Lazarides Rathbone is pleased to present a new solo exhibition by American artist John Tsombikos, formerly known as BORF. Entitled BORF Show, the exhibition marks a monumental turning point in the artist's career as he further develops and extends the cathartic project of his moniker, by which he popularly came to be known, to assume a new artistic identity.

For his inaugural exhibition under his birth name, Tsombikos continues to explore the work of his 20th century contemporary predecessors in an array of urban media types. Referencing masters of abstract expressionism, the artists pays tribute to Lucio Fontana, Christopher Wool, Clyfford Still, Mark Rothko, Brice Marden, Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell and Adolph Gottlieb. Themes of authority, control and power feature heavily in both the technique and content, commenting upon political and social frictions while presenting a progressive transition from graffiti into an unforgiving body of new work.

BORF Show showcases a new subtle and complex selection of works that reinvents abstract art, challenging the audience to look at what is traditionally the tool of a vandal in a different light.

It's a very very insightful interpretation of a Fontana. Borf's whole motivation is driven by youth vs adulthood. Graffiti vs very expensive adult modern art were the relevance to someone youngs experience is distant.

His take on AbEx is highly intelligent, look more closely at the Fontanas I didn't get it myself at first until a friend mentioned it. Conceptually the strongest pieces in the show.

Thanks mate. From the pdf that was my favorite piece, but they don't look that good when placed like this.

How about the other pieces what artist are they based on? We have Wool, Rothko, Fontana and?

The photo of the 'Christopher Wool' diptych isn't the best, so I wouldn't necessarily be put off by my dodgy photography but I wasn't bowled over by the show as a whole.  Clyfford Still and Brice Marden were the other two artists I picked out.
