Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Deleted on Nov 17, 2013 10:10:32 GMT 1, Why should they Json?,an agreement to come forth and sell their works was not in the bill of sale, neither was it stipulated they should tell the whole world, there wasnt an agreement, they simply bought then buggered off. I have no doubt that they are now aware of what they purchased and maybe they have already taken advice re selling/keeping etc., there again maybe they just like the feeling of owning an original canvas by Banksy?. Love you. In retrospect agree with wiz

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Dr Plip on Nov 17, 2013 10:34:38 GMT 1, That's right Wiz, you do own one of those canvasses.
Why haven't you come forward for TV interviews yet? (television, not transvestite)
Are you an actor?
Is this all an elaborate hoax?
Have you applied for a Pest certificate yet?
Have you put it on the house contents insurance yet?
What is your exact address?
When are you going out next?
Dogs. Big or small?

Why should they ? Why would they ?
They are mature people that just wanted a few pieces for their walls nothing more nothing less.

Not too sure if even this slangy provocation can elicit a response from even here. What does the author expect ? the visit was not disrespectful it was a visit , a lot of art , a lot of fun... A bit of charity here and there.. And the occasional off target missive hey ho.
Shame the article lacks in depth or detail , can't expect too much at the end of the day.
..as Alex Harvey often said perhaps too often for his own ears... Next.

All I could think through the opening paragraph(s) was "18 days later and this is what you come up with?"

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by johnnyh on Nov 19, 2013 21:11:38 GMT 1, I did read it and had to have a little chuckle. It quite funny how embarrassed they are by Banksy nailing it in New York
An un commissioned residency.......how appalling that he did not get authorisation from the American Association of Graffiti Writers (AAGW).......there is also a so far unsubstantiated rumour currently being investigated by AAGW that a non unionised writer was also spotted with a spray can.
"The artist utilized locations not usually known for tourist traffic" ........an absolute outtrage. Couple of pieces in Times Square we could have lived with but the whole city. A f**kin residency that's what it was..an unauthorised one...not a single piece had an AAGW permit to make it official.
"New York’s graffiti writers—angered for their dedication to the city’s streets being overshadowed by the British invasion. As the uncommissioned works appeared,".......see there you have it in black and white none of that wild style s**t pure times new roman or whatever it is.....but one thing I do know it was uncomissioned. Yeh that's the truth!!
"lowbrow quotations in his pieces".......where as our AAGW members now only quote from the classics emphasis in all AAGW courses for union members now in punctuation and grammar.
"pieces completed reflected the attitude of an outsider who does not understand the surrounding context of his actions. In his wake, the New York street art and graffiti scene continues despite his absence"........yeh there you go a f**kin foreigner came here wrote on official union walls and although members threatened to strike in protest as the police did not arrest him. In order to prevent future un commissioned residences by non members of the AAGW like Banksy and that French t**t and his invaders. Members will wear official AAGW bright green jackets so that they can be easily identified as association/union members by the police.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by graffuturism on Nov 19, 2013 23:06:07 GMT 1, It is a bit over the top but I appreciate when someone takes the time to write a clear example of critique with reasoning vs just bash the thing like others have chosen to do. Some of her points were good, but it seemed like i stated a bit too harsh.
Yet Im still amazed how fast people move on after an event like this, I thought there would be more of a lasting BUZZ or articles providing more insight. It seems that we really do have a short attention span when it comes to art. Here today gone tomorrow.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by johnnyh on Nov 19, 2013 23:32:11 GMT 1, Think that's a lot to do with the US writer Graff as I have not seen one decently written article yet that I remember. (Not seen many though to be fair). Not just talking about positives but considering he hit the US and had done before it seems strange the complete lack of knowledge, of his history and what he is as it were. I am also amazed at how insular the community is there. Similarly it seems the journalists are scared to go against the grain as all the articles have been pretty much the same. Not seen any that have looked at the insular nature of the writers or how could one UK artist have such an affect in such a city and country. It's all a bit this is not fair, he's bad etc got a real jealous tinge to them. Where as in most countries great visiting artists are welcomed by the street community.

That's one way to look at it. Another possibility is that it was an exhaustive undertaking for any one artist and it could well be that it takes the wider public some time to digest. Regardless, in hindsight, criticism is always loudest on the front end.

It seems the US graffiti community keeps getting negative responses, or called haters but the lack of history doesnt lie on our end. Anyone that states that it was the US graffiti writers all against Banksy are wrong and havnt been listening or paying attention to this thread. There have always been fringe factions that attack but the bulk of artists and established writers didnt respond negatively. Its the hypersensitive banksy fans that keep blaming or talking down on the writers. The articles I have posted have been from Real publications, and art critics dissing banksy not the writer community, this article was from artslant and I dont think the author is a writer. Graffiti writers dont write articles for the most part so I doubt you will see a article written about a subject they might not want to spend the time writing about. Yet I am sure they have an opinion about it as most of us do, that opinion was mostly positive when i talked to people. So I am not sure where or how you got to the fact that the US writers of america somehow didnt give Banksy his props. It has also been written through this many pages of this thread examples of everything i mentioned.
What pisses me off more is the banky fans that assume everyone is against them instead of reading and listening to what is being said. Not everyone is going to like your artist, he is not god, and he can do wrong. Its ok that he makes a mistake or people miss the point, thats the fun of rooting for your guy. What fun would it be if everyone liked and accepted what he does. I enjoy reading what people have to say negative or positive, I dont take it as truth or some conspiracy to discredit, it is what it is. The real power as we have seen is in the work regardless of what an article says. So relax and exhale.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by johnnyh on Nov 20, 2013 6:31:01 GMT 1, Graff the comment on writers actually comes from articles like the one We were commenting on. In my. Last post above I am commenting on the journalists not the actual Graf wall writers. This thread is littered with them. Many of which you have posted. So my comments are taken from those....I do not know any!!! I have not seen one that I remember that's.......ha ha this is mad or great. All the articles in general have the same message to them. So they may be real articles by real journalists and well may be that's the problem.... Now I am not so insular that I think Banksy is god and all great but do find it weird that there is such a negative vibe from the journalistic community which surely reflects the Graff communty

So they may be real articles by real journalists and well may be that's the problem.... Now I am not so insular that I think Banksy is god and all great but do find it weird that there is such a negative vibe from the journalistic community which surely reflects the Graff communty I get it but I dont think it really does come from the Graff community, I think its just the stage and bar that is set for Banksy. Imagine everyone telling you, you have to see this guys work and how amazing it is. Its the expectation that kills the natural reaction at times maybe to his work. Sometimes journalists and critics pride themselves in being the one to point out that someone is great, hearing it from someone else maybe creates a lack of motivation to have a clear argument. This is all hypothetical but I wouldnt be surprised.
None of these articles really change my reaction it just gives me new perspectives that maybe I had missed or thoughts that I had that maybe were also stated. For instance the Bronx piece comment in the article mentioned made sense and looking at it from the writers perspective I can see how it could upset Bronx residents, and maybe would have fit in better at a more relevant neighborhood to the piece. Also I made mention of a similar resemblance to the Garden truck piece to a show at the Hole which the article mentions. Not saying my opinion means anything but seeing that someone else commented on it made me think I wasnt imagining things. All in all I like to see when the public media not only engages banksy in the papers, but graffiti and street art as well. I read daily as much as I can on all subjects related to these artforms and its not everyday the new york times is saying something about your artform.
Graff the comment on writers actually comes from articles like the one We were commenting on.

"Keszler said he acquired the pieces from the building and car owners, adding that he receives calls every day from New Yorkers asking him to buy the Banksy that appeared on their property. Many of the pieces have already been defaced by competing graffiti artists or people who just do not like graffiti, Keszler said, adding that he believes buying the art allows him to protect it from damage"
