mistaken (I talked to few insurance companies), the minimum amount of artwork to be insured in £50K in the UK (80 000 euros in other EU countries).

Basically, the agreed value works with an expert appraising everything in your collection and declaring a replacement value for each. It's considered to be the best contract as if anything happen to any of your pieces, the insurance company already know its replacement value and that it's authentic. But the drawback is that you really need to have a collection worth more than £50K and you'll also have to contact them everytime you buy something (not that flexible).

Other contract is to declare a value of your collection. It doesn't really matter how much it actually cost. For exemple, you can say that your collection is worth £50K with the most expensive piece costing £8K. Not need to prove when entering into the contract how much your collection is worth and you don't have to contact them whenever you buy or sell something. It's way more flexible than an agreed value contracts but it has some drawbacks too. You'll have to prove that the item is authentic and you'll have to prove its value. They usually advise to make an inventory and taking extensive photos to prove that you really own the piece but still can be tricky.

On top of that you can had some options like transportation, handling by others (e.g going to the framer or the restorer...),......

I contacted them as well but they told me that I should get in touch with a French insurer...

Transportation includes shipping as well. It's exactly when the piece is in transit somewhere. Between your house and the framers, via shipping courrier, from the gallery to your house....

The warranty stops when it hit a destination. For example, you send your CYW to the framer. Framer gets the piece and it gets lost or stolen. Hopefully, your framer has insurance but if he doesn't the insurance won't cover it either (you need to take another option which basically covers your artwork when someone else has it).

Insurance also covers when you have something with you that doesn't belongs to you but of which you're responsible!

good info, thanks. i'm trying to round up all COAs and take plenty of pics now...£250/year isn't that bad, i'm just nervous what the process will be if water drips down onto a banksy or something...who decides the value?
