Rae vs Bast! Fiiiiiight!!, by yoyosh on Aug 6, 2013 4:34:38 GMT 1, Wow, anyone else seen Rae's Instagram post? I had no idea these two had "beef". Looks like we Americans have our own Banksy/Robbo on our hands. I'd link Rae's Instagram but not sure how (and I'm lazy).

Rae vs Bast! Fiiiiiight!!, by Street Art Fan on Aug 6, 2013 5:12:15 GMT 1, Wow, anyone else seen Rae's Instagram post? I had no idea these two had "beef". Looks like we Americans have our own Banksy/Robbo on our hands. I'd link Rae's Instagram but not sure how (and I'm lazy). Here's the link to Rae's Instagram feed...
And here's what he (or someone with access to his account) posted a few hours ago below a picture of a one of his street sculptures that appears to have been torn down...
"What do you do when a former childhood friend becomes so overwhelmed with jealousy that he makes it his life's work to go around painting over and pulling down your work from the streets for over 3 years? You finally call his chicken ass out. BAST is the kind of guy who will key your car rather than step to your face. He walks around NYC with a paint roller on a long pole going over work he's too chicken s**t to climb and get to. And not just mine. No less he doesn't leave his name so he can continue to hide behind his fake persona --But I know the REAL truth. Words to live by--- "Always remember others may hate you, but those who hate you don't win unless you hate them, and then you destroy yourself." - Nixon #streetart #graffiti #bast #b**ch"
A sad turn of events as I count both among my favorite artists.

Rae vs Bast! Fiiiiiight!!, by Deleted on Aug 6, 2013 8:30:30 GMT 1, Bloody hell it's a case of spray cans at dawn here!!
Sad when two respected artists fall out.
Umm, so I guess a collaboration is out of the question then?!!

B. If its true then they should grow up and stop acting so childish.

Rae vs Bast! Fiiiiiight!!, by stvro22 on Aug 6, 2013 10:15:15 GMT 1, Bast is Dain's brother and he's been going over his stuff for awhile too. I saw a comment Dain made on his Flickr awhile back on a piece Bast when over. . When I inquired I was told Bast didn't want anyone he knew doing street art. All three were graffiti guys together growing up so this go way back I guess.

Rae vs Bast! Fiiiiiight!!, by Deleted on Aug 6, 2013 11:40:25 GMT 1, I was told that BAST felt that Rae started to bite his style... and I guess there are similarities in their style/methods.
I don't really know what Rae's work was like prior to him opening the Brooklynite gallery and BAST's show there?
Rae has always seemed like a cool guy, but it could appear that Rae has taken a leaf outta BAST's book?
Perhaps another reason why you don't see too many BAST shows... he doesn't trust too many people/galleries now! Hmmmm

Rae vs Bast! Fiiiiiight!!, by Deleted on Aug 6, 2013 13:35:39 GMT 1, Dain is definitely Bast's brother. He has also been accused by Bast of copying his style. So much so that Bast cut him off. If they all grew up together it only makes sense there are going to be certain similarities in their work. I've heard Bast's MO is to paint over other artists work often and some are applauding the fact that RAE spoke up.

Interesting points. I always thought Rae's art started after he began brooklynite? Or atleast started seeing it on the forms such as this one. Whichever's the case, I'm not sure. I definitely see similarities in the two's styles especially with the found parts sculptures made from found objects around brooklyn. So if Rae's been influenced by Bast (who did a quite awesome show at brooklynite in 08), and Rae's also represented Dain (who's stuff looks like Bast), could Bast feel as though his work is getting MBW'd by style borrowers that want a piece of his market? I mean I always believe that great art is stolen art but Bast has a style no one can fully copy (not A.CE, Dain, etc) so I don't see why he's not on board or at least accepting of Rae's recent recognition in the street art community. Just draws more attention to their collective work?
Oh and I hope maybe Bast will release some prints again through his website as a result of this incident. Maybe it'll light some awesome fire under his collage building genius.

Rae vs Bast! Fiiiiiight!!, by Street Art Fan on Aug 6, 2013 14:11:26 GMT 1, Although it's dismaying to see this kind of thing happen, I suppose the truth is that this kind of behavior between artists is pretty common - not just in urban art but in other genres as well.
In The Lost Battle: Leonardo, Michaelangelo and the Artistic Duel That Defined the Renaissance, Jonathan Jones describes the rivalry that transpired when Leonardo and Michaelangelo were commissioned to paint dueling frescos in the same building.
In an interview on Amazon, he has this to say:
"Competition was set in the genes, so to speak, of western art by the great rivals of the Renaissance. At the birth of modernism a century ago, Picasso and Matisse constantly checked what the other was doing and tried to outdo it. Their relationship was quite similar to that of Leonardo and MichelangeloโPicasso and his friends threw darts at a painting by Matisse of his daughter that Matisse had given Picasso as a gift.
Artistic competition is very much alive today. To speak from my own patch, British art revolves around the Turner Prize that pitches artists like Damien Hirst and Anish Kapoor against one another. This controversial prize may not have spawned any new Leonardos but it has given British art a lot of ambition. I was a judge of the Turner Prize while I worked on The Lost Battles. I found it fascinating to compare the competitive spirit in different times and places."

Rae vs Bast! Fiiiiiight!!, by stvro22 on Aug 6, 2013 14:43:25 GMT 1, I prefer RAE's work. One work tends to looks dfifferent from the rest. If you put most of Bast's work side by side they all look the same. Same composition. Same idea.

Rae vs Bast! Fiiiiiight!!, by ilmambo on Aug 6, 2013 15:23:24 GMT 1, I don't understand why Bast is tagging/defacing/stealing other artists' works in Brooklyn since years but I definitely lost some respect for him if the whole reason is just because those works are "similar" to his. This is in my opinion way worse than Robbo tagging over Banksy, even more if you think that Bast used to work at JFK Airport as a baggage handler and now his works sell for thousands of dollars a piece, it's not like he's struggling to build up a name in the scene because of others ripping off his style. Also it has been proved before that many Bast works are very similar to Warhol/Basquiat/Bokov/etc so his works aren't completely original either.

When Basquiat gets here later its gonna fkin kick off i reckon,he thinks they ripped off his work!.

Hmmmm I think because Bast had a really bad experience with a NY gallery who blackmailed him into doing another show otherwise he wouldn't get paid from sales from his website...so I hear anyway. I could be wrong though. Regardless, If someone slighted me, I would create some "art" based off a google search of "Outsider Art", maybe give some away, spend an inordinate amount of time on some forums, and build up a story to convince people I'm a street artist. That'll get people on my side.

I think a lot of people think styles begin and end on this forum and within the street art world.
It says a lot about a person who seemingly is on top to take shots at artists who don't have his notoriety. Sadly this is not the first time Bast has been accused of stuff like this. Back when Ad Hoc Gallery in Brooklyn was in business I spoke to someone who said there had been numerous fall outs between Bast, Aiko and Faile over things he claimed were too much like his. Even going so far as sending nasty texts to Aiko.
Seems like a pattern here.
I don't understand why Bast is tagging/defacing/stealing other artists' works in Brooklyn since years but I definitely lost some respect for him if the whole reason is just because those works are "similar" to his. Couldn't have said it better myself ilmambo.
