It's my son's 13th birthday next week and we want to get him the above mentioned camera. Having only used compact digital camera's, this is new stuff for us and we're finding it difficult choosing one and the extra lenses etc. Two camera's so far have been reccomended the canon 1100d and the 600d. I'm sure there's a few on here that know their camera's...any help will be much apprieciated.

I jumped ship from Sony to Canon, the cost of additional high quality glass is very high with Canon.With Sony buying Minolta that opened up pretty much the back catalouge of Minolta glass, some of which is very good quality and very affordable prices
An introduction to DLSR with zero prospect of shelling out for expensive canon L glass then Sony is a great compromise with equal or greater quality/features (of course you can buy budget glass for a Canon but in my experiences 2nd hand Minolta can often be a great deal sharper than new budget glass)
If you think this will be the first of many (or a couple) cameras then I would stick with Nikon or Canon. Buy a cheap body and focus on the glass. I think you will never get the pick dead on there are so many ways to go. Depending on what he will be doing with it. You could buy one do everything lens that won't be great at anything or buy a more task specific lens that will be great at certain things. If he is serious about photography I would suggest getting a lens that he can build a collection around over time. It can also help creativity if you don't have crazy zoom capabilities. It forces you to think a bit about composition and such and move around. If it is mainly to take some snaps of the family and trips, likely be the only lens and serve a wide set of function then get a do all lens but you will pay in terms of quality.
Take a look at the Lumix Gseries gear, I had a GF1 (sort of compact mini dslr, couple of years old now) with a few different lenses, the micro four thirds stuff is fantastic mid-range starter kit. Plenty of lenses to learn the craft before moving onto the bigger Canons like the 60D I have now which is rather lovely imo

Good timing with this thread, I have been wanting to buy my first decent camera - a pentax kr white www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Cameras/Digital-SLR-Cameras/CRKR1855WE I like the white design and its great to hold, great price also.. But all my colleagues in work are saying "Don't do it you have goto get a Cannon (EOS), way better camera for same price etc..."
Thanks for the help people, photography sounds like a huge ballpark to get to know. I think he'll love it (and so will i when i pinch it off him!). By the sounds of it canon are the one to go with and the 600d, with the 50mm lens jaimes mentioned (is that a canon jaimes?) , which so I've been told will give him the focused object with blurred background shots that he wants to achieve initially (as long as good distance between object and background). So far as what he use the camera for, i think he wants to take portrait and landscapes (inc sport) and make videos.
If you see someone at a show fiddling with a camera and looking like he hasn't got a clue, you'll know who it is now!

I've just bought a Cannon 550D EOS with a 18-200mm Lens. Its the best thing I've ever spent money on that I can think of. I read plenty of reviews. One said it conctacted Cannon and asked why it would sell a mid range camera with such a simlar spec to the 7D EOS which costs much more. They simply replied its a compitative market out there. That was enough for me. Lens choice is yours but value for money at the moment is the 550D IMO.

The shop im going to get it from have the 550d marked up at £575 with standard kit lens, and the 600d at £650 also standard lens. The 600d has two upgrades that should really help my son over the 550, a swivel lcd screen for high and low shots/video and a mic that has volume control. I got a bit lost but i thought he said improved shutter speed but i could be wrong. For the extra £75 im going to go with that and buy the 50mm 1.8 canon lens (£95) if i can find one as they seem ultra popular and dont seem to stay on the shelf too long.

I second the GF1. I shoot all my images for my stencils and everything else with it. It's cheaper, lighter, takes great photos. You can also get an adapter for micro 4/3rds lens, and use bigger lens too. I can use the pancake lens for parties and daily life, and switch out in seconds to my short and long range zoom lens. All my photographer friends wish they had something like what I do, because it gives perfect balance of size and quality. I've had this for 2 years, and shot everything from show photos, to stencil reference, to sports/concerts with it. It's nice when you can tuck that inside your pocket (with the small lens) and go. Been a great asset when I travel overseas and don't want to have a camera body that is heavy. I think they are up to the GF2 or GF3 now, worth checking out, can usually get a camera + 2-3 lens for under 1000 easily. Only negative thing is that there is no viewfinder (have to use the screen) but you can buy the extra hardware one (it's a digital one) and it works great for like 20-30 bucks.

I asked the same thing on here earlier in the year. There's an old thread that I dug up at the time (appreciate it will be out of date by now) that I'll see if I can find and link.
The info from members on here was very useful. Saved going onto a "dslr forum" and trying to navigate through all that (which I did a wee bit of). Ended up purchasing a Nikon D3100 which I've gotta say, is fantastic. Was my first dslr camera too. There were supply issues at the time of my purchase due to the flooding in Thailand. Not sure if the backlog has been shifted yet. I bought from Grays of Westminster who were terrific and securely posted the camera to me and I received withing 2 days of payment. Great service and they know their bananas!
You won't go wrong with a 600d, there a good camera. Your son has a lucky Dad, I might unchain my kids on there birthdays if there lucky .
obviously I haven't got my kids chained up. So please no calling social services .
My son has a dad who needs a camera and this is my way of getting round the mrs nagging..'oi your not buying a fecking camera as well as prints..oh the joys of having teenage kids is paying off...for now!

think the 600d should be sufficient to begin with? Should be good to have a bit of cash for another lens. Great starting point, still working with my Nikon D90, performing well over two years later and around 20,000 pics.
I have a cannon, nothing amazing and its getting on (CANNON REBEL XT), but it was a great buy and it still takes fantastic pictures. I have a few friends too that are pro photographers and they all seem to prefer Cannon over Nikon, me I couldn't tell the difference but they obviously could. Which ever you choose he is a lucky lad.

...Fin, if he's going to be dabbling with the video side of things, definitely worth springing for the 600D, the LCD screen makes a huge difference in the way you can hold/manoeuvre the camera.
We use 5D/7D's for promo shoots all the time at work, I've seen video from the 550/600D, and with a decent lens, quality-wise they are comparable
Thanks to everyone that helped us out, i didn't want to go on the talk photography forum and end up with a million different options. We went for the 600d with 16gb 95mbs card, standard kit 18-55 lens (or glass for the purists!) uv filter and bag. I think thats enough to get him going, he can then save and build on his glass.
