Thanks so much for the report! Of course, to each his own, since those hand-embellished prints do nothing for me.
The Amory, in particular, suffers from the issue that I often find in his hand-embellished giclรฉes: the superficial paint obscures the signature loose brush work of the original image (and painting). Loose brush work on top of loose brush work: it can work, but here just looks messy.
As to the Pose: just don't think it works well with a border. His work should be full-bleed or nothing, IMO. And the additions visible in this print, while some play with the border, make too busy what is already a very busy composition.
Of course there are those who will disagree with all of this. So congrats to those who love these prints and managed to snag them in spite of the myriad challenges placed in your path yesterday!

The Color and the Fury 10 Years of Jonathan LeVine Prints!, by Oski on Feb 22, 2015 17:15:13 GMT 1, Great reception tonight in a much lower key way than the large shows of the 20-year Juxtapose and 10-year Wooster Collective retrospectives the last two years. Here are some pictures, starting with the wall of fame: Thanks so much for the report! Of course, to each his own, since those hand-embellished prints do nothing for me. So congrats to those who love these prints and managed to snag them in spite of the myriad challenges placed in your path yesterday! I get what you are saying, and I really enjoyed your thoughtful analysis (I wish more people would discuss art this way). I guess I should start off by stating that giclรฉes don't do anything for me, unless it's a reproduction of a photograph. Amory's work is characterized by the amount of facture in his brush work as you've identified, and a giclรฉe simply doesn't capture that effectively (hence my caveat of "in person" in my post). Amory applies so much paint onto the giclรฉe that the print essentially becomes a painting. Of course the addition of more paint on a reproduction of a painting (see below image of the original) obscures the original brush strokes. However if it were simply a print, one wouldn't experience the original brush strokes in light relief anyway (it's just flat). So the hand painting really brings the piece back to life for me.
Amory's work has a quality of hazily reconstructed memories, that seem to be melting away as they are being recalled. The fact that the hand finished print in this instance seems even more melted makes it more ephemeral and can even be interpreted as a fading memory of the original painting.
As for the Pose, yes I agree that it should've been full bleed, and the fact they didn't think this through was quite unfortunate. But here is why I think the hand finish is important for this piece, the spray and application of paint that invade the white borders represent Pose's tacit acknowledgement that the piece should go toward the edge.
All drivel aside, it also fundamentally comes down to my own personal bias of preferring the personal imprint of an artist onto the piece besides simply signing a reproduction, and by doing so, making it unique.

The Color and the Fury 10 Years of Jonathan LeVine Prints!, by Ottomatik on Feb 22, 2015 17:34:52 GMT 1, I think the POSE with the border looks just fine. His Rinse Repeat looks just fine with the border as well.
Complaining about the image not being 'full bleed' is just redonk. As always, IMHO.

That looks awesome. Arguing borders on a beautiful print is one of those 1st world problems.

His Rinse Repeat looks just fine with the border as well. Complaining about the image not being 'full bleed' is just redonk. As always, IMHO. I don't consider my opinion to have been a complaint, just an observation that informed my decision about whether to purchase the print or not. And compared to the image of 'Blot' and its full-bleed print job, 'Doll 3' doesn't measure up, IMHO. So I didn't buy it.
In any case, I decided to express my opinion. Oski was kind enough to appreciate that I was doing so from a good place and took the discussion to the next level in a thoughtful way. And remember that just because you add "IMHO" doesn't make your calling someone's opinion "redonk" okay.
Do try to be nice. What goes around comes around.
(And lest you think that "full-bleed" is some kind of "redonk" obsession of mine: I own many prints that I think work just fine with a border, including those by Miss Bugs.)

Unfortunately I feel the same, these images/prints look much better as a full bleed.
After learning that this was not going to be full bleed and also being printed in house vs. The same printer as "Blot' I was quit dissapointed, but since I had already waited in line for 6 hrs I purchased anyway.
"IMHO" this print does not come close to "blot" when displayed next to one another so although it is a nice print is looks like a print while "blot" looks close to an original on paper, for those wondering it is a nice print but lacks the color, Vibrancy, and POP! that "blot" delivers.
Had I known I prob would have taken my chances online instead. I feel the choice and execution of a print can significantly increase or decrease it's beauty and overall look.
Can you imagine a kaws print as a giclee or having a 1 l/2" border around it.

The Color and the Fury 10 Years of Jonathan LeVine Prints!, by honestcrooks on Feb 25, 2015 21:07:45 GMT 1, I am super thrilled that I got the Parra online Suprisingly still available am I the only parra fan around here? No you're not but i'm still debating if i'll take the risk to pay more than 100$ on customs feesโฆ Imagine, I had someone stand in line for me, just to be sure I'd have this print. For me, one of his most impressing prints in a very, very long time. New colors, nice composition, characters are there and the size is perfect. Framed, it will be around 85x85cm which will pop. A lot Don't care about the extra custom fees, this one is a keeper.
But yeah, I guess there are more EU fans than US fans for Parra. We're gonna check the Retrospective at Kunsthal with a bunch of people. Who knows, maybe we'll bump into some Instagram/board friends! :-)

Hey there, Fed! One could so that, but then you'd lose the signature and the number of the edition. But more importantly, I think Pose's stuff looks its best full-bleed and floated: in my opinion a far more impressive and appropriate presentation. His work is bold, in your face, with heaps of kinetic energy and I just think holding it back behind a mat would be less than ideal. Not a horror by any stretch, but certainly not my preference.

I heard they held back a few on release day so they could make sure they didn't oversell it, which was cool and smart. Some artists/galleries should take note. These must have been the hold backs. Lucky if you got one cause I think that's it, no mas, SOLD OUT.
