Martin Whatson En Pointe Print Release, by Rouen Cathedral on Nov 10, 2014 22:48:56 GMT 1, This has gone much further than it really needed to.... The whole we hate MW and his repetitive tagging has turned into a hate mob saying this is shocking blah blah blah. This isn't a hangable offence in the UK... If he's out with copyright laws I'm sure there will be consequences, but to me,this is just people jumping on the bandwagon and wanting to shot first and ask questions later! GP has already posted on the thread, and it am sure he will again after the situation has been resolved? Would the original picture sell out if it was on GP site? I think not... Did the MW version sell out? He'll yeah and it's a nice image, he's added his part! If Banksy released this with a gangsta rat in the corner playing the ballet tunes, would people be email Mr Young?? I think not.. My opinion.. Now I'm off to find a thread about a release I don't like and make sure everyone knows about it! Then I'm going to head down Tesco's and shout at everyone who buys baked beans that haven't got the Heinz logo on them!
Do you actually think it's just about the image and that's why it sells?

Martin Whatson En Pointe Print Release, by curiousgeorge on Nov 11, 2014 0:55:01 GMT 1, A lot of posters in the thread would do well to research this history of MW before jumping in. His flickr page used to read like a A-Z of street artists. The week an established artist would have a sell out release MW would make a very similar version and ride the wave.
The Parla period being particularly embarrassing, bearing in mind it was such a massive jump from stencil work to squiggles it could be NOTHING else but direct copies.I remembering him defending his prices years ago (when they were on par with banksy prints at source) saying if Banksy charges it then so can I.Banksy paid his dues!!
Just a bitter old graff head hater…

Martin Whatson En Pointe Print Release, by Deleted on Nov 11, 2014 1:02:41 GMT 1, Whoa can't believe I missed this thread. Just had a bunch of fun reading it over dinner (homemade veggie burger with macaroni salad, in case you're interested)
It's been a while since I took some copyright law classes in college, but here's a couple of quick thoughts...
Copyright law provides exemption for works considered satire. Could it be argued MW is satirizing the original image?
Copyright is used to protect intellectual property. Maybe you're exempt if you kill enough brain cells spray painting without a mask and can claim you have no intellect?
People seem to be more vocal about their opinions of MW, pro or anti, more so than any other artist at the moment. Why is that? I've never seen a thread on copyright in street art get as many comments as this one, even though this sort of thing happens all the time

Sounds tasty.

Martin Whatson En Pointe Print Release, by Unica on Nov 11, 2014 1:34:26 GMT 1, Not the first artist to use someone else's image, if we are going to vilify MW, then shouldn't we take Banksy, Warhol, MBW and Fairey to task. Agreed its all a bit lazy but these guys are artists and I thought what we liked about this scene is the lack of regulation, I find it all a little rich for everyone to be getting so worked up by some plagiarism. Its not as if Banksy asks for permission before he takes an image and then vandalizes someones wall, and before you ask for an example. Lets just say "mobile lovers" difference is no one begrudges Banksy making a living but lets send the posse after MW.

Concurred - it's all a bit lazy but these guys are artists; (thieves?) I thought what we liked about this scene is the lack of regulation; I find it all a little rich disingenuous for everyone some of you to be getting so worked up by some plagiarism. Cheers mate! I just plagiarized most of what you wrote... Surely, there is nothing wrong with it... Innit?

Martin Whatson En Pointe Print Release, by Dr Plip on Nov 11, 2014 1:46:14 GMT 1, Can any legal experts on here tell me whether this is 20% or 30% altered from the original?
I have a very good feeling about this.
For xmas, the chopper will be carrying Santa Claus. For Valentine's Day, it'll be carrying a dildo. And for various rereleases, a piñata.

If he's out with copyright laws I'm sure there will be consequences, but to me,this is just people jumping on the bandwagon and wanting to shot first and ask questions later! Then I'm going to head down Tesco's and shout at everyone who buys baked beans that haven't got the Heinz logo on them!
Interesting albeit flawed reasoning. If Robbie Williams covers a somewhat obscure song that goes on to be #1 in most countries and he wins a Brit Award does that make it ok for him to pretend it's his and that he wrote it, after all it was the bigger hit.
In my opinion anyone defending Whatson by way of Banksy doesn't get the very thing they are into.
And as to Fairey he got into trouble not for using the image but his b*lls-less attempt to cover up his usage...for lying essentially.
Peeps are down on Whatson because his work seems lazy and formulaic. His lazy theft adds to it.
