It f*cks with the simplistic foundation of Rothko's already barren work, by updating it with a bit of graf tag humor.

I think it's really funny and I'd much more happily pay Borf-type money for this vs. Rothko-type money for that (in a world where I was blessed with such a choice).

For me it's one of those beautifully simple ideas that makes you wonder why nobody thought of it before!
... I think it's the same appeal with a lot of Banksy work. It seems silly and easily copied, but the thought behind it is so clever.

I have to completely disagree...I understand the execution and the idea but to me these are very kitschy. If I had an unlimited budget a large Rothko would be at the top of my list. They are true masterpieces that are awe inspiring in person. These are fun but the prices for OG's are just insane.

Good luck with the sale I do think the prints are a great deal for the price if you like these.

I'm pretty sure we're in agreement J.  I'm not talking about OGs.  Just the prints.  Yes it's very kitschy but I mean that's kind of a central theme to a lot of street art, no?  It's okay to be comedic sometimes, as opposed to sternly serious (political, et al) messaging via street art.

I wasn't describing Rothko in an offensive way, mind you. I know of, accept, and embrace the value of Rothko's work.  All I meant is that my art senses are more attuned to the street level Borf than the 'elevated' level of MR.

Mind you bro, we're talking about ~£200.  So I'm a slave to the constraints of my feasible reality, I guess.

i like these. its kind of a piss take on a canvas that sells for 1 billion dollars or something along those lines and says .. ha .well. yah.. lets tag that and freshen it up a bit. the top end of the art market is a crazy obscene place this brings it down to a level where most people live and work.

Obviously this is just my take on things and hence my liking.

I actually find it harder to explain Mark Rothko's abstract expressionism than to remark on Borf's manipulation of that theme. Rothko's work shows an artist using colour and brushstrokes to convey human emotion and feeling. His often sombre work allows the viewer to freely explore their own emotions. For me when I have stood in front of a Rothko I have been drawn into the horizontal aspect of his work, its orientation reminding me of landscapes in my life. The pure scale drawing you into the experience.

Borf's world of graffiti is heavily influenced by the landscape and the environment in which he lives. A freedom to express with no boundaries, very much reflecting the freedom that Rothko tries to encourage the viewer of his works to explore.

In a subtle twist Borf has created juxtaposition with Rothko's work by using his large horizontal blocks of colour to obscure the viewer and restrict the freedom of his work.  He is of course reflecting the fact that graffiti is often obscured in a similar way when local authorities blank out these works using large blocks of paint.

I also like that rather than just use mundane graffiti cover-up Borf uses a clever and thoughtful palette of colours adding to the original work by creating intrigue rather than destroying the viewing experience.
