Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by gravity1 on Sept 24, 2013 1:59:30 GMT 1, This piece is going to auction in LA on Dec 5th. Prime example of "better out than in" So the theme is Better outside on a wall than inside a fkin saleroom?. Shame that ^. True, it is a shame, but I wonder what any of us would do in the same situation. Decent sized piece on the backside of an easily accessed LA gas station wall in a pretty bad area. Good thing the owner knew enough to have it covered with a tarp until now or it'd have been defaced for sure. From what I have seen the only banksy pieces that have survived in their original location in LA are difficult to reach/get to or are encased. From a quick search seems over 7 in LA have been defaced and eventually removed.

That gas station is DEFINITELY not in a bad area, I've been to it numerous times. It's an Orthodox Jewish neighborhood, a lot of families, everyone is very nice and it is for sure not a lower class area. The other Banksy on that same gas station still remains and is under plexi glass. Here's an article about the owner and that particular piece that was removed:
artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/08/14/owner-who-plans-to-sell-a-banksy-mural-steps-forward/?_r=0
I believe there are only 3, maybe 4 left in LA not counting this new one that's allegedly in the city. Only one is in a bad-ish area and I don't even know if that one still exists or if it's been scrubbed or something. Here's a couple pictures I took of them.
- The one at the gas station, under glass. It's also directly at the opening of the car wash so it's protection from vandals since Banksy's disappear or get vadalized quickly, and from the wear and tear associated with that particular spot.
- The PARK(ing) one. It's downtown near the fashion district in an easily accessible parking lot, probably about 10-15 feet up. My favorite remaining one. I added a second picture with a car for size reference.
- Bulldog peeing one is surprisingly still around in Beverly Hills. Empty lot, it's been defaced a bit before but was salvaged and in good shape. Nothing protecting it, super easy to get to. Not in a bad area there's just nothing around it.
- I didn't check on the crayon foreclosure one, it's in kind of a bad area, just haven't been down that way yet. I THINK that's the final one that may be around unless I'm forgetting one, all the other ones I've read were either removed, scrubbed, etc.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by gravity1 on Sept 24, 2013 4:46:17 GMT 1, Thanks for the info and pics. I live a few blocks from the "Park(ing)" piece but being 15' or so and in a well lit 24hr lot has helped quite a bit I think.

yeah definitely. I mean it only takes but a couple seconds to deface something and although they're all in pretty high traffic areas, these remaining ones aren't in spots that you'd normally see vandalism and everything so I'm sure they'll be around for a while (hopefully). Someone would really have to go out of their way to ruin them.

I'll have to swing by it and check it out when I have some free time. I tried to go by there the other week but my GPS was leading me in circles for some reason and I was running late so I didn't get a chance to actually stop and see it. Good to hear someone got it under glass though, it's a cool piece. I'm sure the area + the glass + the dog + the fence is a good deterrent.

He wouldn't do that. He'd be encouraging it. Why wouldn't he just create new pieces.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Deleted on Sept 24, 2013 10:46:05 GMT 1, I see no difference in the 'talent' displayed by bambi and Brainwash at all. They're both as rubbish as each other. I can think of quite a few other attention seeking muppets that you could add to that very long list!
