it kinda misses the point as the bankers are doing well but everyone else is struggling or is that a banker asking for a bail-out

call me cynical (cynical, there you are i've done it for you) but i can't take any artist seriously who waits, poised and ready for a suitable newsworthy event to take place onto which they can piggy back and offload their insincere artwork. (eg mysterious al winehouse fiasco) Banksy no doubt lives the life of a banker, there is no sincerity in anything he's doing like this (perhaps why he hasn't got time to make a good job of it, or delegate succesfully, albeit in a rush, as this clearly was (pr targets for the month etc). Hypocrit. This is self promotion disguised as caring. By laying these objectives out so clearly you are subscribing to a capatalist lifestyle yourself.
Not calling you cynical just daft. Most people do subscribe to a capitalist life style. In fact most of the world do now including most the technically communist countries.
Now I think the Banksy thing and I still doubt it's him is crap. Of course he makes a load of money and in most cases that does change things that's life. That does not mean he is not sincere nor does it mean he does not care etc. But and it is a big but!!!!

It's cool that people have added their own messages to the piece - it's always nice when art has a message and is directly interactive - particularly at a demonstration such as this one.

alex - constructive cynicism can be a healthy thing - it's always good to keep questioning motives and our environments... can help keep things in balance and moving -can also sometimes digress it...
the voices of creative artists are important in society (art is their special gift to share - be it illustrative, music etc.)- it can help unify and communicate what the collective people may be thinking, educate and/or expand/calm minds- (i'm no artist nor student of art, so others may articulate the sentiment better?)... in this case i think the choice of "monopoly w/ the banker begging" was quite brilliant as a pulic art communication about a significant event which took place in our global financial system (just my interp - don't know what the artist was actually thinking - but i did grow up playing monopoly regularly, so i can see an analogy)... the artist hit the nail on the head, imo... unfortunately, the business of art seems to confuse or silo the thinking of many (including cynicists) in this scene (e.g. buying/selling, flipping and print volume etc.........) - despite this, proper art in society is no less important - good of this artist to do this... and if it was banksy- not surprising - he has remained one of the purest when it comes to political public art gifts to society, imho...
(actually hung out with a bunch of so called "bankers" this weekend who have no insight into this scene or banksy and showed them an online pic of the piece - it caused loud laughter and an approx 3hr conversation/debate/insult session - it turned drunken, lol... those are the pieces of public art i enjoy the most... come to think of it, the name of the artist who did it never even came into the conversation... i'll have to sort that out and ensure they know it was banksy (if it was) - cuz those bankers are minted - and that could help my banksy print go up in value later, if they start buying, lol... )
separately, capitalism is not at all a bad thing (not even for artists) - gotta earn to sustain (e.g. food, shelter - and luxuries [there i said it!])... seeking opportunity is not a bad thing either - as long as you're not trying to evily hurt some one... that's the conundrum with this whole thing - there is absolutely nothing wrong with trying to do your best and being rewarded for success (that's how progress in society is made?)...
