* 400-page 12" x 12" hardback book with black glitter and pink screen printed cover artwork unique to this edition * Exclusive art print, signed by 3D, screen printed by Lazarides * 12-inch vinyl featuring previously unreleased track on A-side, with an etching on side B * Housed in a bespoke heavyweight cardboard box with cover artwork by 3D * Limited to 350 copies worldwide, each individually hand-signed and numbered
"When I was about ten years old, a kid called 3D was painting the streets hard. 3D quit painting and formed the band Massive Attack, which may have been a good thing for him but was a big loss for the city." Banksy (Swindle magazine, 2008)
The Vinyl Factory presents 3D and the art of Massive Attack by Robert del Naja aka 3D - the first book on the visual history of a band who have sold over 11 milliion records worldwide, compiled and designed by 3D using images from a personal archive and original artifacts scanned by the artist for the record.
Robertโs artwork has come to define the iconic style of his band and the book explores their visual history, presenting both familiar and previously unseen work, from his influential graffiti and stencil art in the Wild Bunch-era of the โ80s to Massive Attack cover designs and paste-ups and paintings. Also included is work made in collaboration with Nick Knight, Tom Hingston, Judy Blame and Michael Nash Associates, as well as unseen photographs documenting Del Najaโs ongoing collaboration with United Visual Artists. And his recent work with filmmaker Adam Curtis.
The 400-page book also features an in-depth interview with the artist, where he describes the development of the bandโs artwork and record sleeve designs, as well as offering insight into his processes, and inspirations.
Del Najaโs background as a graffiti artist has shaped his evolving aesthetic, as well as a strong ethos of โdo it yourselfโ creativity. His instincts as an artist were forged in an atmosphere of spontaneity and innovation - from making flyers to throwing warehouse parties - and this way of working informed the first record sleeves he created as 3D.
Inspired by magazine culture and comics, 3D drew on wide-ranging influences, from New Yorkโs hip-hop scene and Japanese graphics, Jean-Michel Basquiatโs cultural juxtapositions to Warholโs pop imagery, politics and punk.
"โI was always told that any artist that wanted to be taken seriously should never paint record sleevesโ Robert del Naja
The Vinyl Factory will publish 3D and the art of Massive Attack on 28 October 2013; the hardback book will be priced at ยฃ50.
The limited edition will be for sale exclusively from The Vinyl Factory online web shop; available to pre-order from today, 16 September 2013

3D & The Art Of Massive Attack Special Edition, by sohohoho on Sept 17, 2013 18:58:10 GMT 1, I presume this is the book cover exclusive to the box set but does anyone know which one is the actual signed screen print and which one is the cardboard box artwork?

3D & The Art Of Massive Attack Special Edition, by astrobboy on Sept 25, 2013 22:34:34 GMT 1, I asked what the print would look like and was sent a pic. Its a blue variation (as opposed to orange) of the sleeve that 3D did for the original Mo'Wax Headz compilation.
ie the middle section with the body and turntable needle.
I was told "The image/artwork attached will be screen printed on 12x12". We are trialing two possible options using paint, glitter and ink. It will look amazing and be personally finished by 3D."
It sounds cool, and great for us Mo'Wax fans, but it's only 12" x 12", the size of a record which is pretty small for a print to put on the wall. Also the art police (ie my girlfriend) is not a fan of it which makes the ยฃ350 price tag that much easier to reject now.

3D & The Art Of Massive Attack Special Edition, by letiss on Sept 26, 2013 14:34:36 GMT 1, Feel slightly better about not going for this, as the image would not be in my top 5 3d/MA images. The paste ups from the show will have to suffice.

I can't tell what the print looks like. Is it signed and numbered? The price doesn't seem that bad to me but it is odd that they are still available after several years...
