Charming Baker LA show, by Deleted on Apr 7, 2013 14:09:29 GMT 1, Thinking I'm in for the plane. Struck by the first plane images of his I saw.
REALLY like if it had some sort of individual hand embellishment as do the animals at the same price...but a unique, signature image IMO.

Charming Baker LA show, by letiss on Apr 7, 2013 21:32:58 GMT 1, I went for the bird and now seeing the image from aldoxzx I'm happy I did. Good choice. I might get one of those when I've got the plane on the wall. It is nice to have the chance to spend some time choosing rather than having to make an instant decision.

If I had the money I'd buy both and sit them next to eachother.

That framing looks great, but I was thinking of a black mount/frame for mine I think it might pop more - I will post pics when it's done.

That's what I had thought - its the only likely element, but would he draw 125 ?

The picture Stephan posted answers it but to be certain, yes he does hand complete all of the edition.

Charming Baker LA show, by Amber Halo on Apr 8, 2013 19:27:17 GMT 1, I have to say I kind of agree with a lot of the remarks here. I went to the preview and I also went back for a second look when it was empty and whilst there is no denying the quality of his work is excellent, the prices on the originals are just crazy ($110k to $180k). I'm convinced nobody will ever see their money again should they decide to sell in the future. I was told MOMA, Getty and the Hammer Museum all brought work but I'll ask my contacts at these galleries to confirm this before believing what I was told (they were after all trying to sell me something). I considered buying one of the small sculptures as they were lovely but couldn't bring myself to spend $5k on what was technically an edition of 100 if you take the 4 colour ways into account and only sold 'about 5'. I not really saying they were massively overpriced (although I would of brought at half that price), I'm just saying there is not a big enough demand at that price level. Even Antony Micallef struggled to sell his Pure Idols sculptures when he had his huge sell out show in LA a few years back at the height of his success (they were overpriced though and lack of sales showed this, we all wanted one right?) One other observation I'd make, LA is not the right place for a big show like this, despite all the money here there simply are not enough people of 'that type' here to buy the work. I go to art openings all the time in LA and the prices are significantly lower than in the UK, very few people here buy art as an investment, they are looking for something 'to fit that place on my wall that is the colour red'. London is the centre for 'urban art' sales and shows, you can always sell more when you have the frenzy of buyers. That frenzy doesn't really happen here, LA is too laid back and buyers have a different agenda. And just so you know, I lived in London for 15 years before moving to LA and work within the art world so I have experience of both. I know this may all sound negative, it's not my intention to by like this I just wanted to offer my perspective on the subject. And for the record, I love his work, he put on an amazing show and the effort that went into it was magnificent, the whole crew from Jealous were charming, there was nothing to fault, please put more shows on in LA now I'm living here :-) But if you want to sell more stuff, do it in London, make the prices more realistic for an artist of his stature and ditch the rock star agent. PS: I have been a member here for many years, but a new laptop, new email address and lost login mean I've had to start over. Interesting input. I tend to agree with your London v. LA analysis.
I suppose a fair question back would be your opinion on an appropriate price for his originals at this show, knowing the size and quality of these pieces. I was impressed with this show and believe many works contained "classic" Charming elements, while also advancing his body of work... even if the show may have flown right over the heads of the LA crowd like an upside down plane!

What about the Brainwash show? I didn't go but it looked like a bit of a frenzy from the 'Exit..' movie. Brainwash nailed his PR - The Charming Baker LA show had virtually zero PR.

Charming Baker LA show, by ArtmanLA on Apr 9, 2013 17:44:26 GMT 1, I'll try and answer all the replies. Prices of the originals in LA, I would of put them at about half the price they were, it's not scientific it's just want my gut instinct is telling me, I think at that price more people would of taken the gamble on a relatively unknown artist (here in the USA) but whose quality speaks for itself.
Wow, Mr Brainwash, were do we start, I think Banksy summed it up, some people should not be allowed to make art. There are many artists who have ridden the Banksy wave and got a leg up in the art sales department, Mr Brainwash exploited that to the max and with it created a lot of hype. The show was not quite the frenzy it was portrayed to be but he did sell a lot of stuff. Some people here in LA even thought the work was by Banksy so good was his 'association' with him. He played it really well and made some bucks but I don't think it's representative of the market here, I still don't think LA creates a frenzy buying crowd like London does.
Oh and in answer the the last comment, yes Mr Brainwash and Charming Baker are like chalk and cheese, the crowd at each event was different, not totally, but enough to show a different type of buyer. Then again prices were totally different too.

When I walked into the show about 30 min before official opening 10 had been sold and 4 were on hold.

Plane and Birdiii now almost all gone and Winter is correct- they have taken them off to ensure they have a few left for orders at the Original Print Fair.
