Is it derivative? Of course it is... But most "newish" contemporary art is... Good luck finding *original* ideas nowadays...

I would have loved to do "derivatives" of this... I would have use Homer instead :-) As in Simpson...

It's just street art by numbers.

Step 1: Start with symbol of power structure (military, police, large corporation, political)
Step 2: Corrupt it with a symbol of resistance/counterculture (graffiti, molotov cocktail, skateboard, gasmask)
Step 3: Render it in "street" style (stencils, tags, dripping paint).
Step 4: Profit!

This piece doesn't even make sense. Is the Disney Corporation an agent of passive resistance?


I get that ideas are borrowed within art movements, but good artists take existing ideas and bring them to the next level. This is just lazy an unimaginative. I like to think we should use our art collecting dollars to encourage thoughtful and creative work. Buying work like this just encourages more boring copycats.

If you can't afford a Banksy and like that aesthetic, I suppose this is an OK quasi-knockoff. I have no idea why you'd pay more than $10 for it though.

Maybe you're right. Maybe this is great art. Perhaps you should hold onto this piece for inclusion in an upcoming MoMA Eyesaw retrospective. Or you can flip it for $50 profit. Up to you.

Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life. That's the litmus test for me. Sometimes it's intellectual, sometimes it's profoundly beautiful, sometimes it gives me a chuckle.

You raise some valid points... However, even the Banks has been known to "derive" his works from other artists without adding much to the original work (But it's Banksy!!)... For example: "Girl with a pierced eardrum." Art does not have to have meaning... Eyesaw's derivative LIITA is pleasing to, at the very least, my eyes. (No, I do not own any of his works)

There's nothing wrong with derivation per se. Banksy takes a 17th century work and relates it to the modern world in a sly, cheeky way. The goal of his work is wholly different than that of Vermeer's. The image is loaded, and therefore useful as a building block in developing ideas about the modern world. That's the goal of most Pop Art.

Eyesaw's work is just a rip-off, swapping one image out for another. Essentially capitalizing on the brand that Banksy built. As an image, it's fine, even pleasing. It's just not good art. It's something you slap on your dorm-room wall and throw in the trash after you develop taste.

If you enjoy it as a nice little piece of knock-off graphic art, there's nothing wrong with that. As I stated before, it's a pleasant enough image, even if it doesn't make any sense.

Thanks for clarifying that. Can you come to my home and office and trash a bunch of "art" for me? I can't tell the difference! I'm tired of buying what I like and enjoying it. You should also become a moderator so you can approve these for sale threads. Stuff like this - we can just force the OP to burn in the rear yard instead!

I would agree.  I find intelligence in Banksy's work.

If I give Eyesaw points for anything it's recycling a tired image of his that was going nowhere and somehow selling a bunch.  Looks like a piece for "edgy" parents to put up in their kids' room.
