Banksy VIP and AP Prints, by lee3 on Mar 8, 2016 17:53:16 GMT 1, You would be right. Seeing this thread piqued my curiosity and I asked them via artnet for kicks. The reply was 175,450 euro (~135k gbp) before any arm wrestling which is not a match I wish to engage. Looking at their site, they do have a supply of rare AP's though pricing is quite high.

Sounds about right as the Red are in excess of £80k now and gold seems to be the rarest and most sought after, or at least deemed so. Amazing how these prints are now at the level the canvases of the same image were not too long ago. Would be interesting to see a GWB original go at auction now.

If it's big in size, the sky's the limit imo. Not that anything is cheap with that composition but my eyes have always felt that one needs some room to breath. But, the edition 25 canvas and diptych versions are just 30 cm/sq which is limiting to my eyes. I speculate that is why the prints seem to do so well comparatively. I honestly can't remember the last time one of the little canvases came under the hammer and perhaps one would prove my theory wrong now? But the larger images on steel, sprays on back of prints and all the larger unique ones with some space between the girl and balloon would have shocking prices I suspect if they came to auction.

What do you think is the issue with the Sid vicious canvass that didn't sell at Christie's Lee? Just been flogged too many times? I was bidding on the Os Gemeos canvasses so noticed at 140k USD the banksy didn't sell.

Banksy VIP and AP Prints, by lee3 on Mar 8, 2016 20:18:54 GMT 1, Eschiff, you tell me? They certainly have been on the market repeatedly as you noted. A mentor told me many years ago "never consign to an off month sale." You narrow the audience by a wide margin and many of the people with more money than time are simply not paying attention unless it's NY May/Novemeber or London June/October. I was watching that sale and they either (probably) chandeliered or had a bid at $140 and nobody took it from there. I'm guessing the former as 150 would have resulted in a sale at $180 all in. The previous sales that I see for that image are $145, $122 and $110k all in so 180 would have been a considerable jump too. So probably a combination of timing and too high of an estimate. Regardless, the Os G and Kaws work did pretty well from memory.

Banksy VIP and AP Prints, by lifeonwalls on Mar 9, 2016 17:25:59 GMT 1, The auction house pulls the bid "from the chandelier " and not from any person in the room. Done to get the action started rather than just letting the opening bid sit there with no interest or to get to the reserve price.

Banksy VIP and AP Prints, by lee3 on Mar 9, 2016 18:27:18 GMT 1, kashi, life explained it. It's not a real bid; it's a manufactured bid and only the auction house would know the truth so pure speculation on my part. The auctioneer will state that they have a bid on the books which could be a true absentee bid or one made up by the house itself to lure others into bidding. It happens all the time so nothing to be alarmed about once you know it exists and what to look for. Chandelier bids can only occur up to the point right before the next bid would hit the reserve and is a good tactic for the house to use to generate a sale. The better houses use it sparingly, the lesser houses use it constantly. Given Banksy's popularity, I would expect to see most houses chandelier any of his works that don't have strong presale interest.

Banksy VIP and AP Prints, by gravity1 on Mar 9, 2016 19:05:17 GMT 1, lee3 ... can you explain 'chandeliering' to me please. I assume you mean the auction house had a bid already made outside the room at $140000 when you say 'had a bid'? I'm trying to learn the lingo, so much to learn. Thanks In any other industry it would be flat out fraud, but in the art world basically anything goes.

Agree, totally overpriced. If it was two grand cheaper I would have pulled the trigger.

Yeah the Os Gemeos - little prince - hammered for 80k the other for I think 60. Both well below gallery pricing even with Christies vig.

I think I'll pass it! As with all B pieces, "expensive" now and "wish I would have" in a year. For great entertainment I always like to brows the forum archive threads with members complaining about Banksy prints going for double retail shortly after drops or how outrageous it is for signed prints going for over £1k.
