BANKSY People Who Enjoy Waving Flags, by Deleted on Nov 3, 2014 13:36:35 GMT 1, It's bizarre how this has turend into a political thread. I figured Banksy meant that people blindly wave flags at every opportunity without realising or seing what they are really supporting. Sort of being patriotic to a country that has well and truly f**ked them. Flags have political connotations, that's why it's become political.
I believe your right about Banksy.
With regard to the EDL though, there is a difference between being blind, and being brain dead.
Banksy, also clearly understands the use of irony, and has a sense of humor.
I think we're all generally agreed that this country was built on immigration, vikings, celts, romans etc, and are all aware that for many, immigration is, and will probably remain an issue, immigrants included!
Personally, I feel that there is a time for using your flag rather fists, to make a stand, become more visible, and say hey - who are you talking about exactly -we're here -here we are.
There is also a time to walk away.

BANKSY People Who Enjoy Waving Flags, by Deleted on Nov 3, 2014 13:38:44 GMT 1, Lots of street artists use flags in their art and wave flags artistically.
Brainwash with his NY mural painted a big American flag.
Banksy is provocative without trying to offend the wrong people in order to grab the publicity and market himself thats all.

BANKSY People Who Enjoy Waving Flags, by Snakes on Nov 4, 2014 23:25:38 GMT 1, It's great piece imo. I am always suprised when I see flags on houses, in classrooms, etc in America. It just seems a little over the top to me. And I really do say that with respect to my American friends on here. Why would it seem over the top? It's a National whose nationals are proud to be a part of. Why would they not want to show how grateful they are for what for many has become a better way of life?

It's a subjective point if view that I was expressing. I would feel uncomfortable if my kids went to school where there were flags in the classrooms. I would never fly a flag outside my house, or in it for that matter. For me, and this is a purely personal point if view, it would seem overly nationalistic. I feel lucky to have been born in Britain. But I don't want to fly any flags about it. Now, I accept that others will have a different point of view, as is their prerogative. They are free to fly their flags just as I am free not to. I also accept that there are cultural differences between Britain and other countries that might make people feel more inclined to fly lots of flags. It's just not for me.

BANKSY People Who Enjoy Waving Flags, by johnnyh on Nov 5, 2014 12:10:36 GMT 1, Suppose it begs the question what is nationalism
eg schools wear uniforms which identifies the school, often the religion and even the social standing so not sure a flag saying its in England makes much difference either way.
likewise in England particularly males support a football or Rugby team which tends to be our home town team football especially has a mass migration each week of people wearing scarfs and colours etc.
similarly in demonstrations etc which are not infrequent people fly flags and banners to show what they believe or which group Union etc they belong to.
so maybe going back to Cai point there is May be a bit more flag waving that we think although maybe not the George's cross which is still tarnished by the NF etc

BANKSY People Who Enjoy Waving Flags, by Deleted on Nov 5, 2014 12:17:25 GMT 1, Nothing wrong with anyone being proud of their country of origin and their culture.
The USSR abolished flag waving unless it was the hammer and sickle and the EU is doing the same thing by promoting socialist propaganda which makes people feel guilty of their indigenous culture and identity.

Until Britain is truly a United Kingdom I will not even be having a Union Jack beach towel.

Would Coach feel the same way if there was a picture of the queen in the classroom?
