The Faile on the other hand, it's just depressing what that guy is trying to do. He buys it in 02' for nothing and keeps flogging it through auction houses after bonhams quoted him $14k for it. Well perhaps Bonham's isn't the best judge of pricing for this sort of thing...sad really.

There was no real top quality material in the sale to hook in buyers either, which makes me think that either they are having trouble attracting decent consignments, or they are holding material back for more appropriate sales. I think to be honest it's the former, Bonham's have never really been able to sell contemporary art well, and in a market like this the vendors go where they will get the most money, when it comes to original works that is Sotheby's, Christie's, and PdeP. Bonham's and the other smaller houses do well in boom times with hot ticket items because they thrive one the cast offs from the bigger houses, since the bigger houses now need the lower value original works to balance their bottom line the smaller houses lose out.

You think so? I concur that the Marilyn offered at Bonhams is one of the less desirable of the 10 from the complete portfolio but I think the estimate is fair even if that is in terrible condition (it looks fine to me on the flash piece but I haven't asked for a condition report). None of the Marilyn prints have been bought in for ages principally because it is Warhol's most desired multiple. The same image (though one that looks to the naked eye to be in far worse shape) sold for $32k back in May when the market was still struggling. But, Warhol came screaming back to life this past month and now prices for everything are up DRAMATICALLY in just a week. I don't think this will have any problem finding a buyer. Some recent sales (and this before 200 dollar bills brought Warhol speculation back with a fevered pitch) :

And when it comes to prints, they are way behind. In the London auctions, in terms of annual turnover for prints you have in order Christie's King Street, Sotheby's, Bloomsbury Auctions, Christie's South Kensington and then Bonham's. Xtie's King St. and Sotheby's switch place every now and then, the three after that have been in that order the past 5 years or there abouts. In the past 6 years Bonham's London have offered 49 Warhol prints, and sold fewer than 20 - they are going to struggle, plain and simple.
Will they sell it? Hmm maybe though I suspect not.

I think most would agree that Bonhams is 3rd and Pdp is 4th given that Bonhams does about 3X the revenue that Pdp does on average. However, to your point, Pdp certainly offer far better Warhol's than Bonhams which is something I've never understood to be honest. As to % sales with Warhol editions, do you think that is very important? I don't because personally I think many/most of his prints leave a lot to be desired. The Marilyn's are different in that they are the most desired and many are far more expensive than some of his drawings or canvases. In this case, I don't believe the house has to do much at all to sell that work- it sells itself.

Quite often auction houses will put there most expensive print (or most overpriced!?) on the front cover to give it the most exposure and best chance of it selling. Usually the front cover increases the chance of a work selling and generally it sells for more so I think the Marilyn was a little high. To be honest it was a small sale for what should be a big December sale; It is a tough time to get good consignemts though.

? You mean it was bid under estimate as it sold within the estimate range (40-60k). The estimte is a sale price and anyone bidding 34k knows that they're paying over 40 if they win, which they did in this case. Obviously the reserve was below the low estimate which is common these days.
