POW Pictures on Walls, by BK83 on Dec 3, 2006 8:00:47 GMT 1, In the madness of it all, I think I am starting to get a bitter taste in my mouth about POW and LAz and so on -- it really does all seem to be part of one giant machine that they always said it wasn'.... I can still say that I would love to get over and take a look at the ghetto first hand, but alas, two things stand in my way. I am in NY and; I dont have any money anyway so I couldnt even get a print if I wanted to -- On second thought -- I think Im just happy with putting my own artwork up on my walls -- that way I dont have to worry about which new 'Print' I have or what it costs on eBay ....

POW Pictures on Walls, by gbh on Dec 3, 2006 9:05:33 GMT 1, In all honesty, I tend to agree with the current sentiment here. It's getting pretty ordinary. I do find myself buying more from other artists/galleries.
Customer service from POW is ordinary to say the least. I'm not saying I want VIP treatment or anything but I have an order worth several hundred pounds that was ordered two months back and still has not been received. I'm emailing and calling every second day (from Australia) and until this day have not even managed to get a single reply. I feel there do need to be some minimum standards in general day to day business.
They may well be good at marketing and print making but there are many other areas of a complete business that need to work well for it to be a success. I do not believe those areas are currently working well (or at all) at POW currently. Going by the feedback I have seen coming out of SG this year, they continue to not do themself any favours.
In reality though, it's tough shit for us. Would you prefer to buy off eBay at wildly overblown prices? Life goes on (but I do want my bloody prints! Where the hell are they POW!).

POW Pictures on Walls, by gm on Dec 3, 2006 9:39:39 GMT 1, Not the Astoria was it? :-)
No, It was one of those rare occasions these days where I wasn't being twice as old as everyone else in the audience (and on the stage) This time we did mostly see John Otway at the 100 club. Everyone needs to experience his totally unique brand of mad genius at least once in their lifetime ;D
Next week, however, I will be being thee sad old git again:

POW Pictures on Walls, by gm on Dec 3, 2006 9:41:33 GMT 1, Some of these prints are 5 years old, sometimes more. People who enjoy seeing different art, regardless of financial value, will always pick up something more valuable...having art you love hung on the wall. I think the time spent looking at some of these things, is better spent on other artists with huge talent and no hype...

POW Pictures on Walls, by reados on Dec 3, 2006 10:27:05 GMT 1, i agree with the fact are people missing the point. People moaning cause they cant get the same image in a different colour this year and are missing all the new guys that are on show , i have just been llooking at pics from show on here, there are some great new artist and some new ones (titty pincher? look real good) and by original pow artists such as fowler etc.
and any of my coments are made by sitting here in cornwall without actually getting to SG so take them as you will.

POW Pictures on Walls, by foundation on Dec 3, 2006 12:22:16 GMT 1, No, I think some of you are missing the point.... Santas Ghetto 1 - 2 and 3 years ago where great. and this years show has been one of there best... Hey man, they bombed Oxford Street with some of the most amazing art around... (Looks like most of you missed that and went staight to the racks of prints and are now crying like sad children that missed out on your mum and dad not giving you that buzz light year 5 years ago) All you people out there who think its about buying prints have got it so wrong!!!... Your the sad ones who have made it like this... when actually, your all living in the bubble... Ahhh, remember the days when you could pick up a canvas for £85, you still can, but most of you are more bothered about buying and selling prints than the art there actually selling... open your eyes, and smell the reallity of it all, check the cutting edge political commentry... and then decide if you really want another colour way of a 5 year old Elius image....
Top words and sentiments Goose, for whatever fool decided to start the anti POW thread, please remember its a free country and your sentiments are as welcome as anyone elses, but for goodness sakes, stop crying, bitching and moaning, if you dont like it, go somewhere else to invest, oooh sorry you really are long term fans, i forgot everyone here has been collecting since 1983 when banksy was in primary 3 and you noticed his tallent .... The strength of art on show at the ghetto is outstanding, it just seems a shame so many missed out on it because they were ensconsed at the prints counter, if the exhibit was somewhere else from the sales booth, i seriously doubt that there would be queues to get in. If you dont like it just walk away, POW were here long before us, they will be here long after our breif flirtation with the art world has fizzled out and we go back to collecting eggcups. There isn't a great conspiracy, no one is out to get anyone on a personal level, and as someone pointed out, it is you who has spoilt it, this talk of older collectors trying to protect the value of their collections is utter tosh, the bubble has bust, the games over, its time to go home.. in another couple of months the prices will settle back to what they were before the boom, most will move onto the next big thing, with brand new grannies and applauses sat in the back of some besuited sheeps cupboard, forgotten.

POW Pictures on Walls, by Curley on Dec 3, 2006 12:45:34 GMT 1, At the end of the day people no one is forcing you to buy from POW. If your not happy with the service or what it stands for go elsewhere. The are a million other artists and galleries out there. Its not Tesco's or Harrods its a mail order print company trying to put affordable art in the hands of the people. Who seem to be victums of their own success.

POW Pictures on Walls, by lesroy on Dec 3, 2006 13:14:18 GMT 1, [glow=blue,3,300]"I went to the Ghetto yesterday by Lesroy"[/glow]
[glow=red,3,300]Firstly I had a smashing time.[/glow]
Whilst I have been buying art for some time I have never had the chance to visit POW Towers. I have spoken to them many times on the phone and indeed sent them Chocolates on occasions when they have gone overboard and helped me out with prints when they didn't have to.
I was one of the guys that tried for 4 hours and still missed out on the Applause print... but that doesn't make me bitter? Of Course NOT! Lets not forget we are all trying to get something that is Limited Edition, and the important word there is LIMITED. I think alot on here have forgotten that and assume that they "Deserve" a Banksy print.
I got to the Ghetto yesterday.. there was an almighty queue, full of jostling art fans some young and some, suprisingly for me, very elderly. The atmosphere was electric! There most have been 100 people just looking at the queue and shop asking "Whats in there", loads of people with their camera's and phones taking pics of Tony Blair, it was ace, you felt part of something!
Bouncers were friendly and shared a joke or two.
And then inside... f**k! Where do I start... wondered round just staring for 10 mins, got my bearings and looked at all the canvasses etc and then all the presentation folders giving me the chance to see all the POW prints in the flesh for the first time. Went out the back, watched a funny video, playing a game of hula and had a Go on the £1 Banky lottery to win an Applause.
Next I met Dora. I have spoken to her loads on the phone but never met her. We had a laugh and a joke and immediately that broke the ice. Of course she was stressed, imagine being in a shop with 100's of people asking "Where are the Eelus, Banky & Micallef prints?" one after another. But when you use a little empathy and understand her position, she was an angel and couldn't have been more helpful!
I then ordered my Stanley Donwood "Happy Families", Tittifreaks "Telegraph" and was over the moon. Whilst I waited for my prints I nipped outside to get me a coffee and Dora a Tea. On my return I met Remy from Laz.inc... what a legend, a thoroughly top guy!
Turns out POW didn't bring the Donwood print to the Ghetto so alas I collected only one £60 print. Was I unhappy after having driven for two hours to get there to be told, no Eelus or Donwood? NO.. I had a wicked day!
As a little sweetener I managed to grab the last DFace "Hate" as Dora's Cousin told me they had one so actually I was over the moon!!
Now I can buy the Donwood from the POW site and be complete! [glow=blue,3,300] The moral of this little tale is:[/glow]
POW owe you nothing. Banky and all the other artists owe you nothing! POW is an orgainsation making art more attainable to the masses, I had never heard of Tittifreaks, Stanley Donwood, Insect, Lucy McGlaughlin and a million others before I found out about POW.
With regards to service. Well f**k the lot of you who think it's poor. Have a little try to put yourself in the boots of the team at POW and Santa's Ghetto, once you have a little empathy you will discover how great they actually are at what they do!
Just by being nice and not hassling the staff I didn't have to rush, I was let in twice by the bouncers, Dora's cousin "found" me a print so I didn't have a wasted journey, Dora was really sweet and helped me choosea print I had overlooked.
What a post...sorry but I can't bear the knoking of POW & Sg without just deserves.
FINALLY
[glow=red,2,300]I'd LIKE TO SAY THANKYOU TO EVERYONE AT SANTA's GHETTO [/glow]

POW Pictures on Walls, by Run Pig Run on Dec 3, 2006 13:53:55 GMT 1, I agree with you mate, I was in there for hours just looking, I was even staring at the roof at one point. It was the best art show/shop whatever I ever been to in my life, all i'm saying is that I would of like to of had the oppotunity to buy a print from the shop like others had. I souldn't be made to feel guilty about liking an artist and trying to buy a print that I would enjoy having on my wall, I thought thats what it was all about! PICTURES ON WALLS!! I couldn't care less now, i'll just buy from the fat lady off ebay.

POW Pictures on Walls, by gordy on Dec 3, 2006 15:06:44 GMT 1, People on the forum are rightly defensive of POW ;D ;D and nearly everyone on the forum will no doubt have purchased a print from them and been very happy with service etc.. ;D ;D
However, POW has now reached another level concerning how big a business it is. It is no longer a small concern. They put santas ghetto on oxford street. They have massive international artists on their book's. Banksy,Hewlett and Donwood to name a few, are known worldwide.
Did they expect one man and his dog to turn up this year?
On the whole I had a great experience at Santa's ghetto and it was well worth the trip from nottingham at 6am on saturday, ;D ;D ;D queing for 90 minutes, the doors not opening chatting to fellow art fans in the queue(if your reading this dave, hope you got the prints you were after)and getting some of the prints I wanted eventually in the chaos(I am not criticising the staff but maybe if they had tubed and numbered the prints beforehand it might have made things easier for themselves).Couldn't wait to get home on the train to pop open the tubes and look at the prints I'd bought. Tittifreaks wires is awesome ;D ;D ;D
It might be a good idea not to physically sell prints at the event? people could have a look around order what they like or what is available and then wait for them to be delivered. Then people will go just for some of the amazing art that is on display!!

POW Pictures on Walls, by corblimeylimey on Dec 3, 2006 16:35:15 GMT 1, Well said lesroy, I'm pretty new to all of this really, I've liked Banksy's stuff for years but didn't even realise you could buy it until this year (I know, I know, where have I been etc ) but when I visited Brighton in the summer and saw some prints for sale at Art Republic I just had to buy one. I was very unsure at the time about spending £500 on a print in a frame, and the more the sales guy spoke the more he was putting me off, he was going on and on about it going up in value and it could be worth double in a years time and that he's got one more out the back and he'll be selling that for £550, lots of pressure etc. When I came home I did the research (after all I didn't even know if I had been sold a dud) I joined this forum, found out about POW and realised that Art Republic were taking the piss, if only I had known about POW before (or even looked at ebay). Remember if it wasn't for them and their ideals it would all go straight to places like Art Republic and we'd all be worse off. But the best thing is the whole experience has introduced me to lots of new art and artists I would have never of realised existed and thanks to POW is actually affordable, and now (thanks to this forum and numusic) have been introduced to and bought Charles Krafft. Sure POW buggered up a bit recently with the LA prints and from the sounds of it should have been a little more organised at the ghetto, I guess a lots changed over the last year, but I do hope POW doesn't change much in the future.

POW Pictures on Walls, by slippy on Dec 3, 2006 20:46:20 GMT 1, The thing I love about Banksy is he always asks difficult questions. It is important to question things. Some of the points in oppostion to mine have been insightful and articulate (especially some of the rants!). Some got upset. Maybe they're only comfortable with unquestioning following?

POW Pictures on Walls, by lesroy on Dec 3, 2006 21:03:32 GMT 1, Rk> Yeah it was strange to me I suppose. I kind of expected all these street-art fans to be of the same kind of mold.
I watched a couple (approx 60 yrs old) flicking through the A0 art sleeves laughing their asses off to the "Mr Tourettes" prints... then they ended up buying them both, complete with the word cunt all over them!
Then a really old lady, 70ish was inquiring about the originals (forget the name) of the animals at the back-right of the Ghetto.
It was a right mix.. and indeed a mix that felt good!

You can't generalize.
You've got to remember that the people who were stuffing their brains full of acid in the 60s and creating/being into all the far out radical stuff are now in their 60s and 70s. Everyone gets old on the outside, but not everyone gets old in the head
Granny Power!

POW Pictures on Walls, by RBK on Dec 3, 2006 21:31:12 GMT 1, GM - I'm not knocking them. That is great in my book. Good that these artists can appeal to more than the average demographic of forum members (which I would guess is quite similar)

POW Pictures on Walls, by alvington89 on Dec 3, 2006 21:31:13 GMT 1, I went on Saturday. Walked up the steps from Totenham Court tube station and immediately at the top of the stairs joined the queue. I turned upat about 4.00 pm so maybe the real rush had subsided by then. I have to say that all the staff were really helpful and friendly. O.K. It's not run like Tesco's but then the odd'antireatil approach all adds to the charm. My only observation was that most of the prints were in 2 floor standing lecturns and there was a big crowd of people around each, so no time to assess a pint for too long. Nice to see some new artists there though. Love titifreak's face. Hope he gets added to the POW stable soon! Too much to take in...Did come away with 5 prints though after a surprise late delivery!

POW Pictures on Walls, by mido on Dec 4, 2006 0:18:14 GMT 1, baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa ;D ;D
The thing I love about Banksy is he always asks difficult questions. It is important to question things. Some of the points in oppostion to mine have been insightful and articulate (especially some of the rants!). Some got upset. Maybe they're only comfortable with unquestioning following?

POW Pictures on Walls, by alvington89 on Dec 4, 2006 15:12:13 GMT 1, I got 2 Eelus 'Shat at's' in velvet (1 for my mate) 1 Eelus 'Chewbarber' in blue, 1 Insect 'Elvis' (unsigned cos all the signed ones had gone) and i Invader 'Alex' signed. Also managed to order Titifreaks 'Face' (last one apparently) last night. What a talented chap he is!! No complaints about SG from me. Thoroughly enjoyable plus POW are nice people :-)

POW Pictures on Walls, by slowmo on Dec 4, 2006 16:12:01 GMT 1, You could well be right about the bubble, but Banksy does seem to be diversifying to me, necessary if any of his prints are to hold any long term value.

POW Pictures on Walls, by rickyc on Dec 4, 2006 16:20:17 GMT 1, How much was the signed and unsigned Space Invader 'Alex'?
And does anyone know if there are any still available (I would guess not, but worth an ask)
Could also be tempted to swing by straight after work if there is one available.
Thanks

POW Pictures on Walls, by alvington89 on Dec 4, 2006 17:38:26 GMT 1, I think the signed Invader 'Alex' was £ 150.00 and unsigned £ 75.00 (Some more had just come in at about 7.30 pm on Saturday)
