I heard a while back that a couple of years some guy ripped this out a kebab/newspaper stand by Tottenham court road. Sold to a dealer for 15k who then sold it on at auction in Germany for 200k. Madness!

I remember that, but my recollection (often flawed) was that the guy paid the vendor a lot less than 15k for it.

im sure it was more like 2 grand and the guy would replace his trailer for the back panel.
The owner only found out after he went into the bank that was opposite his pitch and his bank manager told him what it was worth. DOH

As far as i'm aware they guy that organised to have it removed realised it might be worth a few quid but was stuck with an original banksy and didn't know what to do with it... and flogged it for 15k and then the next owner made a killing on it
I think thats how the story goes

Thats the problem though TL, once these works make their way into the big wide world with some kind of pissarsed provenance like Vermin then joe average collector / dealer will just reckon it has real prov, not everyone knows about PC and will trust these pissarsed dealers, also now it will have a television programme to plonk on its COA!. Agree. Also it's kind of a risk/reward thing. If you're a dealer with a stash of cash or a line of credit (less likely today I admit) you do the math on the risk/reward and buy appropriately. If something is 'possibly' a Banksy or a Warhol or a Lichenstein or whatever, it's worth the risk to stump up for it as the pot of gold at the end of that particular rainbow can be eye watering. If not, you sell it on at a loss or break even to some other hopeful... Yours, happily mixing metaphors, HB

That Hawkins is a little hotty! She bought the Fracis Bacon canvas that had the centre cut out paying £48k, if I recall correctly.
It will be interesting to see how much the dealers are prepared to pay for the Croydon piece. A piece of street art by Banksy with no Pest Control should command a whopping zero. However, you never know. At the end of the program in the preview for next week they showed one of the dealers offering £250k but they didn't show whether he was bidding on the Banksy.

The thing I dont honestly get with 'buyers' or collectors of street pieces is this...
If I had 200 k to spend like these people I would fire an email straight to pest control and commission a canvas...much better use of money if you ask me.
who wants a brick wall placed in their living room?

banksy should put somin out saying that any street pieces are valueless cos he put em on the street for a reason for all to see not just for the greedy f**ks who want to make a fortune tarring them out and selling them on

Dunno, you might be right, though they don't authenticate his street work which would imply they don't want it ripped off walls and flogged, wouldnt it?

Who would buy it off them? the dealers I mean? Nobody with any sense so if they do buy it its worth f**k all without PC cert and they would never do it. Its a vermin cert which means nothing. So if one does offer big money it will be interesting who the buyer is... banksy crew? This could be a stunt like the recent billboard and the New york piece... painted to steal... great pr stunt, maybe? Its all PR people... i disagree that it's worth nowt. i mean if you consider the piece to be authentic, which i don't think anyone is doubting, then you're a hypocrit if you only say it has value with the pest control authentication. Below the radar of pest control and the auction houses etc this should still hold value for many.
