Can I but in here; I saw it this lunch time and thought it was stunning. Somewhat taken back by what it was painted on (cardboard) but a lovely piece, amazing colours...

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by hlarmy on Feb 5, 2008 16:35:40 GMT 1, Went along to the preview today. Bit of a mixed bunch really. Nice to see some older banksy canvasses in the flesh. Particularly liked the white laugh now canvas, although the big one is in pretty poor condition. Poor condition - I was amazed at how 'poor' the condition was? A reserve of Β£200k - Β£300k; given that the reserves seemed particularly low for most of the pieces (eg. Β£400 - Β£600 for Nick Walker's TMA - I wish!), what do you think this will fetch?

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by RBK on Feb 5, 2008 16:43:28 GMT 1, I think this auction is going to not make a difference one way or the other to our beloved 'genre'.
While there are some great pieces (Laugh Now, Neate, Kate Moss, Faile - London black & gold) the rest can easily be found on Ebay. Agree with Pezlow the Faile pieces are for the most part, poor.
Really shows the difference between a Sothebys auction.

If by large Neate you mean the gallery original (The Apprentice) then whilst it is very nice it was one of the weakest pieces in his show!!!

That must have been one hell of a show - I didn't have the pleasure...

Some deja vu from the last Sotheby's auction going on in my head.

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by seidbereit on Feb 5, 2008 16:57:49 GMT 1, Pezlow: I'm a bit curious (to say the least) about what you mean by "poor condition", can you elaborate for us please?
For me poor condition on a canvas would start somewhere around the "a bit grubby" mark, but I get the impression you mean something much worse, like torn or kicked-around poor. Thanks.

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by pezlow on Feb 5, 2008 17:04:42 GMT 1, The big laugh now is on wood. It has various chips and stuff in it, plus holes where bits have been taken off it, it's pretty dirty too. All of which is I guess unsurprising given that it has been up in a bar for years. You can see some of these marks and things on the photos on the bonhams site but they are much more pronounced in the flesh.
You could argue it gives the piece character. This is all well and good but once you start putting pieces like this in to a sale and want Β£200k for it, it takes the piss. IMO of course.

I don't think so either. Not a real strong inventory or well rounded roster overall. Still makes for a somewhat interesting auction though.

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by pezlow on Feb 5, 2008 17:13:15 GMT 1, Can anyone confirm that the hammer price gets increased by VAT (for us mortal residents) plus a 20% buyers premium plus possibly 4% on Artists retained rights fee, so you have to mentally figure paying a number 41.5% higher than the amount called by the auctioneer?
Not quite. You only pay VAT on the buyers commission, not on the cost price. So if a piece sells for Β£1000 the buyers commission is Β£200 and you pay Β£35 vat on that

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by turkey on Feb 5, 2008 17:55:04 GMT 1, If you can get up to have a quick look its well worth it to see everything in the flesh...I have to agree though that some of the pieces are in poor condition, holes, rips, dents etc, but what struck me most was the actual presentation, it looked as though they'd had a team of 5 year olds putting their hands all over the glass on nearly every piece....it left me wondering how much actual respect they have for 'Urban Art' they're selling

My first live auction so can't wait - popped down earlier this afternoon - apparently they're expecting a very good turnout. Will be very interesting IMO... ;D
